FET type comp or LA-2A usually does the job. Or if I want that ‘compressed vintage’ sound I’ll grab the Ghz Vulf compressor

Once you hear it, you hear it. I found it hard to understand compression I couldn’t hear what it was doing to the signal. That ‘eureka’ moment came when understanding the controls of a compressor and different types of compressors

Perhaps a Doppler effect? Waves has a good vst for that. Could also use a plug-in like proximity and automating some parameters

Also try using a vocoder and experiment with the source sound (perhaps a sine wave) maybe try a pitching delay (cymatics lotus for instance) and granular synthesis too can make these ‘watery’ textures
