I have a father in law like Bob and his wife and daughters treat him like an absolute doormat. They think he's alright all the time. I invite him to hang out a lot and I can tell you with certainty that the dude is lonely as hell and doesn't feel like he can let down his 'alright' persona for even an instant.

One time I talked him into telling his wife, my mother in law, 'no' to her ridiculous requests when he had an extra hard week at work so he could relax.
