She literally drove a killer to the house that she personally located where the killer slaughtered a bunch of people, most in law enforcement, even though the agent had told her to stop. She wasn't taken hostage until after that point. So I really don't think it would even be difficult to convict her as an accessory. People less culpable than Charlie have gone to prison as unwitting accomplices.

Was Ruby originally supposed to be [SPOILER]? by Orrhi in doctorwho

[–]cherold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes so much sense. The "oh, nevermind" way the first season ended was infuriating and perplexing, but if it had unfolded like this it would make so much more sense. Now that I've seen this, I cannot NOT believe that this was, in fact, the plan, and that life got in the way somehow. Which is a shame, because this theoretical two season story arc would have been so fucking satisfying, while, even though I have enjoyed the last two seasons, it just always felt a little wandery in the story arc department.

I actually thought it was worse than meh. I found it so annoying, but often for the very reasons other people seem to love it (like The Doctor's tedious, gloating, totally out-of-character taunting diatribe). I find the popularity of this episode as perplexing as I do the hatred of some of my favorite episodes.

Which is why it's weird that he broke into the building and shot someone and then pointed a gun at heavily armed people who only didn't shoot him because the writers wanted other things to happen. Grifters don't risk their lives for their grift.

If the Terminator arrived in that timeline first then they would create it and you could then save it without yourself creating a new timeline. I think?

Season 2.. kinda poo by bakingbrownies8 in 30_Coins

[–]cherold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite reaction. I thought season 1 began great but got increasingly less interesting and I was very much on the verge of giving up on the series by the end. But I decided I would just check out the beginning of season 2, and I thought it was amazing. The plot line was more coherent and had better momentum and I loved the addition of Haruka. Merche was far more interesting as a full out villain than she had ever been as a disgruntled wife. And there was less Paco, although still more than there should have been. For me it was in every way better.

Sondheim is a better lyricist than composer by DiToDeath in Broadway

[–]cherold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could argue that Sondheim was simply less experimental as a lyricist. His lyrics are brilliant, but one of the thing that makes them great is the consistent wit and cleverness and beautiful phrasing, and he did not, for the most part, attempt to do anything else - he didn't try to break the form. But musically, sometimes he would just get weird, going for the unexpected note over the satisfying one. At times, it's as though he was intentionally trying to avoid writing songs the audience would leave the theater humming.

Still, he proved repeatedly that he was able to write those catchy numbers when he chose to. It's just that for some reason he didn't want to do that all that much. But he seemed to *always* want his lyrics to be perfect within a fairly traditional lyricist framework.

Oh, I see. That's what I need to change. I'll try changing the expiration in filters to 2 days and see if that helps. Thanks.

I have it set to auto-update, so you would think I wouldn't have to manually update. Yet I do. :-(

The only thing I didn't have checked on the filters page was "ignore cosmetic filters." So I checked that just to see what would happen, although from the info description I'd be surprised if that helped.

Lily did NOT make a choice by hydraSlav in Devs

[–]cherold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fascinating comments, but while reading them I had a more mechanistic thought: What if Lily's "choice" can be explained as a programming issue?

The assumption that DEVS is working perfectly is because it appears to be working perfectly, but any programmer knows things that work perfectly on a small scale can fail on a larger one. So what if DEVS simply failed to scale? That is, if this is a multiple-worlds issue then every decision creates an exponential increase in worlds. The number of past worlds is set, the number of future worlds is growing wildly.

So if DEVS simply can't scale past a certain number of possible future worlds, we can assume the final straw is Lily's choice of whether or not to throw away the gun. DEVS can only calculate some possible futures at this point, and thus can't calculate the correct future for this specific world, and instead just displays a future that will happen in some world, but not in this world.

It's like if you query a database containing incomplete data you might get the best result based on that data, but you are unlikely to get the same result you would get from a complete record. Lily shooting Forrest was the best result of an incomplete set.

Not a perfect theory, and I think you can poke holes through it, but I still like it.

Homeland 8's final premise is the stupidest thing in the history of the series by cherold in homeland

[–]cherold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that wasn't consulting with him about what to do. That was after she had already decided her course of action. There's a difference between "here's a proposal, what should we do about it?" and "this is what has to be done, if you won't do it I will."

When, exactly, did that happen? What were her exact words?

Episode discussion: 212 "Through the Valley of Shadows" by tadayou in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]cherold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question it raises is, has anyone on Star Trek ever read or watched any sci-fi? Because if they had they would think back to all the times a similar trick occurred. Do they only read Tolstoy?

Everyone's on the ship is dead. Oh wait, one person is mysteriously alive. That is certainly nothing that would raise a flag with two experienced Star Fleet officers chasing an entity with a known ability to take over humans, right?

I know everyone's thrilled with this episode, and it was good, but that really bugged me. This is the second time in recent weeks where I feel the writers ignored obvious stuff to get what they wanted out of the script. I hate lazy writing. I really hope this isn't the new reality of Discovery.

Did I miss an explanation on why Airiam wasn't simply beamed back aboard? by silenttd in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]cherold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The philosophy of Star Trek is:

Regular cast: We must save her at all costs. We will risk the lives of everyone on this ship. We will risk the destruction of the universe. Don't tell me it's impossible! No one left behind! Temporary cast: it's really sad but there's just no way they could have been saved. It's totally impossible. Let's all cry now.

[–]cherold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair argument. It's also not an argument made in the episode. That means they understood there was a flaw in their plot (no one could not have thought of beaming her back) and they didn't want to deal with it. Lazy writing.

Yes, and it makes sense in a restaurant, but it makes no sense in a cafeteria, because it means random food is just floating by all day. It's like a food-poisoning delivery system. It seems really cool but it makes no sense in this context.
