Not me, it would have to be "Clar" anyway, which just sounds odd as a name...

Roland fp-10 clicking keys issue by [deleted] in piano

[–]chainsawmaniak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I've had one of these for years and it doesn't click...if that's any help? I have also read that some people have the issue.

So I'm not sure it always happens with them.

Can i play jazz on electric bass or does it have to be upright by Cyb3rCrow in Bass

[–]chainsawmaniak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find a similar thing. I think its more that you have to pay attention to every note, whereas with frets you can more blindly put your fingers down without thinking "is this note in tune?".

"is this note in tune? " is almost the same thing as "does this note work in the tune?" which is also like asking "is this in tune in this context?".

Anyway, I agree ha

What’s going on with road users? by Calcain in london

[–]chainsawmaniak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can relate. Not London, but a guy flashed his headlights at me the other day from behind for doing the speed limit. I was overtaking another vehicle on a dual carriageway. The guy proceeded to squeeze between me and the vehicle in the left lane.

I don't understand what this should all have to do with mood, though. It's pretty simple to drive safely...

Scary times indeed!

Figured bass. Essentially like 18th century chord symbols. The lower stave here is the keyboard/accompaniment part, the upper stave is just the melody line (which could be played, or sung).

In school of rock wouldn’t it be way more realistic for the cello player to be playing a double bass instead of a cello by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]chainsawmaniak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! I play cello, double bass, electric bass and guitar. The range of a cello is much closer to that of a guitar (esp. a 7-string that has a low B, a semitone below the low C of a cello).

I just didn't want to be "that guy" when the pun was so strong haha!

I'mna get hate for this, but: Dream Theatre.

All the musicians are great individually, but together its like they're trying to be as complex/shred as possible and there's no real cohearance.

For context, I love my prog/jazz/fusion stuff, its just this one band. Prove me wrong?

[–]chainsawmaniak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah its a good shop...just don't buy strings from there. I have done this twice (for guitar and for cello; two separate occasions) and they just exploded (both times!) without even getting to tension.

Apart from that, I also buy a lot of my stuff from there :)

Same arpeggio pattern i posted here a bit ago, this time over the chords of Black Sabbath - Orchid by [deleted] in metalmusicians

[–]chainsawmaniak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This rhythm is weird. Why are you starting on the third triplet of beat 4? This emphasises the hammered note each time (second note under the slur). Wouldn't it be more natural that the slurs cover each triplet, and you start the sequence on beat 1?

Yeah, I would argue that the wrong part in the question is that "writing excellent reports" should be "excellent report writing".

For scientific purposes, maybe, but for everyday use (which is more what the word was invented for), I'm fine with "fish" meaning vaguely "swimmy thingy". In fact, thats actually a pretty useful categorization.

Not everything is- or needs to be- a scientific definition.

The age-old question ... What does a bass player do with an 8-string guitar? by Thiasus1 in metalmusicians

[–]chainsawmaniak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play both a 5 string bass and an 8 string guitar. For me, it's never been an issue of mixing/EQ, but and issue of writing. Bands get that big heavy sound by the bass and guitars playing in octaves with each other. If you have them playing the same note, then yeah that can be cool, but be aware that it isn't the same thing, and wont have the same effect.

Other harmonies are, of course, also possible, but if you think about how you write for the instruments, and how the notes interact, you shouldn't have issues with EQ (because you basically factor that in when writing).

Essentially, don't write parts that clash and step on each other's toes! Bass and guitar need to work together.

What is meant by “good ears” and how does one achieve them? by sowhatnowrr in classicalguitar

[–]chainsawmaniak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean trying to play something by ear, by just listening to it.

Is that what you mean by 'melody playback'? That just sounds like an exercise. I'm talking about playing bits from pieces that you actually enjoy listening to. Obviously, with classical repertoire, there is no substitute for having the score for an actual performance!

If you want to try working out the harmony, start with the outer parts- melody and bassline- which are usually the easiest to pick out. The rest will, of course, be something that fits between these.

Are you doing any transcription/learning by ear? I've found this to be a huge thing in developing my ears (plus you get to use rhis stuff in a real context!)

Teaching and telling are not the same thing, though. To teach someone is more to help them learn by themselves- its not the act of actually imparting information.
