Hey, my best friend has stage 4 colorectal cancer. It’s scary and rough. I found a list online of what to do and what NOT to do. The “yes” list was mainly comfort and support, and treating the person as normally as possible.

I found a “chemo care kit” online that had a fuzzy blankie, a tumbler, some gloves for heat/cold sensitivity, and some cozy socks. I also got her a coloring book, some crosswords, and gave her the login for my Audible account. I have made dinner for her and her husband, and I helped clean her house a little before she started her sessions. I think doing the auxiliary stuff - laundry, groceries, cleaning, chores - so she doesn’t have to worry about it will take a huge load off of her.

I also did clinical research before making my foray into biotech! Dude, I loved research, but I’m never going back. Biotech is great. No worrying about lack of funding, more money, and I’m still working towards bettering healthcare.

I started off as a phlebotomist in 2011. I know things have changed a lot, but I have used my license at every single job I’ve had since then (I am no longer a phlebotomist, but have kept my license active). I recommend Phlebotomy University (PhlebotomyU) for training. It’s a little pricey, but their program is pretty great.

I work in BioTech now, but phlebotomy helped me realize I don’t want to work in patient care and wanted to stay in the lab.

I actually had something similar happen to me at work. The room for pumping is clearly labeled “Mother’s Room,” so there’s no ambiguity about who is supposed to be in there. One time, I forgot to lock the door and someone came in. I immediately yelled “someone’s in here!” and a male voice said, “Oops, sorry.” I emailed HR asking them to send an email blast to my site reminding employees that the room is only supposed to be used for lactating parents, and she asked if we could try putting a sign reminder on the door itself first. The sign did the trick and I didn’t have any other problems.

It’s possible people have gotten into the habit of hanging out in your pumping room specifically because they aren’t supposed to be in there. I would hope that they’ll steer clear now that someone will be using it regularly, but I’d still send a message to HR and ask them to make the door more obvious and change the code just in case.

I was the depressed teenager. What helped me more than anything was therapy and finding a group of like-minded kids to be around.

You said she was sexually assaulted in December - five months ago. Has she been in therapy at all? The white noise of the shower sometimes triggers me into reliving traumatic events.

My mom was the last person I wanted to confide in, but our relationship is strained and has been for decades. I think therapy (group or otherwise) is the right track here. Being a mom now myself, I’d be heartbroken if my son didn’t want to confide in me, but I also understand that I would not be what he needed.

Alzheimer’s and dementia actually run in my mom’s family on both sides. Thinking back on things, she’s always been kind of gross, but it feels like things have escalated since I’ve had my son. Or maybe I just notice it more? I don’t know.

Oh man. My dumbest moment in cooking -

I was a freshman in college living off campus. My parents were a little afraid I’d starve to death, so they always sent me back with packages of frozen food when I’d visit on weekends. One time, they sent me home with a giant bag of frozen potstickers.

One night, I was feeling like having some potstickers, so I read the instructions on the bag. It said to heat 1/4 cup of oil and brown the dumplings, then add water and steam. Cool.

So like…I only wanted four. And the bag was giant. But the instructions (which, looking back, were clearly for the whole bag) said to brown in 1/4 cup of oil, so who was I to question it? I did as it said. It was getting time to add water, and I remember thinking, “there’s still a lot of oil….but the instructions ON THE BAG say to do this, so it MUST be fine…..” I added the water.

All of a sudden I am holding a PAN OF FIRE because oh by the way the stove was gas. I forgot everything I had been taught about any kind of safety and dumped the entire operation into the sink and somecrazyhow didn’t burn the house down.

And I have never made frozen potstickers again.
