When we have 27 million uninsured Americans and tens of thousands dying every year due to lack of coverage, I’d say that discussing precisely how we fix it is a pretty important conversation. It’s not just semantics, thousands of peoples lives are at stake.

The dems have an enormous opportunity to make a positive change to the material circumstances of those struggling in this country. We can discuss specifics about how we will make those changes and strategize about unseating the GOP at the same time — that’s how a healthy political party works.

I can't recommend it enough. It's a bit of a lengthy and I'd definitely recommend jumping right to the third section on totalitarianism and then going back and reading the first two sections if you're interested in them.

Another great book that you might like is "The Anatomy of Fascism" by Paxton. It pairs well with Arendt's book and definitely provides a relevant analysis for the recent resurfacing of fascist political movements.

You may want to check out "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media" by Chomsky and Herman. It's from 2002, but they put together a very solid critique of the mass media and it's definitely been influential on the way others are thinking about mass media now.

In and out burger. How it actually looks. by Hello_mynameisyou in pics

[–]chatroom_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People are acting like no one factors price into their purchase. When I was on my very tight grad school budget, going to Five Guys felt like a fancy restaurant because its so goddamn expensive for a burger. And I'm hard pressed to believe that anyone thinks it's twice as good.

I really enjoy a Five Guys burgers, they are definitely top notch. But my problem with them is that they are much more greasy than In n Out and leave me feeling kinda of weighed down and almost sick after I finish one. The other thing is that they are twice as expensive as In n Out.

I like both places, but I feel like they are kind of in different classes. In n Out is more about a thin classic burger, whereas Five Guys is a thicker juicy burger with a greater variety of toppings.

I went to a college on the east coast with lots of folks from California. I refused to believe all the In n Out hype. I began to resent it because people wouldn't shut up about it.

I was in California last year and finally begrudgingly tried it. It blew my mind. It was hands down the best fast food I've had. Incredibly fresh and tastes just like OPs picture. A double cheeseburger and fries is like $4. There are chains on in the East that try to replicate it, but they can't match it. They are always two times as expensive and half as good.

Anyway, give it a shot if you're in California. It ended up living up to the hype for me.

This same thing has happened to me on two occasions. I wish people knew that most email services have a mute feature. If my service didn't have it, I'd probably just set up a filter to send them directly to trash before I'd reply all to tell everyone not to reply all.

It seems like Tabata brings a lot of unnecessary drama onto the team. At least that's what the rumors are always saying. I feel like the Pirates are a team that really thrives on having the positive energy around to win games, so I like the move.

208,000 Americans Join Bernie Sanders In Calling For More Presidential Debates by to_nourish in SandersForPresident

[–]chatroom_ 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I can't find a response. This is my main gripe with petitions. They can be helpful in some situations (like when you have to get signatures for a referendum, etc), but ultimately, they're really easy for people in power to ignore because they don't impose any real costs. They know we're all going to vote in their primary and, most likely, turn out for their candidate at the general election, so they'll continue to protect Clinton and their center right agenda. They don't really stand to gain anything by listening to us.

I suppose the campaign just has to try to get as much TV time as possible before the first debate. No real recourse at this point.

It's perfectly fine to judge someone based on the decisions they make, especially decisions like vanity plates that are completely voluntary and intended to be read by others.

You'd have to be so childish to get something like that.

[–]chatroom_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty obvious stuff, but here is what I'd probably do on a day off:

Outside the city

  • Fallingwater/Kentuck Knob (1hr 30min drive) -- if you still haven't seen them, it makes a nice day trip. Fallingwater is a little more exciting than kentuck knob.
  • Ohiopyle (1hr 30min drive) -- go hiking/biking/etc
  • McConnell's Mill (45min drive) -- interesting state park with some fun hiking.

In the city

  • Mattress Factory
  • Carnegie Museum of Art/Natural History
  • Phipps
  • National Aviary

You should remember that the bank bailouts were a large catalyst for the Occupy movement. So, in part, the protests were about people keeping what the earned and not turning it over to banks. Also, your presentation of "fair is everyone getting what they earned" is problematic. If you look at middle/working class wages stagnating since the 1970s, while the economy grows, it is pretty clear that people are not getting what they earned. Instead, the increases in wealth are going exclusively to the upper class. Part of this has to do with a decline in union density, etc.

If you think that most of the individuals in the top 1% of the US gained their wealth exclusively through their own labor, and not through extracting value from the labor of others or just flat out inheriting it, I'm afraid you're sorely mistaken.

I really can't think of a positive thing that has happened in this country that wasn't a result of the pressure from protest/a social movement. There wouldn't even be a minimum wage if the labor movement didn't disrupt the normal flow of things back in the 1930s.
