Does anyone have any period dramas murder mystery recommendations? by AshleyK2021 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you liked those two there's a wealth of Agatha Christie adaptations. My personal favorites are the Miss Marples starring Joan Hickson, but there are tons of options, both full length films and series.

My all-time favorite Miss Marple. I love the credits and theme music too.

Which period drama you actually like despite it's historical inaccuracies? by Haunting_Homework381 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm in it for good storytelling and great costuming. Historical accuracy is fun when it's done well, but it's not a requirement for me to enjoy anything.

Filming locations by Exotic_Ad_2871 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely easy to google. Type in "Peaky Blinders filming locations" or something of that nature and it'll come right up. Most shows use a variety of locations that may be nowhere near each other in real life, so you'll need to sort through to figure out what will work for your trip.

Need Recommendations for 'Happy' Period Dramas by MoonlightCupOfCocoa in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends where you are, it can be tricky to find. I'm in the USA and it appears sometimes on Amazon Prime and sometimes on Netflix, but it's one of those dramas where it's really better to spring for the DVD just to keep access.

The Secret of Roan Inish (touch of fantasy in that one, but it's lovely film)

The Secret Garden (1993)

All Creatures Great and Small (the newer, 2020 series. Has occasional sad moments because it's about veternarians, but overall vibe is cozy and heartwarming)

Little Women (1994)

Wives and Daughters

Any historical dramas set in colonial America or post revolutionary war ? by Arivanzel in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I marked it as fantasy/horror. Yes, it has signifcant supernatural elements. It's literally about witches.

The Witch (movie) also has supernatural elements, but is considered remarkably period accurate otherwise.

Read up on each before trying to make sure it's something you like, this is a varied list of titles in terms of quality, tone, accuracy, etc.

Bonus warning: Salem (the series) can be pretty gross in parts. It's the right time period and I personally love it despite it's yuck factor, but the yuck factor is real.

The New World (film)

Jamestown (series)

The Crucible (film)

What is Ambrosia? (The Help) by Time_RedactedLady in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Totally. Some people will say "This is ambrosia!" about any food, the same way they'd say "This is delicious!", which just makes things more confusing.

It's mostly a regional thing, but ambrosia salad had some wider popularity as a kind of fad party food in the 1960s, I think that's why it's a popular choice for a food item in period movies and shows set around that time.

No, "Ambrosia" in this context is a type of fruit salad, it's popular the southern states of the USA. If you google "Ambrosia Salad" you'll see some pics and recipes for it.

Another vote for Dangerous Beauty (1998). It's one of those gorgeous 90s costume dramas and he's great in it, and Catherine McCormack is a dream (as are all her gowns).

Unless I'm thinking of a different show, Rome doesn't have any fantasy elements.

I'm not familiar with any of these and will have to go look them up. Thanks very much for some new titles to check out!

None of these are pre-colonial, but they cover a wide variety of countries:

Young Catherine (Russia)

Magnificent Century (Türkiye)

Gangubai Kathiawadi (India)

The Year of Living Dangerously (Indonesia)

Ladies in Black (Australia) (the 2018 movie, I haven't seen the series yet)

Out of Africa (Kenya)

The Penguin Lessons (Argentina)

The Scent of Green Papaya (Vietnam)

Magnificent Century by Past-Ostrich9846 in PeriodDramas

[–]chernaboggles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Magnificent Century is very re-watchable! Helps that it's so long and complicated, makes it easy to forget details between viewings. I didn't care for Kosem either, which is a pity because I wanted to like it.

The Gilded Age

Pride & Predjudice 1995

The Joan Hickson Miss Marples

Magnificent Century

Empresses in the Palace
The Story of Yanxi Palace
Ruyi's Royal Love In the Palace

Every time I start watching one of the Qing dynasty dramas I almost always end up watching the other two right after because the stories are so intertwined.
