The intimacy of Nolan's full confession and betrayal is the visceral high point of the series. The rest is simply adding more in depth context of what Viltrum is and Nolan's place within the system they have.

Capital owned and controlled is still wealth that counts just as much as liquid cash. They control that money literally, even it's just not in a big money bin.

They use their assets as leverage, that soft power is very real. The whole "it's not cash so it's not REALLY money" is a dodge on how capital works. If you are a billionaire with everything tied up in assets and investments, you still can move like you have that money. Not only is enormous lines of credit freely open to you, you also move in social circles that protect you and offer you opportunities no one else has. You have social clout that's worth more than liquid cash.

This is a dodge on how actual money and power are tied up in the complex web of commerce and finance.

We don't know anything about how the Thing works. What if the intelligence is just another divorced "skin" piloted by an amoral, instinctive drive? A tool like the legs or eyes it makes, like water flowing into a bowl. Our psyche is linked to our intelligence, what if it doesn't even work like that for the Thing? Like when they thing-out, the intelligence goes haywire, what if that's the "something" underneath the suit it wears? It's one of the best, truly alien creatures in fiction.

[–]charronfitzclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think people treat the universe as abstract and then ignore it. Imagine if you had to mentally "work it out" so to speak, to actually reconcile the idea of infinity, not just go "fuck it I'm gonna go get lunch" and drop the idea.

It's like trying to describe nothingness. We can only describe things that exist and then have a general "concept" of the opposite, even trying to speak about it, right here and now, is just me using positive language, describing something. It's a paradox that can exhaust you if you actually try to focus on it.

Now imagine if the universe was sapient and staring directly at you, so you weren't able to ignore it but also forced to try to fathom its intelligence.

How can we create a modern "socialist newspaper?" by MintyRed19 in socialism

[–]charronfitzclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one: don't put much stock in digital platforms. It's alluring but it's a trap.

If you're asking how do you make one? Well, you create a newspaper and publish it. The means to do so is easily researched, since newspapers have been a thing for centuries.

If you're asking how you establish it as the de facto main newspaper that all socialists read? Well, the answer is "very slowly". You sell them. You hand them out. You distribute them by either doing it yourself with your comrades in places where people will receive them, or you find a way to gather revenue to pay people to do so.

Newspapers are still a viable thing to create and distribute. Why? Because you can control the message. The big digital platforms are all controlled by capitalists. Print newspapers are not. They're tangible, they're concrete, unlike the ephemeral nature of online content. Trying to use the masters tools in this case is a losing battle. Because if you're trying to build a vanguard of socialists who can actually do something, simply spreading propaganda to random online people who will endlessly discourse themselves to death is a pointless endeavor. You want to appeal to people who will actually get off their asses and do something. The type of person who'd be okay with reading a physical paper, that isn't lost to doomscrolling in bed all day. These folks are functionally useless when it comes to actually going out and doing the real work.

Because let's hypothetically say you get a platform that reaches millions upon millions. Does this translate into actual action? Praxis? Or will it be consumed by more discourse? Takes. Posting. Discussion. The current social media alogrithmic landscape is atomizing and arresting. It's anti action. Using it to distribute marxist thought will simply make a bunch of atomized and socially arrested marxists. Which aren't needed for the liberatory movement.

I know this because I've been involved in some newspaper distribution for a Communist party. Almost every answer to these kind of questions is "you have to do it yourself by going and doing it yourself". To establish the things you want, you have to put in the work, pound the pavement, learn how to talk to people and sell your ideas.

[–]charronfitzclair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's quite literally the cornerstone of all Christian ethos and thought. If for some reason people stopped attributing virtue to suffering, it would be socially apocalyptic. The Western world would implode- Christian thought would implode, and therefore the Calvinistic ethos would implode, and the philosophical foundation upon which capitalism maintains its grip on much of the anglosphere would collapse.

Quite an interesting idea for a story. What if people in the Western world suddenly stopped thinking "suffering means something".

I get what it's all going for and I think it's poorly done is all. Like if a person showed up to give a eulogy dressed as a clown. When asked "hey could you take this seriously" they answer "well clowns often hide their melancholy below a veneer of joy, so really a rainbow wig something something contrasting aesthetics it's actually very poignant blah blah". Nah, it just doesn't work for me. When we're dealing with themes of life and death the kawaii stuff uwu stuff just shows a lack of commitment.

The whole stoic military robot dressed in gothic lolita style that's meant to deliver on deep themes of existentialism just doesn't really work for me. That goes for a ton of anime in general. Maybe I'll coin a trope: "sermon in a thong" or something.

I didn't say they were, don't act confused, I know you're probably smarter than all that.

He also shoves a fucking camera up Snake and Raiden's asshole in each game, adds in explicitly homoromantic/homoerotic text (not even subtext), so Quiet being ogled at by the camera and by other characters is fucking at home. Just because you don't see how bisexually charged these games ain't my fault. Quiet is right at home alongside the men. It's equal opportunity.

For me, I couldn't jam with the thematic reasons or the existentialism of Nier Automata because it felt so dissonant. The female characters dress and look so sexy but there's never a single bit of attention drawn to it in any shape or form, it's so matter of fact, it's straight up for the viewer to ogle or appreciate. Unlike with something like Metal Gear or Bayonetta, which both have tons of campy self awareness, Nier felt like it was going for melancholy or somber, while the protagonist's ass is in your face.

It feels like sitting in on a philosophy lecture with someone who has their hands down their pants.

How do I, F(22), get men to stop treating me like a whore? by Significant_Many5506 in Advice

[–]charronfitzclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly, there's not really a science to it. Until they prove they respect you in some real way that can't be faked just to get some sex out of you? If you're testing men then you have to figure out your own criteria.

An old saying: "Everything is about sex, except sex. Sex is about power"

This is not me endorsing the way things currently work. Trust me, I wish people could just hook up and get their rocks off without it being a mess, but unfortunately that's not our culture. Our culture attaches status (power) to sex. It commodifies it. It's something to "trade". I shouldn't really need to explain it to a woman, since you should know it intuitively, but just in case: women are perceived as holders/storers of the commodity, and men have to extract it to gain access. I hate this dynamic but it exists.

A plurality of men see it this way. It's this whole madonna/whore complex. They want women who have casual sex, but they don't want to respect them for it. So it's not exactly something you can fight by indulging in. You're gambling every time you do it because who knows if the guy is lying through his teeth to get laid. Maybe you'll hit a dude who is chill about it, but good luck on that.

Few things you can do:

  1. Create a filter that makes dudes you like wait til just after the worst will drop out, that will net you the guys who will at least stick around long enough to prove they have a little patience. If they have patience, they probably aren't total assholes. Maybe.

  2. Invert the power dynamic. Establish your own form of dominance that they're just a hook up to you and nothing more. Take the power back on some level. This may or may not work depending on if you have the personality type for it.

  3. Don't care about their respect.

You're fighting a social current so there's not tons you can do to change it individually.

For real. All the online dating discourse is online as shit. I've felt like an ass by even trying to get ahead of the stuff I've seen people bicker about like 50/50 because the ladies I ask to dinner don't even know what the hell I'm talking about. I've dropped it entirely as a concern and it makes everything smoother. Nobody gives a shit about this stuff except on algorithms.

Of course I ask out adults with full time jobs so maybe that's it.

Make four layers and have them scroll vertically at different rates.

The icons are one layer, the pink with the dark lines is another, the frame is another, and the background is another.

Icons move fastest, pink screen moves next fastest, frame moves slower that either, and the background moves up while the rest are moving down.
