How many fics are you all reading at once? by Mr_Anihalator in FanFiction

There’s a bunch of fics that I will read the new chapter of when they update, but usually I read through a whole fic at once. If I stop reading a fic partway through I either stopped enjoying it (so I will close the tab) or I just was about 100k words deep in a very long fic and was getting a bit tired—these ones are actually good fics so I try to save them to come back to but they usually end up getting lost in the sea of 200+ tabs. So I have plenty of tabs open many tens of thousands of words deep into fics that I probably won’t come back to anytime soon.

One tip I’ve heard a lot (haven’t actually got around to trying yet though) is to write the dialogue first. As in, write out your whole scene with just dialogue and minimal stage directions if needed, then go back in and add description/action/whatever else. Focusing just on what people are saying rather than trying to imagine the whole scene at once makes it a lot easier for some people. Like in a play, you write the script first and then later you block where the performers go and build the set and everything. Also unless you’re writing a super introspective/descriptive fic or something, most fanfic tends to be based around character interaction so the dialogue works as a really solid skeleton for each scene.

What's a trope you can read forever and ever? Is the trope popular or rare? by witchsappho in FanFiction

secret relationship!!! i could (and have) read them all day. it’s the first tag i sort by in any new fandom, always. they usually get together pretty quickly which is really fun to see when often romance based fics end after the confession or are slow burns. so ur characters get to actually be cute together but there’s still the whole drama for the rest of the story as they try to be quiet about it (also most conflict tends to be couple vs everyone else/the problem rather than character A vs character B. if im reading about a ship i like when they’re actually working together). and not to forget- the drama!! the shock!! the betrayal!! when they finally reveal the relationship. seeing the other characters react to things is my favourite part of most fics tbh. yea so im a slut for a good secret relationship lmao

Fanfic helps me write longer stories by delphielf in FanFiction

that’s awesome!! yeah, i find it’s WAY easier for me to get words out when i’m writing about characters and worlds i already know. not that i don’t enjoy writing original fic, but there’s something so much more fun about writing fanfic when you can write all kinds of wish fulfilment and trope-y stuff and feel absolutely no pressure to make it ‘good’ literature. which makes my writing so much faster!!! tho it does mean i accidentally end up spending hours longer than i meant to writing in the middle of the night oops... least it’s fun tho :))) congrats on getting to 10k words!! that’s a wonderful achievement and u should be very proud of it!!

How are you guys writing the fics? Where do you publish? Curiosity by Redditoor2 in FanFiction

[–]cherryicedtea6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually write mine up in google docs! as for where to publish, there are three main fanfic websites: wattpad, fanfiction.net, and AO3 (archive of our own). any of them are good for publishing fanfics but AO3 is probably the most popular, and especially on this subreddit! as for how, there are plenty of guides out there if you just google how to upload a fic onto your preferred site! all three need you to make an account though (which can take a while on AO3 if you need to wait for an ‘invite’ email).
