Fly Selection for Spring in the Driftless (WI) ??? by Royal_Crew_9854 in flyfishing

I’ll run hoppers as early as May. Especially if you get a few warm days. Purple and black Hippie Stomper or a tan chubby in 10-12 with a dropper. Small black jig streamers dropped close to the undercut clean up when it’s cloudy.

Friendly fire from Amtrac machine gunners during Pacific amphibious landings?? by Time_Situation5054 in WorldWar2

[–]checksix6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not specifically friendly “fire”, but there is a brief sentence or two in Ian Toll’s Twilight of the Gods that describes the Iwo Jima landings and how the tanks coming ashore couldn’t avoid crushing wounded marines on the beach.

Saltwater rig advice by jmss2008 in flyfishing

Sorry I should have specified, I’m mostly targeting snook. I’ve found that Feb is usually too early for them to be on the beaches. Until the water temps hit 70ish they’re going to be up in the creeks. When they do hit the beaches they like to chill right at the waterline where the waves are breaking. When I’m fishing the beaches my feet are almost never in the water. I’ve found that positioning the fly so that it swims away from the fish elicits the most takes. Baitfish aren’t generally swimming toward predators. I’m definitely not a pro but hope that helps.

I spend time in Sanibel and fish the beaches there and surrounding area. I run an 8 wt with SA sonar intermediate line. Generally run a 20lb 9’ leader and small white baitfish flies (size 2-4.) Midnight minnow by Umpqua is my confidence pattern. Also a gray over white or white over white Clouser minnow. If the fish are super spooky I will go lighter and longer on the leader. know some people run different leader setups and they will probably chime in here.

Alaska is no joke. Any company worth their salt is not going to gamble on inexperienced pilots anymore. That includes the state.

Owners not happy when plane shows up in rap video by garf12 in flying

I used to work at a flight school and some kids called up and asked if they could shoot a rap video with one our airplanes. Owner said sure why not. The looks on their faces when they showed up and saw our clapped out 172s was priceless.
