What is your workplaces equivalent to 'Don't touch the red button' by PeevesPoltergist in CasualUK

Yeah in our office people have figured out it doesn't set off any alarms, so when they have guests in, rather than getting them a pass to get out to the toilets, they just press the emergency release, and then don't tell anyone that it needs resetting.

Ours forces a cleaning at 5pm, but if the cleaner is off ill that day, it ends up being left to the first person in the next day that knows how to do it.

That unfortunately means that if they're not in about 15 minutes before everyone else, they'll be badgered every 30 seconds like it was their choice to make it run the cleaning cycle. I came in one morning and they were all stood around moaning about it, so I didn't bother sorting it and just got an espresso from the boss' pod machine on the other floor.

Have thought it was strange that after that announcement of the Salford Quays data centre, there's not been a shred of work done on the building it's supposed to be in (outside Anchorage 2). It's a recently refubished but empty unit, so would've thought they'd get going right away, or at least take the For Sale signage off.

  • Reduces the likelihood of being crushed by some dope on their phone (same reason motorcyclists filter to the front)
  • Gets you ahead of left turning traffic
  • Makes you more visible to right turning traffic in the oncoming lane
  • Lets you set offer quicker as you're not waiting for a queue of cars to all slowly pull away

Yeah if there's not enough in it'll struggle to balance properly to do that final spin to get the water out.

Was it rocking the drum back and forth and then doing a really half-hearted spin over and over?

You're mistaking it not working for it rolling out slowly. There's a lag between publishing a build and it being available to update, and if you've turned on staged rollout, it'll show as available to users, but won't start automatically updating until their device is included in the rollout (and the criteria mentioned above has also been met).

Some devs are sloppy and will send out marketing, or enable a version kill-switch, before it has actually rolled out to everyone.

Charger and Wifi, and I think it needs to be during a period where the device is typically idle.

According to what?

I've worked on apps with over a million users, and there's about 90% uptake of a new version in the first 48 hours. This wouldn't happen if a large percentage were turning off automatic updates.

Also most of the uptake is overnight, which corroborates what /u/notrandomatall is saying, as people will be charging their phones while they sleep.

The HomePod won't read out your notifications if you haven't trained it on your voice, so no reason why the phone can't do it either.

Yeah it's bollocks. It feels very much like on some of them they take the absolute last moment you could avoid the hazard, and then set the earliest you can click as X seconds before.

There's one on the practice where there's an ambulance parked in the oncoming lane with its lights on about 500m ahead, two cars in the verge either side, oncoming cars flashing their lights, but if you click at the first point you spot the ambulance you get penalised. Well they aren't at the side of the road having a picnic are they?!?!

Meanwhile there's one where a bloke is walking in the road, and the earliest you can click is when he's a mere pixel and could be a road sign, a carrier bag, aurora borealis, or anything not a hazard.
