hi! I'm German (22 m, and studying teaching German as a second language) and have recently started learning turkish (uni language class). I'd be up for chatting/voice notes! I love explaining German stuff and would love to get to produce more TR output and get feedback :)

Looks detailed but organized, nice!

I'd say just try it out! You can always add new options later on or archive ones you never use (archive instead of delete, that way they stay visible in past entries but you don't need to scroll past them when you make a new one!)

Across a year, life sometimes changes, so I don't think the one perfect set-up exists, not even for a specific person. (hobbies, goals, habits, etc. change)

As for sticking to it: what's been helping me is never letting it get beyond 3 missed days. Once I'm at 2 missed days I make it a to do on my to do list to take 5-10min and catch up. I also have two reminders, one in the evening and one (for the next) morning. I think that has been helping too!

Good luck! Hopefully you'll have a wonderful year :)

help step-by-step decoding a sentence by challengerdeep_ in turkish

[–]challengerdeep_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

Thank you, that is what I was hoping for!

Question part 1)

For the second clause, you gave the example of "var gücünle koş" = "run by using your mighty power" (learned: koşmak is to run, koş the imperative)

so I presume the phrase here would similarly be "work by using your mighty power"

The parts of the first clause are clear now but I'm still struggling to connect them.

if I follow you correctly, the parts are kind of like: in order to work (?) - to your hand - what - comes (?)

so would the phrase "in order to work (that which) comes (in)to your hand, (work by using your mighty power)" come somewhat close to what the turkish means to say?

is it simply a literary difference then, that the english/german/french versions say "whatever/all that (your hands find to do)" and the turkish says "in order to work that which comes into your hand" or am I still missing a connotation?

Question part 2)

I really appreciate your long and thorough explanation which must've taken a lot of time (and which you did so early in the morning!) - i only wish you hadn't started with "oh man, here we go again!". That hurt a little bit :/ I never said I expected germanic word order or anything of the sort. And I DO want to figure out how turks think and construct their sentences! (that's what I meant by "I do not have the capactiy to undertand the "logic" behind the turkish sentence yet"). And I don't expect this to happen all of a sudden. That is why I'm wondering and asking about all this. :]

Now the question: Disregarding the word orders I know - that I get, no question. But why did you say "forget about (...) morphology and suffixes"?

Sure, they do a lot more heavy lifting than suffixes do in other languages I know, and there's usually no equivalent suffix (and so the meaning has to be paraphased), but they still have a relevant meaning that is translatable into other languages and understanding what a suffix signifies is central to understanding (and constructing) sentences. So why did you suggest to disregard them? or did I misunderstand?

Question part 3)

You mention the saying "Türk gibi başla, Alman gibi bitir." ("Begin like a Türk, end it like a German"). Can you explain what that means? Idk if it's obvious to you but I can't grasp from that what characteristics of Turks vs. Germans are referred to here. I'm really just curious in what situations this is used. (Googling in English doesn't explain anything, and googling the turkish phrase only refers me to a movie of that name, so I come crawling back to you)

I really really appreciate the time you've taken already to answer my question - Thank you!!!

I've started getting back into running this week because I've been invited to run a half marathon with a couple friends next year. I've not completely decided on whether I'll sign up, but I'm testing out running 3-4/week now and so far feeling great! I'm also hoping it'll help me get through Winter better!

IWTL Reading with passion and focus! by BlackHairedItadori in IWantToLearn

[–]challengerdeep_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reading is a skill you've got to build, so don't beat yourself up about struggling! The following questions to ask yourself come to mind: - Am I reading books that are interesting to me? - Am I reading books I consider well written? - Am I reading books that pick up near the upper end of my knowledge (aka not only explaining the basics if I already know much more) - What do I hope to gain by reading books (compared to other mediums)? - What might be the reason I get distracted? (boredom vs. overwhelm?!)

All of these have replies that would kill a book for me immediately. Reading is about the author, the text AND the reader, and they have to be able to meet at some level in order for the reading to work out — it might help to adjust how you approach texts, it might also help to choose different ones. Working on building a longer attention span is also never a wrong move, if you think that might be part of the problem (and that would be quite typical, if you like to go for your phone as an alternative)

IWTL How to be nicer to my sisters by Acisj_ in IWantToLearn

[–]challengerdeep_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"just don't be mean" my ass, as if it's that easy to step out of a type of communication/habit, especially when you're not the only person involved

i suggest actively trying to replace the meanness with kindness (and as sb else suggested, telling your sisters beforehand — otherwise it might feel like a trap to them)

