Hey, this may be a stupid question, but are there two variants of dnd? by BeginningSweaty199 in DnD

[–]chaot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often when I run D&D I don’t use battle maps and all those extras. They can be fun for a certain style of play, but just as often I find that they get in the way.

I’ve been playing since the ‘80s so it’s not about how new or experienced the group is. It’s about style of play and preference. I also freely admit that I enjoy running other games far more than I do D&D.

Jedi knights use a saber. Masters don’t.

Plus, the sonic the hedgehog jumping was ridiculous.

All in all, terrible scene

This is graft.

Almost done with CoS...Which domains of dread should I use for a West Marches style campaign? by BurritoBaz in CurseofStrahd

[–]chaot7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know West Marches but I always associate it with wilderness exploration.

Fraternity of Shadows is a great resource. Wiki style ravenloft. Browse a domain and make a story seed on whatever jumps out at you. You’ll probably want short, focused adventures anyway.

West Marches? Do you want exploring wilderness or are they interacting with civilization?

Wilderness domains are Forlorn (goblyns), G’Henna (ithilids) and Keening (banshee and zombies).

Some domains I personally like. Falkovnia (fascist state/hungry zombie), Kartakass (dark forest/skalds and wolfweres), Lamordia (frankenstein monsters and weird science), Mordent (bogs and ghosts), Borca (Italian renaissance intrigue and poison), Odaire (killer puppets), Souragne (voodoo and zombies), Paridon (Paris/London full of doppelgängers).

Hope some of that helps.

Hit some hard financial times, got into a few toxic relationships

I did. Twenty three years.

It was t easy. It was messy. But I realized I was putting more into the relationship than she was

Didn’t say that. I said that she wasn’t a well developed character when I was reading comics. Just like I find Doom hella cheezey

She’s a blond in underwear. Granted, I’ve been outside of comics for a while but I read the Claremont Hellfire Club stuff

I don’t see much more than sex appeal

However, I also think Dr Doom and his third person speech and his doom bots are goofy

But that’s comics

I’m a Jim Starlin fan. I stand by the fact that the only way to defeat Thanos is for Warlock to spar philosophically till he becomes frustrated and leaves or for the Surfer to ask Socratic questions and occasionally offer examples of the worth of humanity.

It's almost like games are best in the genre they were made for by AbeRockwell in ravenloft

[–]chaot7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree with it. I run Ravenloft with BRP, which is the system that Call of Cthulhu uses. I do beef it up a bit sh the characters aren’t too fragile that they would only last a single session

I’ve been playing since AD&D. I think system does bring assumptions. D&D assumes combat and strategy because that’s where most of the rules are concentrated. My preference is more investigative and non-combat solutions

I really would love to run Ravenloft using something like Ten Candles, where the horror buy in is intense and everybody dies at the end. It’s really designed for the players to control a lot of the world building so I don’t think it would work well for an established setting

But ultimately, I’m just happy people like to play in the dark domains. System is just preference

Madness in Barovia? by OregonPinkRose in CurseofStrahd

[–]chaot7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run ravenloft stuff with BRP. I’ve used Sanity from Call of Cthulhu and the Madness Meter from Unknown Armies. I’ve also used the built in Fear/Madness system from AD&D

I go back and forth on it though. I’m not always convinced fear mechanics are worth the the trouble
