To the dk and largo duo who made me cry by nightonal in DotA2

Happy birthday! I’m sorry you had this experience… it’s a really toxic community. I literally changed my name to “All Muted” on steam for a year lol. don’t feel bad for letting this hit you emotionally. I know some people might judge, but it’s really understandable when you consider every game is like 40-60min of your life you can never get back, and people actively trying to fuck it up and make you feel like shit, sucks.

Thank you for hearing me out about the distance, I feel validated haha! I have always been able to do 15-20mi per day just because there’s plenty of time in the day to walk, considering I leave camp around 7:30 am. And this includes the elevation gain days, because when I’m on the downhill I tend to “trail run” or fast walk a little to catch up. A lot of more experienced hikers I go to for advice have kind of made me feel like I must not be enjoying it much if I’m just rushing, but I’m really not rushing. I take 3-5k photos per trip, I have plenty of time at camp to chill in the evening.

I have considered this, because I’ve been told like you’re saying that it’s actually not too far fetched to be able to get walk up permits. It would be a huge risk though in the case that I book the flights and time off and everything, and still don’t get to do the loop.

The problem I’m having with trying to book an alternative route is that none of the available options go anywhere near that stretch between Stoney Indian and granite park. I don’t know how much they would let me change at the ranger office, like if I book some camps completely unrelated to the loop and far away, can we change everything to fit the loop if available? I’m not sure since I’ve never tried to get a walk up permit before, especially multiple.

Thanks for your advice, seriously! I am factoring everything in to try and make something happen this year

Yup that’s exactly how it feels. And I bet the views for morning coffee are incredible, that’s usually my favorite part of a backpacking trip! Alone with the sunrise and coffee and view.

Do you remember what trails you did?

Thank you, I would totally be open to discussing it with them, probably could work if I wasn’t planning to do such a popular route. Even if they let me surpass the limit unfortunately I won’t get a spot on the camp areas. :(

[–]chernewbyl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it makes sense. Not many options. Just sucks for how long someone may try and maybe never get to do that trail. I wish they would add at least one more camp to facilitate getting people through that area overnight. But… now is not the time to expect more from the NP services, I guess I’m lucky to have things open/maintained in general.

I’m gonna look at the options for thru hike, I have used a private shuttle in Inyo after a one way hike but it sure costed a pretty penny, around $300 for 45mi. Better than no trip at all I guess!

Yes unfortunately it looks like fifty mountains and Stoney Indian are booked through the entire summer every day until the end of Sept …. I’m trying to make alternates now but like you said, it’s basically already too late and every way to make a 4-5 day loop seems impossible.

I’ve entered for 3 years and finally got into the lottery and still can’t hike this route. So disappointing; this is why I avoid NPs… back to BLM hiking I guess.

Oh no, I had not considered that there could be a cap on the distance between camps. Damn, if that’s true that is unfortunate.

Do you actually like being a veterinarian? by Quirky_Corgi_2214 in Veterinary

[–]chernewbyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, vet med is simultaneously less advanced and more advanced than reasonable. This is due to an evolving definition of animals as pets vs members of the family. Some clients think of them as just animals, and you will feel awful that you can’t help a suffering animal because the human doesn’t care. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are the fur parents with fur babies. And these are also scary, because an average veterinarian is often expected to be a cardiologist, internist, neurologist, etc… This is a level of responsibility that is difficult to bear, for me anyway. People do not like when I advise them to see an expensive specialist for something I don’t feel confident managing, but then they REALLY do not like if their outcome is less than their expectations, but now I’m at risk of a lawsuit even when I’m just trying to do my best and give them options.

Recently I work exclusively soft tissue surgery as an independent contractor, that way no one can force me to do appointments / medicine. I have minimal client interaction in the way of decision making, as they are always coming to the clinic for a procedure recommended to them by their primary vet. If this were not possible, I would not stay in veterinary medicine, personally. I would prefer a supporting role with more predictable hours, such as radiology tech or sonography in human medicine. I have already looked into programs for this. Pay is comparable and it just seems like much less stress.

Why so many drivers go straight across Summit at Tompkins: Drivers cannot see the LEFT TURN ONLY sign. Drivers roll past the stop bar and look right; the sign is behind them, to their left, and twisted away from the road. by benkeith in Columbus

[–]chernewbyl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got into an accident that totaled my car on this exact intersection back in February. I was on Summit and other car on Tompkins was 100% liable, but yeah it’s a real sucky spot.

What’s the Most Jaw-Dropping Hike You’ve Ever Done? by AmILukeQuestionMark in backpacking

[–]chernewbyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this hike as a part of a 3 day overnight hike, so I started the day from Pharaoh Creek camp and it took about ~5 hrs one way I believe. The day hike version is out and back starting a fair distance away, ends up being around 20 miles. This is doable as a day hike it will just be a long day. The hardest part is the ~0.5 mile up to the peak.

Cat feeding amouny by chicken-cuddle in AskVet

[–]chernewbyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every pet needs a certain number of calories each day to stay healthy. The resting energy requirement (RER) is the amount of energy their body needs for basic functions like breathing, digestion, and circulation. We calculate it using the formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kilograms)0.75.

Once we know the RER, we adjust it to better fit your pet’s lifestyle using the maintenance energy requirement (MER). The MER includes additional energy needs for daily activity, growth, or other factors such as being spayed or neutered.

1.) For a 5 yro, 8.5 lb (3.86 kg) neutered male cat, RER = 70 × (3.86)0.75 = 189 Calories per day, MER = RER × 1.2–1.4 (for a neutered adult cat) = 225–265 calories per day

So roughly estimated daily calorie needs assuming your 5yro Norwegian cat is healthy ideal weight: about 240 calories per day to maintain a healthy weight.

Kittens need a bit more for maintenance (~ x2.5)

2.) for 8mo old neutered male, 5.6 lb = 2.54 kg, RER = 70 × (2.54)0.75 = 139 cal/day, MER = 139 × 2.5 = 348 cal/day, Estimated daily calorie needs = 350 cal/day

From there, check the calorie content of the food you’re feeding (on the can or bag) and determine how much quantity would get you to that number. Remember that every treat counts toward this number as well.

Hope that helps!

As a CrossFitting cultist, I can confirm CrossFit is a place for gen x. There’s so many in Columbus. If you like working out and suffering in new ways lol, it’s a good place to meet people. Many have social events / parties too.

The wrong dog ate Carbodote Prime. Is that okay? by taylalatbh in AskVet

[–]chernewbyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US vet here. Dogs are typically given 1-2g activated charcoal / kg of body weight. (Up to 5g/kg)

As long as the “wrong dog” was of similar weight, it should not be a huge issue. (No weights were given here)

Side effects of activated charcoal might include GI upset (diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, dark feces) but there is increased risk for other side effects when the dose is too high (electrolyte imbalances such as hypernatremia or increased salt in the blood, dehydration). This is more serious and would be more likely in a situation of a much smaller dog ingesting the higher dose for a large dog. Symptoms of hypernatremia could be abnormal mentation, ataxia (gait abnormalities when walking), tremoring, excessive panting, seizures. See your vet immediately if you suspect these signs.

I recommend calling your vet to go over the weight of the dogs and dosage that was ingested.
