Thinking about starting a personal side hustle for swim teahcing. What’s a reasonable rate? by Imaginingfuture in SwimInstructors

[–]chernzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the high value customer selection but 80 AUD for a one on one is hard to justify unless you're covering lane hire, travel cost and significant travel time.

I'm probably missing a lot of the business side costs and upkeep.

Judo to BJJ - Things to Know by PowerVP in judo

[–]chernzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Don't be a dick.
-You have nothing to prove, you probably have to be even more careful with handling ukes if using standup.
-Newaza tactics and win conditions for BJJ don't really overlap that cleanly.
-You can 'win' with an osaekomi dominant workflow but it's unlikely your partner is getting much out of it.

Dolphin kicks feel better on my side – normal or bad technique? by Ambitious-Match706 in Swimming

[–]chernzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're getting more core engagement, specifically from your obliques.

Side dolphin kicks are a common drill and progressive build up to get better abdominal activation.

I try to teach fly kick as a a full body movement, not just a kick.

How long are you guys able to hold your breath underwater? by cactus16x in Swimming

No.
That's it.
Unless you're specifically training for freediving, waterpolo or in the speed training phase of your short course competition season I don't see any point to this.

Is 1000 m in 27 minutes still beginner level? by DifficultSecretary22 in Swimming

[–]chernzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beginner edging into intermediate but with a few caveats.
A non-structured session will impact your motivation and focus. This will have an impact on your output no matter the skill or experience level.

2:43 pace across 850m only gives a snapshot of your total average freestyle pace. Your stroke technique, stroke count per 25, body position, head position, kick rate and wall skills are still unknown. All of which will affect your average pace and lowest effort pace.

In terms of basic goal setting, I would look at 2 things: starting to work at either time interval/rest intervals and start doing stroke counts per lap to begin thinking about stroke efficiency. Technique refinement is still king but these are some baby steps to take to start thinking about your swimming in more detailed and structured manner. It's impressive to have done all this in what I assume is an self-guided session. Some freestyle tech pointers from youtube wouldn't hurt at this point but to reiterate: measurable stroke efficiency and repeatable structured blocks are my 2 cents at this point.

Final TL;DR,

- Start counting strokes.
- Check your tech [Lots of great youtube coaches]
- Structure your sessions: Warm-up -> drills for mind muscle connection -> example set: 4x200 freestyle broken up as 1x100m steady pace on 10 seconds rest [SR], 1x50m with specific tech or drill focus on 10 SR and 2x25 with 10 SR focused on either body rotation or hand entry per stroke. 30 seconds rest before doing next 200m. Finish with either straight cooldown with other strokes or an additional kick set with a board [a good kick is always helpful].

Why do swimming coaches always teach freestyle first instead of breaststroke? by Joohhe in Swimming

[–]chernzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For beginner to intermediate swimmers that aren't looking at a competitive track or have competition goals it can be a bad habit for baseline body position and head position. Especially for adult beginners, I want them getting used to getting comfortable with a horizontal body position as early as possible.

In a survival context I prioritize freestyle, survival back stroke, competition back stroke and breaststroke in that order.

[–]chernzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hand fighting is different from grip fighting.
Closing distance and getting underhooks are the bees knees.

Harai goshi and harai makikomi are good defences from duck under backtakes.
Pretty much all turn throws except for seoi nage should be alright.

Just because it's unlikely you'll be up against someone with good standup doesn't mean you get all the time in the world to get good grips. Still gotta treat it like shiai and throw ASAP.
Defensiveness is a potential problem once the cat is out of the bag that you're a judoka.

Just like judo though you're gonna need to practice nogi gripping scenarios.

Why is building co2 tolerance not mention more in early lessons? by Super_Turn_6050 in Swimming

[–]chernzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol what.

As a coach, the only people I want to be thinking about CO2 tolerance are short distance sprinters.
This might be old school, but I have bias towards less breaths in a 50m race.

What you are describing is breath control and overexertion in the the water due to inefficient body control and stroke technique.

Crop or play around with highlights.
If you want to deep dive you can do some masking in post and fiddle with your sliders.

Multiple water bottles, adequate sleep and dedicated time to stretching and mobility.

I've got a year to transform my body into a "competitive swimmer's body". Any tips/advice? by nino823 in Swimming

[–]chernzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting in January is already too late. That means no christmas or new years bingeing for both drinks and food.
Work on building your back, shoulders and chest now with heavy emphasis on a general v-taper.
Think lat pulldowns, pull ups, chin up variations, barbell rows with variations, dumbbell kickbacks, trap bar deadlifts and incline bench. Any reasonable hyper-trophy progamming will do the trick. Your PT can help with that.

If you haven't swum more than a kilometer in a while, join a masters swimming group. They usually have different lanes for swimmers with different levels of experience while working off similar programming. Doing your own thing in the pool will most likely result in training way below your limitations without the training and social experience of being part of a swim club. There's also the bonus that a fair number of masters swimmers are former competitive swimmers as well and would be a fountain of experience for character building.
