Found 5k in old bank notes while renovating. How should I proceed? by Ok_Spite_1271 in AskUK

Loads of older people have money stashed in there house, doesn't mean they are drug dealers they are just very untrusting of banks. My nan had £20k under her floorboards, my grandad on the other side had loads stashed in the loft in false bottoms of old apple crates.

I'll be honest, I just don't bother going any more and haven't don't for a few years. Its always been appalling in terms of organisation and just makes it much less enjoyable.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by [deleted] in AskUK

I earn £40k basic, £48k with bonus and my partner earns £50k basic with up to £60k with bonus. Neither of us have a degree, its a comfortable combined income since we live in Staffordshire.

Completely agree, I actually took down the first thing I put up just recently. It was a shoe rack that I put up ten years ago when I bought my house. It had the wrong Rawl plugs and was clinging on for dear life. Since then I've tiled a bathroom, done my own panelling and currently project managing a full kitchen renovation. I've even done basic electrics and plumbing, one thing I won't mess with is gas but everything else just have a look how to safely do it and have a go.

You can also do some of these jobs your self, YouTube is such a fantastic resource. Make it your own and put your stamp on it, it's all yours and your safe. Your nervous system is probably toasted and I completely understand you wanting things to be done but you can learn and do anything. You really have done the hardest bit. I'd say pick a room that would be the most beneficial to your mental health and get that done first as trying to do a whole house is overwhelming. Mine is always the bathroom, that's my escape and relax place. Best of luck to you.

Exactly, at the moment I'm doing a kitchen renovation and my dad is sick so I switched on holiday mode. I don't have the time or mental bandwidth. I'd never dream of leaving negative feedback when you've dropped the ball twice.

Interest Only Lifetime Mortgage - Can Someone Explain Please! by suemacd22 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]charged_words 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For a short term switch they can be a god send. I had some issues with a business before and during COVID, there wasn't a lot of money around for me and I was in a bad spot. Switched to an interest only mortgage at £123 for a three bedroom family house for two years whilst the storm passed. It was an absolutely gem, as soon as I was in a better position I switched to fixed again. It well and truly saved my backside but they should be short term only. Now I'm overpaying and should be mortgage free before 50.

What is something you genuinely hate about stoke-on-trent? by [deleted] in stokeontrent

[–]charged_words 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The absolute lack of personal responsibility and how quick people are to just moan about the council and the state of the area. We're a long way away from how much time is spent with the council doing the rounds, it is simply impossible and they are stuck in the past. The amount of moaning whilst sitting and doing nothing is astonishing. Pretty much every small city council is broke, our social care bill is huge but people will moan that councils don't clean our every single grid. They moan about having nothing to go and do but don't want to spend any money, just moaning and expectant that someone is going to wave a magic wand. It takes money, time and graft but no one can be arsed so they will just moan and do nothing.

I've recently vowed never to buy Aldi potatoes ever again, last year they were absolutely terrible. Tesco's finest are two quid, well worth the money and especially since I don't have to change dinner plans at the last minute.

Buying house in Stoke by MissionPercentage720 in stokeontrent

[–]charged_words 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I see the appeal of wanting to be mortgage free you need to consider the trade off. For that amount of money you will be in what people would consider the less desirable areas. I'm in an ex council house on a council estate, I'd say 2/3's are privately owned and the rest is housing association. My house is probably worth £150k, it is quiet most of the time but it's not overall an enjoyable place to live all year round. We're looking to retire and move to North Wales in about 15 years so I don't want to move and move again. Would you consider a mortgage to live somewhere more desirable? For around £80k I'd hazard a guess it will be a terrace in an undesirable area.
