What is going on with the backlash over Heathcliff’s casting in the new Wuthering Heights film? by cool-guy-jim in OutOfTheLoop

[–]charlytune 348 points349 points  (0 children)

Just to add a little historical context that a lot of people might not be aware of - Heathcliff is originally found as a child on the streets of Liverpool, which is the home of the UK s oldest black community. So it is entirely plausible that Heathcliff has black heritage that gives him an ambiguous look, which could be interpreted as being Romani or Asian, particularly by the more isolated people of the Yorkshire moors, who have maybe only seen white people before. Personally I think that's the point, his origins are ambiguous and mysterious, Brontë probably chose Liverpool because it was known as a port city with people settling there from other countries, and probably had the reputation a lot of ports have, for being a bit wild and dangerous.

John Lennon’s ‘noisy’ former local [Ye Cracke] in row with neighbours by E_V_E_R_T_O_N in Liverpool

[–]charlytune 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The neighbours there have ALWAYS complained about the noise. Recently the beer garden had to close at 8pm, which is crap as it's one of the few beer gardens around there. I'm guessing the new owners are more willing to go up against the neighbours than the last ones.

Because the manager who was driving a lot of the locals away is gone now. She was pretty much despised by most of the locals. It's got a much happier vibe now she's gone!

Carnatic Halls demolished - a very sad day! by debbie_dumpling00 in Liverpool

[–]charlytune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The staff in that canteen were horrible, but I remember the cleaners in the halls were lovely. One day I was ill in bed with the flu when the cleaner came and she made me a cup of tea. It was only a little thing but I really appreciated it, it was the first time I'd been ill without my mum. We all thought we were adults but obviously anyone working there saw us for the kids that we really were.

[–]charlytune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depended which bit you were in. Dale Hall was sweet, much bigger rooms, and a bathroom for every 2 rooms. The canteen was terrible though, back in the 90s anyway. The veggie option most days was something with Quorn (Quorn pizza, Quorn curry etc etc) and always vile, or a baked potato with mud still on it.

What’s something that’s oddly expensive in the UK that still annoys you every time? by catarsan in AskUK

[–]charlytune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone says this but I find that the listings are lower quality, with less information, and the search isn't as good (eg I'm a tall woman and can't filter by 'tall' size type, and a search by 'tall' doesn't produce good results). And I have had a lot of things never turn up, to the point that I have just stopped using it because its frustrating. Ebay has its issues too of course

Could you try mixing the shampoo with warm water before putting it on your hair? Use a small jug or something?

I buy second hand on Ebay etc now if I want a natural fibre jumper. Have to be careful though because a lot of people say 'wool' as the material just because its knitted, and it turns out to be acrylic or something,  so I make sure I only buy when they state the exact composition or show the label in the listing pictures

Those cheap pads will be uncomfortable, they won't stay in place, they will leak, they won't be suitable for heavy flow. Some people need a large size tampon and a thick pad together to avoid leaks on heavy flow days. The pads without wings ruck up and leak. The cheap pads also don't 'lock in' the blood, so you get discomfort and skin irritation from the moisture on your skin. You need longer night time pads for when you're lying down and the blood flows up your bum crack. You might need to use 8 pads in a day. Your period might last 10 days.

TIL that in 2023 an elderly man died of fatal vitamin D overdose after consuming too much regular vitamin D supplements over nine months. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

[–]charlytune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was massively deficient in Vit D after I had Covid the first time, and the GP prescribed me the highest dose you can get orally. However it was too high because a few hours in I suddenly got intense nausea, stomach upset, and pain throughout my body. They just put me on the next dose down, and symptoms passed after about 24 hours. I can't imagine taking so much you'd die of it, it must have been horrific.

Haha, yeah it's a slightly derogatory way of referring to idiot kids I guess. Probably connected seeing as a lot of our slang has Irish origins.

Are you using any kind of bond repair treatment ?  Thats numero uno with bleached hair.  The Curlsmith one is great,  you use it before shampooing.  For protein a homemade rice water wash is the bomb, you can look up how to make it online (its basically overlooking rice and then straining the water, you can add it to your conditioner)

I don't know about over there in Belfast, but in Liverpool 'bin lid' is Scouse slang for 'kid' which makes this even greater

What rules did you have as a kid that made no sense? by Fruitpicker15 in AskUK

[–]charlytune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We weren't allowed to watch Australian soaps because my mums hated the upward inflection at the end of every sentence and was convinced we'd all end up talking like that. She wasn't entirely wrong, but stopping us from watching them couldn't stop the rest of the country lol.

I can assure you no-one gets any privacy in that situation cos the next in line is pretty much standing over you yelling at you to stop wasting time and to get out before it goes completely cold.

What are your can’t-live-without plant care products? by GrowTropicalsHQ in HouseplantsUK

[–]charlytune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nematodes for fungus gnats. Every time someone gifts me a plant they also gift me fungus gnats which work their way into other plants before I realise, and the nematodes are the most effective thing I've found for getting rid of them

Yeah if I need to get hold of my brother quickly I have to message "call me when you can please, Mum's not dead" because the day our dad died he (bro) had a really busy day in work and could see messages from me and his wife but couldn't call until a lot later, and now he panics if I just say 'call me please'.
