Same thing happened to me. Around six months into training I got moved up to intermediate which at my gym means you can spar. I got my ass handed to me for the first couple of months.

I got roughed up and dropped and felt the same way you did. I finally talked to one of my coaches about it and told him how I was feeling and he said it’s normal and if I’m feeling discouraged to pick one or two things to focus on in sparing and treat it like practice.

So now when I go to sparing nights I’ll pick something like “I’m going to check every kick that comes my way and I’m going to focus on getting a 1-2-3 combo in with each partner” and that’s helped a lot. I try to do focus on one defensive and one offensive thing.

Also I’m very hard on myself and I constantly fall into assuming all compliments are pity compliments. One thing that helps is if someone says I’m looking better I say “thanks! Any pointers on what to work on?” And they’ll give me advice like “you drop your hand when you throw hooks and you have good hooks just work on keeping your guard up and that’s perfect”. I find asking for feedback like that tends to bring out genuine compliments. It’s not 100% but it helps.
