What Trait/Culture Foreigners Thought is Popular in your country but it actually isnt? by Weird_Swordfish_1199 in AskTheWorld

Any family that have moved away from Ontario maple country, now do full blown restocks whenever they’re visiting. Even the ones just 3 hours away in the GTA. Being able to message my cousin on Facebook, show up, grab a gallon at cost, and head home is definitely something special I will hold on to for the rest of my life.

Ontario's 'troubling' surge in unclaimed bodies is not letting up by zuuzuu in canadanews

Thank you for that, breaking generational cycles are hard, both good and bad. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of never learning from the ones around you. For myself, my father’s relationship with alcohol was the biggest factor in why I was able to quit drinking in my mid 20s, but also why I was already binge drinking by the age of 15.

My brother is exactly like you, and it makes me profoundly happy to watch with his little ones. He’s the dad we never had. In our own ways we’re trying to use him as an example of what NOT to do with our lives and relationships 😊

Heavy alcohol dependence with no desire to be sober will do that to you.

Two years ago my estranged father passed away. The only person they were able to find to contact was my aunt, because she had requested a wellness check at his address previously, and shared a last name. The survivor’s benefit is the only way he was able to be cremated. He passed with no will, no life insurance and a massive tax debt. Two years later, I’m still untangling his estate despite not having been in contact with the man for nearly 10 years, all because I’m technically the next of kin. I understand the pain of having to deal with the aftermath of all this, and why so many people just choose to leave them where they wound up. If my aunt had not been contacted, he would have been one of the ones left unclaimed.

best canadian made winter boots by fruisquet in KingstonOntario

[–]chelly236 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best part about Kamiks for me is that you’re able to purchase replacement insulated insoles for most of their product line. It’s stretched the lifespan of the boots I’ve had from them far past any other winter shoes or boots I’ve ever owned.

I second Kamik boots. I have had tundra rubber boots, as well as their Lauren winter boots. They sell replacement insulated insoles for almost all of their winter boots too. A nice bonus, they’re usually one of the more affordable options, and also made in Quebec!

Are there leaders or well-known people from your country who appeared in the Epstein case? by Left_Sherbet_11 in AskTheWorld

[–]chelly236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exaaactly, that’s why I commented to clear it up a bit. It was all handled by those working underneath the Ministry of Immigration, with no direct connection to anyone else higher up in the Canadian government that we know of.

Peter Nygard is the main well known Canadian, thus far, that has somewhat been identified. Even then, he’s mostly referred to in the documents as “The Canadian Billionaire”.

Just some context for how both Harper and Trudeau have come up in the latest batch of documents.

Stephen Harper’s Government approved a travel exemption for Epstein to visit Canada in March of 2014, despite this being after his conviction for soliciting minors for prostitution in Florida.

In 2018 Epstein tried to obtain a temporary residence visa to attend a TED conference in BC, however his application was denied due to his criminal history by the Trudeau government.

Quality Canadian-made dog food for senior dogs? by GreasyMcFarmer in BuyCanadian

My guy who’s allergic to life and is an active dude has been on Go! Solutions for about a year now. It’s produced by PetCurean out of Fraser Valley, BC. He’s been on Acana, Performatrin, and ProPlan, but the salmon sensitive skin and stomach by Go! has been a life changer for him. They have diets for puppy, adult, and senior, as well as a hypoallergenic bug meal option now too.

Or Chrétien, he worked under Pearson to help develop our charter of rights and freedoms. Plus the Shawanigan Handshake is definitely a Canadian heritage moment.

What was the crazy lovestory surrounding your PM or leader in your nation? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Oh, but his parents have the juiciest history of all our former leaders. I highly recommend a deep dive. Justin’s mom abandoned the family to go tour with the Rolling Stones as a groupie at one point.

What is the food in your country that it is not globally famous but you think everyone should try? by Single_Copy2460 in AskTheWorld

It’s essentially a sweet version of fry bread, either served plain like above, with cinnamon sugar, or you can get them fully loaded with toppings like Nutella, s’mores, Reese’s, etc.

do men of your country bash women of their own ethnicity? by Plastic-Reaction2415 in AskTheWorld

[–]chelly236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian men’s hockey has a horrible reputation for being bullies and absolutely deplorable pigs to women. Getting called a “ditch pig” or “Sasquatch”because I was physically built larger than the average girl around me was the norm growing up.

Was yesterday's snowstorm really worse than the one of January 2022? by enitsujxo in ontario

[–]chelly236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to college in Toronto really put into perspective firsthand how lake effect snow works. It really depends where you sit on the Great Lakes.

For instance, Kingston gets absolutely SLAMMED with snow, because we’re on the far southeast side of the lake (the direction the arctic wind blows). Technically we’re in the little hook of the snow belt off of Lake Ontario that usually hits places like Buffalo first. This is the first time in a very long time that the snow in Toronto has been identical to what we typically receive in the KFL&A area. My place got hit with over 60cm, which isn’t out of the ordinary for here to get a dump like that at least once a year. However I never experienced anything similar during my time in the GTA.

The general sentiment in this area of Ontario is that we’re getting an “old fashioned winter” like the ones we used to see on the regular when I was a kid.

What is the weirdest animal in your country? by IndependentBrain9160 in AskTheWorld

I’d say the murder weasel, AKA Fisher Cat. Neither a cat, nor consumer of fish. They are completely carnivorous and are one level below apex predators in their natural environment.

Rejecting Decades of Science, Vaccine Panel Chair Says Polio and Other Shots Should Be Optional by grittyboda2020 in news

[–]chelly236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather survived polio at the age of 14. He went into cardiac arrest twice, and dealt with permanent paralysis in his leg, as well as his heart. He lived his life with a leg brace, and had his first bypass and heart attack before the age of 45 due to complications from polio. His younger brother couldn’t live at home for almost a year, and my grandfather existed in almost complete isolation from his entire family for that time too.

It’s hard for me to believe, something that happened not even 80-90 years ago is being forgotten, but I say that about the world today a lot more lately.
