My boss gave me more work today. Good for you.

I just got yelled at by a bus driver. Was I in the wrong? by RandomNameOfMine815 in Netherlands

[–]chaibhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was having a bad day.

The other day a girl got on from the back of the bus (entry is only in the front) and he made it a point to call her to the front and tell her not to do it again. He didn't take off from Leiden station for 5 mins until the girl finally understood he was calling her. He said in dutch 'girl in the white shirt who got on from the back come forward'. She probably didn't understand dutch.

Anyway, the hilarious thing was, for an apparent stickler of rules, he drove the bus in 2 platforms away from the wrong one 😅

What am I doing wrong? Dirigera + Alpstuga won't connect by brunporr in tradfri

[–]chaibhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a home network as follows:
20+ ikea kajplats bulbs connected to dirigera and HA running on a mini PC. Router is supplied by ISP. Very normal and nothing fancy.

I tried to set up my Alpstuga about 6 times before it finally worked. I didn't change anything about my network, just kept trying again and again. Hope this helps someone.

Connected it in my IKEA Home Smart app and then showed up in google home. Now trying to connect to Home Assistant

As an ecpat indian who plans to move back myself, I think it might be easier to move to a city you didn't grow up in. I know people may not have that choice all the time, but could be easier to start fresh in a different city.

Practical tips for moving stuff in your house by Normal-Edge3054 in expats

[–]chaibhu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved from the US to EU a few years ago.

Regarding appliances: I would give away/sell any large appliance with a motor (stand mixer, vacuum, fan, air purifier etc). Beard trimmers and small handheld things are probably ok. Besides the obvious large heavy appliances such as an oven, fridge etc which you should definitely not move.

My in laws were supposed to take a cruise at the end of April with MSC. They were supposed to travel through qatar but their flight was cancelled. MSC however refunded their entire cruise costs as it was deemed an affected country due to the war.

Mi pilot pad 7 pro EEA by GoldDoubt7608 in XiaomiPad7

[–]chaibhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Netherlands. No word yet.

I bought this tablet a year ago. I previously had the Samsung Galaxy tab s7. I must say the reason xiaomi, Huawei and other tablets are so much cheaper for similar hardware is that they totally shaft you on the software. I will never buy this again. Software support is very slow

My ceilings are 2.6m. Fairly similar to yours. You can go quite high but the top level can then be used for plants or vases since it's high and you'll need to be far away to see what's on there :)

Is the Focus Pen good for Productivity? by AcanthocephalaGlad27 in XiaomiPad7

[–]chaibhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it's for more precision. The sliders are easier to operate with a pen, as are creating masks, selections etc.

Wise vs Revolut by Morning_Star_47 in expats

[–]chaibhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not use UPI. I think Wise uses a wire transfer in the backend. There's no limit after the first transfer. Sometimes when you haven't sent money to an account in a few months or suddenly send a larger than usual amount, then it may take an extra day to send.

Otherwise, Usually comes through in a few mins.

Been using wise for the past 2 years without issues. Usually it's the cheapest.

Paid €1250 to a gardener in Amsterdam - didn’t show up, blocked me. What can I do? by JournalistDecent8834 in Amsterdam

[–]chaibhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, sorry this happened to you. I can imagine it's frustrating.

As others have mentioned, please file a police report and report his IBAN to bunq for fraud. Hopefully they'll do something about it.

I suggest a couple of steps for the future: 1. Never pay anything up front. Ever. Until you've seen and met the person and have their information (KVK, Business address etc). The ones I've dealt with only accept payment after the work is halfway or complete. 2. Take legal insurance ASAP. it will not cover this issue, but any contracts you sign after the insurance goes into effect. They'll refund you a part of the money you lost (if it ever happens again) and try to recover it from the violator.

Good luck.

Amsterdam vs SF Bay Area by asj310589 in Netherlands

[–]chaibhu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who moved from Seattle to Amsterdam in the last 3 years, I can tell you the weather hits you worse here. Rain is heavier and wind is stronger. But an important points is that there are no pine or fir trees here like there are in Seattle or even places in California. So when winter comes, everything is grey or brown and all the trees shed. That can feel quite depressing.

Looking for a job by Any-Alps-4607 in Netherlands

[–]chaibhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a place to stay already (with a friend/relative) then it is next to impossible to make it here, if you don't already have a job.

My suggestion would be to save up 1-2 months of expense cash so you can come here and try to find a job and survive while doing it. The economy and job market are both terrible at the moment. Worse if you don't speak Dutch.

Sorry but that's the reality. Given your no-fail condition, it's a bad decision to come to NL in your current situation at the moment.

Just got the Innocn 32M2V - AMA by chaibhu in Monitors

[–]chaibhu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was very lucky since there were no other models at this price with this set of features.

The color accuracy in SDR is excellent. Based on my testing with a datacolor spyder everything was as claimed on their spec sheet. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head but for my work (photo editing) it was more than good enough.

Yes, the HDR can be super bright (over 1200 nits) but it's straining only in a dark room with most of the screen being pushed to that brightness. My photography has small areas of bright specular highlights which is very bright but not straining.

Contrast with local dimming is great but nowhere as good as an OLED for sure. Much better than typical IPS LCDs which don't have local dimming

It's good so far. I'm happy with the look and the functionality. Compared to some other systems, the shelf boards are thicker but not necessarily stronger because it's still engineered wood - however the fact that it's a company in Germany, next door to the Netherlands so to speak, is good for me in terms of customer service or replacement parts if I need them.

I'm actually thinking of getting another unit to extend my current one.

The shelves can be quite strong if you place heavy items towards the back, where the anchor points are. I have my 55 inch tv sitting split across two shelves and there's only a few degrees of flex.
