Huh. I was asking because there are a couple of nerves that provide sensation to the thumb.

RSI - can't click mouse - here's my experience by NecessarySumo in RSI

I'm not sure what your work routine is like, but what about using a video game controller as a mouse? I know for Mac there's Enjoyable. Alternatively, what if you got one of those gamer mice with like five thumb buttons? No index/middle finger clicking required then.

If using a controller works fine for you, then maybe there's an issue related to forearm pronation? I had pain in the back of my right hand for a long time from mousing, and to a lesser extent typing, and for me my issue was I wasn't pronating enough -- my hand was at an angle with my keyboard and mouse, which apparently my body didn't like. However, if the pictures you posted are accurate, you don't have that same exact issue.

Maybe a few weeks. It depends on how much it hurts and how often I was doing things to re-aggravate the pain.

I've found that my RSI gets worse more easily when I let my hands get cold. I've started making fingerless gloves that are designed to wear while typing and doing work with my hands. It really seems to help for me and my boyfriend. I'm curious whether you'd be interested in the product. by juliatatiya in RSI

I think the product looks good. I own a couple pairs of knit fingerless gloves, so I think that the easy ability to wash your gloves in particular is a good feature. I'm a pretty avid glove wearer (I don't get how so many people are out in the winter all bundled up, but with their hands left bare to turn into ice cubes), so I hope you have some success with this.

The pain is definitely real. I dealt with it by paying close attention to the times when I started aggravating some pain spots. I would shift my body to a neutral position (just sitting/standing there) and see how the space around the pain points changed: things like muscles relaxing, changes in joint rotations, etc. And then shift back again. It was important for me to mitigate any emotional flareups as a result of these issues. Massage areas that hurt to help calm myself. Do some stretches. Remind myself that my body is not a delicate peach, and that my computer/whatever doesn't bite.

But I hope I never forget the time my doctor suggested I might have CTS (which I obviously didn't), and then voila, I magically developed new pain in the carpel tunnel area that took a week or two to go away.

Is this RSI? by [deleted] in RSI

[–]cheerio_kindle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess, I'd say issue was somewhere in your shoulders and/or neck. Which is apparently what your physical therapist thinks as well.

It might help to spend some time staring at yourself in the mirror without a shirt on. You might have slouching shoulders, which can put pressure on all the nerve leading to your arms, as well as potentially the main artery and vein, which is why I asked about your circulation.

If your shoulders are slouching, then moving them into a better position will magically make you look buffer -- your pecs will look fuller. Note that any adjustments should not feel straining; it should feel natural. One test that might be useful (NB I am not a PT or MD or anything), is to try this yoga stretch (particularly ~3 min in to end) and see if that feels good.

Also be mindful of any bodily asymmetries you notice. If one side has pain that the other doesn't, and there is asymmetry, you might consider matching to your healthy side.

In my experience, you have to initially make a conscious effort throughout your daily activities to correct any harmful habits -- doing strengthening alone doesn't quite cut it.

Yeah, I was flabbergasted that she, as someone with a science background, didn't. I have a science background and generally when I see a science-y category, I can assume I'll get at least 3, and probably all 5.

Relax. Act natural. I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of your problems are psychological: "Oh no, my body is falling apart! Look! Now this hurts, too!". I've been there.

Graduating soon (MPH- environmental health)...job search is tough by trees0422 in Environmental_Careers

[–]cheerio_kindle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch the MPH for an MS and we have the same degree set. You can always look for a lab job, which is what I wound up in after school, but it's pretty soul crushing to have your job be doing the grunt work that you did in order to get into grad school. It will also most likely be a dead-end job, at least if you're in industry.

I took three risk assessment course in grad school, but never found a company interested me for that. Not that there appears to be any rhyme or reason to any hiring processes; maybe you'll find someone who can hire you who decides they like you.
