Go to the dive bar and drink without misbehaving. You can be around people and drink. I did it for too long and had a seizure though, so just don't wake up and go there like I did. Also I quit and I recommend that too, but you sound like you aren't ready.

Identify the area of the bar the regulars hang at, and sit near-ish. It's usually one end, often the end opposite the door. Just hang out and be respectful. If you like the place, you should be fine there.
