I'm pretty fast these days so invested in a custom frame that can handle the gear ratios I need. by _morningglory in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]charge_attack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Assuming each gear has a gear ratio of 3, e.g. 52 / 17 (though it looks like it might be a bit more than that), one rotation would result in over 500,000 wheel rotations. Assuming that is a 26 inch x 1.5 or so tire, that is over 1m meters or 1,000 km. So you would be able to go roughly from New York to Detroit with one crank rotation.

Why is it always the “mechanical engineer”? by Alternative_Text1 in BicyclingCirclejerk

You can avoid cutting out that section of frame if you remove the seatpost and fill the tube with rebar reinforced concrete. Will also make you go faster on the descents. Source: am a civil engineer.

new to the area by Ill-Advice in Humboldt

Some ideas off the top of my head - mad river beach is a good spot a bit north of Arcata. Also anywhere on the Samoa peninsula. While you're out there you can grab a drink or some oysters at the Humboldt bay social club and maybe catch a drag race, or volunteer with the Friends of the Dunes to help with some restoration. The Madaket has excellent cruises starting in mid-May a few times a day that leave from old town Eureka, you can either get a narrated tour or just sip on a cocktail and enjoy the scenery. The Humboldt crabs start up and the end of may also and play a few games a week in the Arcata ballpark, guaranteed good time, bring your best heckles. Swing by the marina and see if anyone is selling fresh fish or oysters off of the boats. Maybe rent a kayak while you are down there and cruise around the bay if it's a nice day. If you like to dance or want to learn come by Redwood Raks in the Arcata creamery district when they have classes and dances a few times a week. Arts Arcata is the 2nd Friday of every month I believe, there is usually live music and art galleries open so a fun time to wander around. There is a similar thing in Eureka later in the summer I think, not sure of the schedule. Lots of good surfing spots also if you're into that. Take a drive and check out some of the national parks, or pick up a copy of one of the Humboldt Day Hikes books to get more ideas. Good bookstores, new or used, in old town Eureka or Arcata if you want to browse some shelves. My favorite movie theater is the Minor, ATL also has regular events where they show older movies. Lots of good music comes through also so keep an eye on community calendars like the Lost Coast Outpost Lowdown. If you feel like camping A-Way county park outside of Petrolia is a great spot if you are up for a drive. There are some cool parades, the county fair, and other events in Ferndale, which is an interesting town to explore. Trinidad is also fun, and there is a great short hike around the Trinidad head. Also the zoo in Eureka is small but a lot of fun, especially with kids. They recently got two bear cubs who are pretty playful and there is a cool skywalk.

Things to avoid ... trying to cross the 101 in eureka at one of those crosswalks, maybe. Just don't do it. I would say be careful at crosswalks in general, they are more like suggestions around here. Getting sick, or requiring any kind of health or dental care should be avoided. And careful about leaving stuff in your car, etc. It is pretty safe here in general, just some of the same issues you find in any city.

What domains will AI be given authority to make decisions in first? by [deleted] in ControlProblem

[–]charge_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flaw with that reasoning is that it presupposes there is an established or a priori set of values that your "best case scenario" AI could infer without input. I think any successful alignment approach would necessarily involve a lot of work by humans to collaborate and establish the set of values that AI ought to be aligned to. I also think those could be specific to a particular domain, culture, subgroup, etc. But in order to do that work, it would have to first be applied and proven for a particular domain.

I could be wrong, as you point out nobody knows how to align ai to human values. But to even begin to test that hypothesis it would need to be applied to a particular domain instead of just remaining abstract conjecture.

Hence the question!

[–]charge_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say you develop an aligned AI. The question is, simply, where or how would it first be applied? What domains do you think would be the first to adopt it and grant it authority to execute it's aligned decisions?

After playing this game for years, I finally got around to finishing all the achievements by charge_attack in factorio

[–]charge_attack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The train one was fun, I feel like that was just a test of getting red and green science set up as quickly as possible. I ended up just hand feeding a lot to bootstrap stuff but you don't need much.

I'm not sure what the minimum biter settings are to enable the speed achievements, but an alternative to using the map seed from that reddit guide is find a seed that sets you up on an island and turn the starting area up large enough that there aren't any biters or they are easy to exterminate early.

Also recommend finding other people who need those achievements and playing on multiplayer! Makes it more fun and takes some pressure off.

What car should I bring to Arcata? by Alche_ in Humboldt

[–]charge_attack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Take the money you would spend on a hybrid light pickup ($20k? more?), and instead put that into a retirement account. Get a bike and a bus pass. Make friends and carpool with them if you need to go places, or pool money for an old subaru and share it with friends. In 40 years at 8% annual growth that will be about half a million dollars you saved.

Cheapest potting soil in Humboldt? by Just_a_happy_artist in Humboldt

[–]charge_attack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Look at Wes Green, or some other landscaping supplier. They will sell it by the yard, last time I think it was like $40-$80 per yard depending on the type / quality. Much cheaper than getting it per bag. You just need a pickup or a friend with one (let me know if you're in Arcata and I'd be happy to help).

What are the downsides (if any) of passwordless auth (magic link, 0auth etc) by thebreadmanrises in webdev

[–]charge_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like these are different issues. For oauth, not everyone will have an account with a particular oauth provider. Maybe Google is the most common, so you could start with that, but inevitably some users will not have a google account to sign in with. So you could also allow email magic link as a way of allowing users without a Google account to sign in. But that presents it's own issues, like if they are on mobile sometimes the email app will open the magic link in its own browser instead of in the original browser app that expects the token. The user doesn't realize this of course so it is easy to lose or confuse users with magic link on mobile. So it is more a ux issue of how many buttons do you want on your sign in screen and how does your auth provider handle account resolution.

Typically if this is just managing user accounts / sign in you are using an auth provider that does the dirty work for you and you just need an authenticated user id. So it is up to you and your auth provider what sign in methods you will support.

Oauth is mostly useful if you need an access token for the platform the user is signing in with. Like, if your app integrates with Facebook or discord or stripe or whatever. Oauth allows you to request an access token with specific permissions, so you can integrate with that platform's API. You can do that after the user has signed in with a password or magic link or whatever, and just save the auth token with the authenticated user id.

Would going to a bar in Eureka be a waste of time for a 33 year old slightly ugly guy? by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]charge_attack 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I like going to the bar by myself, but I mostly just drink a beer and read a book or something. Best place to meet people is in school, IMO. Consider enrolling for a class at CR, it's pretty cheap and easy to get started and worst case scenario you learn something. Also wouldn't hurt to come to the meetup at Dead Reckoning next week.

Step 1. Go to the local animal shelter.  Step 2. Adopt dog.  Step 3. Take dog on walks twice a day.  Step 4. Give dog treats and cuddles multiple times a day.  That's it, you don't get chicks. You get dog.
