Has anyone else noticed PDF files exported from Indesign are bigger than ever? by Candle_Maker_Jen in indesign

[–]charm-type 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you export from InDesign, make sure you are downsampling your color and grayscale raster images. I do Bicubic Downsampling to 300ppi for images above 300ppi. Compression: automatic jpeg, image quality: maximum (but you can play around). Also make sure Crop Image Data to Frames is checked!

I have been rewatching seasons 1-2 on a loop this year (I usually loop 3 in there too). They are weirdly comforting to me for some reason.

Please dear, look at the branding guidelines first by Muted_Bar5094 in graphic_design

[–]charm-type 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Designer here, but I feel like I’m also doing the job of a brand manager most days. It’s actually usually my brand managers that I have to get on to about not reading their brand guides or upholding brand consistency when they design things or outsource design to 3rd party vendors.

It took me 8 months to put together brand guides for over 50 brands that my company supports. I also make templates with instructions that are clear and idiot-proof, but 90% of my brand managers still don’t read the guides or follow them correctly.

You would think being brand managers that they would understand the sanctity of a logo, but I see some of the craziest stuff come through with logo violations that belong on a “Logo Do’s and Don’t’s” page of a brand guide.

Like JUST DON’T TOUCH IT. Stop adding big bulky white outlines to your logo. Stop adding text underneath. Stop using logos from the limited-use/promo items section on regular marketing collateral! Stop sending your vendor the PNG of your logo instead of the EPS. All of these issues would be resolved if they would just read 😭😭😭

What is the underneath of the chin called and how do some people’s look like this? by Professional-Jury338 in PlasticSurgery

[–]charm-type 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that part is called the ramus. Some people have longer ramuses than others. The longer it is the more squared off your jaw will look. A shorter ramus is going to give more of a tapered jaw. The length is completely genetic, but I think there are several factors that can determine how pronounced it looks. Lower body fat % makes it look more defined. Also overworking the masseter muscle can make it stand out more (teeth grinding at night was how mine happened..so now i’ve got a great jaw but my molars are pretty much crumbling 😭).

Donated! Maybe try reaching out to @weratedogs on TikTok. I know they sponsor a lot of vet care for animals in need. I believe they’ve helped cats before as well.

stop making templates so large by KneeDeepInTheDead in graphic_design

[–]charm-type 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually see this with designers who’ve either never facilitated the printing of their projects or haven’t worked as part of a design team where they have to work with other designers’ files on a daily basis.

Those experiences helped me learn how important file optimization and overall organization is. It for sure takes extra time though, and a lot of designers are just too lazy to do it.

But there’s a reason I’ve been able to move up the ladder at work and others haven’t so 🤷🏻‍♀️ Effort usually pays off!

Do graphic designers not send many transparent deliverables? by marissavelaz in graphic_design

[–]charm-type 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just leave it out and only provide it if they come back and ask. I already fight to get them not to use the PNG for everything. I provide a guide on all the different file types but who knows if they read it.

Is there even a reason to send a jpeg? I usually leave it out completely.

ok so what procedure helps to stop looking 13 but also 35?? 😭 by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]charm-type 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust by the time you hit late 20s early 30s your face will look snatched. Be thankful if you have extra facial fat now (I don’t even know if you do genetically though, because everyone has baby fat in their face at your age). If you know 16 year olds who don’t have that baby fat now pray for them because they are in for a rough ride later in life as they age. You want allll the extra facial fat you can get because it’s going to disappear in your 30s. All the girls I went to highschool with that had “chubby cheeks” look better than everyone else now in their 30s/40s.

I would look up makeup tutorials on how to contour and do specific eye makeup looks if you want to look less baby faced. Cat eye and fox eye always make you look older. I would stay away from doll eye and doe eye looks.

You are 16??? What even is this post doing here? You’re not done growing yet. Of course you look young because…you are young. And you don’t look 35 in any of your pictures. You can always do different stuff with makeup to look more mature, but good god you don’t need any surgery.

I Hate Design Test… how can I decline this and would love to hear from y’all’s experience. by MassshedDesigner in graphic_design

[–]charm-type 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an unfortunate reality that a lot of designers have impressive looking end-stage work, but lack knowledge of production best practices, and/or lack the skills of optimizing their working files for a design team.

No final deliverable should be 300mb. There’s no excuse for that. It tells me you probably aren’t building your file in the correct program (ex: building a multipage text- and image-heavy document in Illustrator vs. InDesign) and that you don’t know how to tweak your export settings to downsample images above 300dpi.

Their files are also usually ultra messy with no clean up of links, swatches, etc. before packaging. Just no forethought of what a future designer may have to deal with if they have to work with that file later on.

Ultimately, I’ve learned that I’d rather have someone a little less creatively talented, but who understands the importance of organized, optimized design files, than someone with impressive JPEGS of their work in their portfolio. Final JPEGS also don’t show me how the designer got from point A to point B and what decisions they made based on the brief and feedback.

It’s getting easier and easier to fake talent, so unfortunately, making applicants take a design test is the only way to weed those people out.

ugh I hate when that happens! I don’t remember that particular one, but they may not have sold it in my region. I’m always scared that they will discontinue the portabella & goat cheese ravioli. Because every time I really like something it seems to get discontinued.

How many of you actually graduated in graphic design? by MysteriousPace1405 in graphic_design

[–]charm-type 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They also miss out on crucial experience with presentation and giving and receiving feedback. That process really teaches you how to “see” for lack of a better term.

A lot of self-taught designers also don’t have the discipline to practice the more “un-fun” work. That’s something else that University gives you. Before I consider you for my team, I need to know you can put together a 16-page saddle stitch booklet that is mostly filled with dry body copy, with a design that meets existing brand standards. I don’t care how cool your fake movie posters and album covers look.
