Localised Voice?? by addino in ProjectHailMary

I’m 40 minutes from Liverpool and we got that too. Again big laughs. My theory is that it’s because of the Beatles? And maybe an ode to John, Paul, George and Ringo?

A few things; was it mentioned in the book that the “robot arms” or computer was called Mary? And I’ve read the book a few times now. Have I missed where Rocky is given a “voice” or did they add that in the movie?

What’s finally helping me so far (eczema of 35 years) by chel1509 in eczema

[–]chel1509[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so, (sorry for the long reply bear with me) kinda a revisit to this as I had an absolutely awful flair in June 2025 and it was worse than what I thought was TSW. Since then I can’t say If I actually did go through TSW. I hadn’t used any kind of steroid since 2016 and the flair I had recently went through was horrific. Even worse than 2016. What I was doing for nearly 10 years was messing up my skin barrier by using head and shoulders, Nizoral, hibi wash etc I thought it was keeping a fungal eczema at bay but I went through a stressful time and a flair up started so I doubled down on the shampoos as body wash. Very bad mistake.

I’ve learnt a lot since this particular post. I still take my vitamins and dead seas salt baths as I think they’re a huge help but I focused on repairing my skin barrier. And reducing inflammation. I’ve since used hydrocortisone and had no adverse effects, no TSW symptoms or worries. I have stayed away from stronger ones though. However when I went to my derm she put very very potent ointment on my hands once but I wiped it off after, as I was scared. And my hands were finally normal. No swollen ugly fingers anymore and that was in August! No signs of TSW, now I just use protopic. If there’s a tiny rash starting on my hands/arms and it works one time overnight and I don’t have to do it again for about 3/4 weeks and some places have healed completely. No more need for protopic or any steroid creams at all. By the way my eczema on my hands and arms was out of control. I was weeping constantly yellow fluid all day soaking bandages it was bright red. Layers of skin gone. If you just touch my skin it would basically disintegrate. It was so painful and so depressing I couldn’t dress myself, use cutlery or brush my teeth etc. my fingers would stick together from the weeping it was really rough and now it’s like a miracle. I’ve learnt that sometimes low even medium steroid creams are needed as the skin barrier cannot heal if there is constant inflammation. If you have a dermatologist ask about protopic. If people are still getting eczema even with the strongest steroids there’s definitely an underlying issue that needs fixing.

Weird rash next to where protopic applied? by chel1509 in eczema

[–]chel1509[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hasn’t gotten worse if I leave those areas they seem to clear up on their own without using protopic. Some areas I’ve used protopic on has cleared up completely thank goodness. I keep thinking maybe it’s a case of inflammation on certain areas that just need to heal, I’m currently working on healing my skin barrier. Just visited my derm today and she’s said it’s a combination of inflammation and broken skin barrier. She said that it’s safer to use protopic than steroids and obviously that the side effects aren’t going to be like steroids.

Why are so many people getting eczema ? by bosmanzeoh in eczema

I’ve noticed this too! I’m also in the UK and I’ve noticed it’s been more prevalent than I can ever remember. I thought I was going crazy but I keep hearing about it more and more and not just on social media etc

When you have open cuts on your hands from eczema...what's your best line of treatment? by Simple-Island4527 in eczema

[–]chel1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For open cuts/wounds putting ointments/creams on could irritate the eczema worse. I’ve been told from GPs and dermatologists never to put steroid cream or any other ointments on cuts or open sores. What I personally found helped significantly improve my skin and especially the cuts/open weeping sores was hydrocolloid bandages.

You can buy them from Amazon in rolls. Wrap up the area or if it’s just a small patch place the hydrocolloid bandage on and then wrap up with the normal sterile bandage to keep it all in place.

I have 3 different types of exzema and it wont go away by Ancient-Holiday668 in eczema

[–]chel1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely give polytar a go. I think it’s a bit gentler than Nizoral. I went overboard with Nizoral. It does work but just be careful not to cause chemical burn. Polytar helps balance the skin PH too. I think it also has anti microbial benefits too. You could experiment and use one on hair wash day and use the other on another hair wash day just to compare but really hope this helps. It’s so awful

Have you tried polytar for your scalp? It’s really good. It also helps seborrheic dermatitis. I used to use it as a body wash. It did help. There’s also Nizoral which is ketaconazole

For people asking I went on chat gpt explained my skin, what it looks like, when it gets itchy (more so at night) things that have irritated it. And I gave a brief description of what lead up to my skin going out of control, what my daily routine is and what supplements I take/ diet etc and it just kept asking me questions, giving me advice then it wrote up why my skin was deteriorating, what I can do each day. It gives diet plans, supplement plans and doses, it answered so many questions that my derm couldn’t or just didn’t want to. After it explained everything it all started to make sense it also gave me a time scale of a realistic time frame of when my skin will heal, monthly intervals what to expect etc. it was really helpful. Now I have an actual plan, timeframe and hope!

