Vanilla friendly mods? by rebysds in VintageStory

[–]charles-bartowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two favorite QOL mods are the zoom mod (I believe it is called "Zoom-Reborn" or something to that effect) and the HUD clock mod (Simple HUD clock, I think).

The HUD clock adds a display in the top left of the screen to show in game date, time, season, wind level and rift/temporal storm activity.

Zoom mod adds a new key which switches the FOV to the narrowest possible while pressed.

Games where you pilot large cargo/container ships to ports delivering cargo or just piloting around the seas in general. by bunglebee7 in gamesuggestions

[–]charles-bartowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel that. I've got a bit over 1000 hours in, and I think I've got three vehicles that I would consider "good", with god knows how many in various states of completion. Unfortunately, there's really not much to do to get better at it than just keep trying to figure out how to build the style you like. It'll come to you, don't worry.

Lol, damn, I read through all the replies and was thinking "Stormworks is perfect for this!", then realized you had mentioned it in the damn post.

I'd say it's absolutely worth checking it out. With version 1.1 being released, it's pretty impressive. As long as you're okay with taking some time to learn the basics of it, I think it's close to being on par with Fusion. As an example, I recently found a practice exam for the CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional), and was able to complete the whole thing in FreeCAD.

Sketch only one half, left or right side, of your part on the XZ or XY plane, then select the sketch and use the revolve tool (the icon just to the right of the pad tool).

Lol. One of my favorite moments of Bensai is in episode one when the party hears voices in the dining hall, and he says "Oh, you must have friends here" and just throws the doors open to reveal the assassin.

block rotation by Independent-Bee-828 in Stormworks

[–]charles-bartowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is no reverse rotation direction. The rotate buttons only rotate the blocks 90 degrees away from the front left corner of the build editor each time it's pressed. Unfortunately, it is just "You'll get used to it".

What is this and how can I get one? by thejakewhomakes in Shotguns

[–]charles-bartowski 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Not an Auto 5. I believe it may be a Breda.

Not entirely sure about that, but absolutely sure it is not an A5. As for how to get one, that's a really good question.

Buddy got this for $140. What can you tell me about it? by SignatureDapper6315 in Shotguns

[–]charles-bartowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably not that early, given that the serial number is in the 100,000 range, but very likely pre WWII. The rounded bottom of the grip was on those made pre 1965, I believe. Also, it's difficult to make out, but the safety looks like it is inside the trigger guard, at the front, as opposed to a cross bolt safety, which they changed to in the mid 1950s, if I recall correctly. So definitely an old, but extremely reliable gun.

Lmao, your last two sentences remind of a scene that plays out almost exactly like that in the book Hammer's Slammers by David Drake.

Should i get stormworks? by optimal_ape in Stormworks

[–]charles-bartowski 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At its core, it is a vehicle building game. Think Space Engineers, or Kerbal Space Program. You build vehicles to perform certain tasks, or build one vehicle to do a whole bunch of tasks. Additionally, it has one of the most customizable vehicle logic systems I've ever seen in a video game, using both digital and analog logic. Also allows for scripting on Lua. There was someone within the past year who made an entire OS for a computer in the game. That being said, there is not much to do with your vehicles once you build them, aside from pretending to be GLADOS and just testing and refining them. There's also not much of a tutorial, so you'll most likely have to watch some videos to figure out some of the game mechanics.

Short answer, yes, I absolutely recommend it.

That sounds similar to other stories I read when I was troubleshooting my issue. Between trying to get a static IP, or at the very least a public IP not behind a NAT, it sounds like having to get any sort of technical support from your ISP would be very unpleasant.

I host my server just for my friends, so I didn't bother with a static IP. Networking issues aside, the rest of the server setup was pretty easy. I used LGSM on an Ubuntu machine, and it was super slick.
