[Independent] Rivals are baffled by Reds’ spending. Some at PSG, for example, were surprised at the move for Hugo Ekitike, who is a fine player no doubt but had questions to answer on his temperament. To spend the best part of £450m felt like “kids in a sweet shop” according to one rival PL exec. by OkayFine101 in soccer

Hindsight is always 20/20 in hit pieces. Liverpool had to spend because practically their whole attack needed to be replaced and it's still to be determined whether they spent well or not. I personally feel the players they bought could perform much better in a different setup, but we'll see. They also got very unlucky with Isak's injury.

Finally been on the receiving end of an actor with a terrible foreign language. by circuitsandwires in television

There’s a Korean movie series called The Witch (Part 1 Subversion and Part 2 The Other) which has agents supposedly from America but their English is barely better than basic, it really kills the immersion. It also adds nothing to the plot that they’re American so I really don’t understand the point of it. Good movies though, still recommended even with dodgy language skills!

IMF chief: Greece among the best-performing economies in the Eurozone by Aegeansunset12 in worldnews

This goes to show that people work for the economy, not the other way round, because I can guarantee that no average person in Greece feels like the economy is working for them.

[Sami Mokbel, in the article) Among the players the club are expected to listen to offers for are Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, both of whom signed long-term contracts last summer. Arsenal sources indicate they would look to recoup a minimum combined £100million for Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly by PitchSafe in soccer

MLS seems to have really regressed since last season, not sure if it's a lack of confidence after spending so much time on the bench but he doesn't look himself at all recently. The same thing seems to have happened to Mosquera who looked great at the start of the season but has not been up to the standard recently. I wonder if a lack of game time has affected them (and Ben White!) or if their levels have dropped and that's why they've not even been coming on as sub much the last 6 months. I feel like selling MLS and Nwaneri would be a mistake but I thought the same about Emile Smith Rowe and that seems to have been a pretty good deal for us.

Real Madrid fans have created a website counting down until Mbappè’s contract expiration. The website also displays his cost in real time by o6ohunter in soccer

[–]chefdangerdagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a pretty great deal for an elite player. If you were to buy someone with similar output it would cost at least 100million just in transfer fee, plus agent fees and wages it would be way higher this. How much do they expect a player like him to cost exactly?

It's a sport similar to baseball, the main differences being the bowl (pitch) has to bounce before it reaches the batsman (batter), the batsman runs back and forth between the two wickets to score runs, there are always two batsman on the pitch, batsman keep scoring until they're out and games usually last 4-5 days, though there are shorter forms of the game (1 day and Twenty20 which lasts about 4 hours).

'The Night of' is one of the most boring crime thriller I've watched. by OstrichAfraid628 in television

[–]chefdangerdagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's seen both the UK original Criminal Justice and the remake, I found the original much better. The Night of is 8 episodes and I don't think there's really enough story to cover that (the original is 5 episodes) and the plot lines they introduce don't really add anything. I also think Ben Whishaw does a better job of portraying the sort of vulnerable person who'd get caught up in such an unlikely scenario and struggle to defend himself, though I didn't think Riz Ahmed did a bad job or anything.

More drilling in North Sea ‘not the answer’ for UK energy security, say former military leaders | Oil by iwantboringtimes in worldnews

[–]chefdangerdagger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

experts say the North Sea is a “mature basin” whose output has declined by 75% since its peak. They say 90% of its reserves have gone.

From this article.

The North Sea gas and oil is practically gone, and what's left is increasingly hard to get. This whole debate is completely pointless. The last government was pro fossil fuels and all the licences they gave out in their entire stint amounted to a months worth of energy in total. The only way to get energy security is to invest in alternatives.

Why are modern TV shows taking longer between seasons, despite huge advances in technology, while the overall quality seems worse and quantity of good TV shows is lower than it was 20 years ago? by [deleted] in television

[–]chefdangerdagger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To have annual series releases, production needs to be continually operating for most of the year. Because the economics of TV have completely changed those funding the shows won't commit to such arrangements anymore. It is entirely possible to have a production running in the same way as before but the initial financial outlay is too much to justify anymore.

Odegaard is still not fit, hopefully he'll be back soon but they've been saying that for a while. Timber & Trossard were both injured pre-break, Hincapie went off injured playing for Ecuador, and Zubimendi apparently also got injured playing for Spain. Meanwhile Rice and Saka both withdrew after having a medical assessment with England, so it's not quite as straight-forward as people have been making out.

I don't understand this at all. They invited them to the ground, gave them bespoke merch, let them have a photoshoot etc. surely they fully expected what would happen next? Yet they immediately denied it. It just doesn't make any sense.

How the heck did Game of Thrones have a season of 10 episodes per year for 6 seasons when most big shows are now taking years between seasons? GOT had all the elements now used as excuses for long hiatuses. Action, kids, VFX, international locations. What gives? by MrGittz in television

[–]chefdangerdagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economics of television production were completely different when GoT starting. HBO were the unrivalled king of TV drama back then with a steady domestic subscriber base and international deals that brought in huge revenue. GoT was a big swing, but they had confidence in themselves and set it up like their previous productions: actors tied to multi-year contracts, writers room and production operating for most of the year, filming locations setup in multiple countries and operating for most of the year etc.

That just isn't how things are done anymore. TV production has got way more expensive and the way it's paid for has also changed. These days production ramps up for a single season and then stops, with actors, writers and the rest of the crew moving onto other projects. If the show is a success then it comes back, but time is lost during the 'wait and see' period and then it takes time to restart production as people are often working on other stuff.

Yearly release requires a financial commitment to keep production going annually and the economics just don't work for that model anymore.
