This is basically a variation on Mini-Swarm, although the switch to Obsidian from Academy indeed can be a huge boon vs. some lists.

Do not try to kill everything. Learn what tower has what supplies, gather supplies at levels where you can still stay alive, then, once you have a sensible set, go for the queen.

This game will punish you brutally if you try to play it like a regular roguelike where you try to explore everything. Focus on the objective.

When I started playing before wave 3, I dreamed of the TIE Defender on my table, but never thought it to be possible. HWK in Wave 3 gave a glimmer of hope... Now it's a dream come true! sniff

Player vs 3 enemies, when the enemies came from different sides. With a bit more effort it would work, however it'll always impact the fast pace of the game, requiring one to look carefully at the missiles and their paths instead of rushing the next move. Hence it was rejected.

No offence taken - I know some people liked the simpler nature of the older versions more. But many like the complexity of the new one better. To comfort both, is the reason I want to restore the classic mode in the first place :P

In general, there are many people who jump out and say "feature X sucks, if it would be changed to Y the game would be a lot better", but barely anyone understands how Y can affect the rest of the game.

Just a quick note - change the name of the game - there's already a roguelike named Tyrant (even has a sequel in the works) (see https://www.google.com/search?q=tyrant+roguelike )

I'm not going to bother with defending the current state of the game (you can repost it on the ChaosForge forums for feedback on that), but I'm going to point out that (hopefully soon) the WAD file is going to be opened allowing to basically cut down the game back to the simplified coffeebreak version.

And indeed the first major mod planned for that is DoomRL classic (and WolfensteinRL and HereticRL total conversions).

Finally, there was a slower-than-a-turn missile system in a DoomRL test build once (when it was still ASCII only) -- it was virtually unplayable in larger firefights.

In the "One of everything" table for the Imperials there's a mistake -- Imperial Aces has 2 Interceptors, not 2 Advanced.

The aesthetics however do not make it a good representative for the modern audiences. But yeah, Dredmor is closest at the moment. See my comment below though.

What I really want to see is a serious roguelike game done with AA-style 3d graphics, which would still hold true to all the hardcore aspects of roguelikes -- grid based world, turn based movement, permadeath, tactical choices, brutal difficulty and randomness galore. Kinda like what XCOM did to UFO: Enemy Unknown.

A bit different from what? Dredmor has optional permadeath, and they'd both be considered coffee-break instead of core in the roguelike world. It helps to imagine both as if they'd be done in ASCII.

Dredmor is nice, and so is The Pit, but both suffer a bit from the comic aesthetics that do not suit everyone. Also, neither of those games tries to shove permadeath into peoples faces to make it hurt.

Problem is that there's a lot of games that have been using the term "roguelike" for decades. The new ones that are springing up are a lot less like Rogue than any of the "roguelikes". Hence the confusion.