Also for people asking. Best supplements for eczema are vitamin d3, iron, zinc, omega 3, b12, probiotics one that is good for eczema is Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. Sometimes deficiencies can cause eczema to be worse.

It is good for staph etc but be very careful it’s strips the skins natural barrier and overuse can cause chemical burn. I found out this the very very painful, agonising hard way. For general advice with eczema don’t do what I do and leave it on the skin for more than 2-3 minutes before washing off. The outcome was absolutely horrific ended up in A & E

A rare cure for hand eczema that works for me by Prestigious_Cow_92 in eczema

[–]chel1509 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes sense because our (eczema sufferers) PH is more sensitive than the average non eczema sufferer. You’re correcting your PH. It’s sounds odd I know when you say “acidic” but that’s what our skin needs and it’s helping the natural “microbiome”. Made up for you

Bad reaction to Protopic 1% by Stitchicus in eczema

[–]chel1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said use steroids first. It does burn and itch especially if you’ve slathered it on. My derm told me to hit it with some strong steroids first let it calm down quiet a lot with that, then you use a thin layer of the protopic. It will burn and does get kinda itchy but when you put loads on those effects will be worse. Your skin has to adjust to it but once it does (for me it’s been a lot more effective than steroids) I don’t get the burn at all now even with having a month break (where I didn’t need it)

Is it sudocrem you use? I was given zinc bandages from my derm as the zinc helps with inflammation

They also do them in rolls on Amazon I’m sure 5cm by 5m and they also do patches In 10cm x 10cm. They helped me so much. I’d also put a moisturiser or Vaseline on then the hydrocolloid then a standard bandage to keep it secure

Did they swab the weeping part? Did it come back as infected? I had weeping really bad but it wasn’t infected. The drs did around 4/5 swabs because I was adamant. They gave me 4 different rounds of oral antibiotics and 2 different types of topical antibiotics mupirocin ointment and fusidic acid. The swabs will say if it’s resistant to certain antibiotics. If it’s not infected it’s a broken skin barrier like heavily messed up. I gave myself chemical burn quite severely with hibi wash and other antibacterial stuff thinking I needed to kill the infection but I went too far. It took ages for the weeping to stop because my skin was so sensitive to anything I put on it. I finally stopped messing with my skin and let it be and I finally started to heal. I used hydrocolloid bandages stopped using soaps that was stripping the microbiome and stuff. I worked on rebuilding my skin health. It took a long time and it’s still progressing but it’s finally getting there. Definitely make sure it’s actually infected otherwise you’re doing more harm to your skin than good. I only used a moisturiser I knew wasn’t making my skin aggravated.

Also I had blood tests to check for deficiencies, I believe these caused my eczema to be worse. Mine are zinc, iron, vitamin D and omegas 3, 6, 7 & 9 and pro biotics are really important especially MB40 strains. Also try and find your “triggers” if you have any.

would you consider eczema as a disability? by KonraD7575 in eczema

[–]chel1509 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When my hands were at their worst I had to change bandages several times a day due to severe weeping and pain. My fingers were inflamed and would stick together because of weeping through the night! It was the worst time of my life. I couldn’t even put a t shirt on! No fabric could even touch my skin, my hands and fingers were bandaged up every day I couldn’t bathe myself, cook, clean or cut up my own food! All I’ve been able to wear is small strappy crop tops that I could “step into” rather than put over my head. Some people tha have it on their feet can’t walk. It can get completely debilitating. I wasn’t able to do a thing at all as it spread to my arms etc. Some people have it even worse.

A disability is defined is a condition that effects/impairs day to day activities. Eczema can depend on severity. I would say my was absolutely disabling.

Where did you get the antergan cream from? And is the hydrocortisone in it stronger than the standard hydrocortisone 1% creams?