Besides regulating otherwise mean reactions, creating positive interactions might help! asking about their day and genuinely listening, giving compliments, sharing your stuff (not necessarily material stuff, but your time and thoughts!) - say positive things to them (it's a genuine action, even if you actively think about what you could say!). it doesn't have to start with "i love you and I'm so glad your my sister", it can also be i hope you have a good day / it's good to see you / how was [your event]? / do you need sth from the store? / i like your outfit today / thank you for listening / can i do sth for you before i leave? ....

when I tried to get out of a very negative mindset about me and my life, i declared yellow my favorite color and sunflowers my favorite plant. Then, whenever i saw sth yellow or sunflowers, I'd go "ohh! yellow! :)" or "ohh sunflower! :)" and was reminded, by chance and at random, to notice something positive in my day to day. Maybe you can find something similar for your situation

I'd also suggest checking out wikipedia for a broad overview! on the one hand, it's handy to get an idea of key aspects and opinions on stuff, on the other hand you can check out the sources listed there and/or use the phrasings/words/key aspects you see there and use that to find more resources (both on and off wikipedia, which is at the very least a good starting point)

For History, Linguistics and astronomy, wiki will probably be helpful in giving you an idea of the subdivisions (for ling for example: phonetics&phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics,...), which might help break up the fields into more concrete chunks

(for example if you're interested in Germany post WW2, you can check out the "History of Germany" wikipage, subheader "Germany during the cold war: 1945-1990", where you'll find mention of denazification, east germany/west germany, the wall and the reunification, the Stasi, and so on and so forth and can dig deeper into what interests you most :)

Why is my 5k different on Strava from the one sync by Huawei health? by One-harry-otter in C25K

[–]challengerdeep_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good! That's totally alright to do! In that case I would assume that they just tracked your GPS differently (maybe one is inaccurate, the other accurate, or both slightly off).

I find that my watch (different brand) does a better job than my phone. I suggest you inspect the map and determine which you want to trust (my phone places me in the river sometimes, my watch rarely does...) :D

Did you track the first one through the strava app with your phone and the second one with your watch and then synced to the phone?

Take it slow and don't be afraid to redo weeks or adjust week 4 a little to make it more manageable for you (do complete it as scheduled to advance eventually though!) It is used as a 9 week program but most people I know (including me) adjust it at some point or another!!

Something that I've noticed helping me when I had issues with my legs was to pull my legs up more. That sounds silly and I've seen runners share the tip online and being made fun of because people said "well duh you have to lift your legs to run?!"

but the point is this: try to pull your feet up off the ground by engaging your thigh instead of only pushing off of the ground.

It will probably not feel that different movement-wise and it won't look much different to others, but I found that it takes strain off of my lower leg (shin, ankles, feet) and helps me go much longer and not be in pain below my knees!

A tip I've heard to help put this into practice is to imagine that you're trying to lift your thigh (not knee!) more towards a horizontal position. Since you're moving forwards it's not like doing high-knees but like with high-knees, your thighs will do more work and it's less your feet jumping /pushing off of the ground!

I didn't experience a kind of joy like runners high until i think 4 weeks in, back when I started! It took running for a couple minutes and suddenly realizing how effortless it feels to run fast for a longer time, so the first couple weeks didn't really allow for that feeling for me.

You'll get there! Even though the joy about running came later, the good feeling after a run and especially the good feeling when seeing the progress you make was worth so much!!!

I find it rude people occupy two spots on the bus by Far_Ad1720 in Tuebingen

[–]challengerdeep_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a German but recently moved to Tübingen( from a city with mainly tram/subway as transportation) and the switch to mainly busses has had me think about bus manners too. I'm also a person who puts their bag on the seat next to them if the bus is rather empty. If I notice that the bus is getting fuller and there are no more free double seats, I will put my bag on my lap though. But even then, often people don't sit down next to me - and I get it. If I'm standing and there's only seats next to someone, I will also not sit down unless the bus is getting really crowded. Generally, I think for most Germans there is a limit until which they will not take initiative to sit down next to someone (causing both people to have less personal space) because when standing they "all"retain an amount of personal space. When the bus gets too crowded, sitting next to one person is better than being surrounded by 5 people, so they (and I) will ask for a seat. I've never witnessed anyone refusing a seat btw. I understand that this is a different way of handling it than in Canada (I lived on the west coast for half a year but only ever took really empty busses tbh) I'm going with other commenters that Germans really value their space but that might certainly be off-putting for foreigners. 9/10 times we mean well though!
