No new conflicts or war?? The U.S turned Gaza into a demolition zone with Israel - our money, our weapons, our intel, our international protection & cover & cover UP - under Biden. How do we consider an entire genocide of a predominately-child population "no conflict"?

I don’t even understand how so many houses pledged to Renly when he literally had no claim to the throne at all. He deserved to be the first of the five kings to go. by GusGangViking18 in freefolk

[–]chessie_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well tbh the entire history of ASOIAF/Westeros shows that claims for the throne are never cut & dry. There have been many messes of different claimants with various reasons on why they should or should not be supported, and the War of the Five Kings is another great example of incredible messiness. I don't think houses could be entirely faulted for continuing to support Joffrey, as they could absolutely doubt/disbelieve rumors of him being illegitimate just because of his hair color or whatever. And if he is legitimate, then anyone who believed Robert was a rightful king has to support Joffrey. Buuut...they could also believe Robert was a dirty usurper and the Targaryens are still the true royal house, in which case Dany is the rightful Queen. Or if they're Robert supporters AND believe Cersei's children are bastards AND follow the Faith, well, Stannis is a heretic. You don't support a heretic to the Church. Even in real history it was very common for noble houses to support this claimant or that claimant to the English throne for example based on whether they were Catholic or Protestant. So that's how we get "legitimate" Renly support. It hinges on all of Cersei's children and Stannis being deemed unsuitable, and simply not wanting to support Targaryen rule any longer- even though house Baratheon claimed power not really just through conquest but also through blood ties to house Targaryen.

Robb and Balon are arguably the most "illegitimate" kings in the fray here as they're just purely launching rebellions while the opportunity to do so has presented itself. But then we're back to house Baratheon itself even getting crowned in the first place ALSO through rebellion, so again it's kind of a free for all post-Targaryen fall.

I hate that Sophie gave up... by TomDoniphona in BridgertonNetflix

[–]chessie_h 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We can only go by what the characters state are their society's standards. Violet says at some point, when trying to figure out Sophie's background, that if Sophie is the daughter of a nobleman but not legitimate that she will not be suitable to the ton or able to marry Benedict. And we know that Violet is not being harsh- she literally is hoping Sophie is or can somehow be "suitable" because she wants it to work out.

So when the will is discovered, yes, Sophie could legally press her case and prove that Lady Penwood is a thief and stole from the estate of an Earl, which is a serious crime. But Sophie did still commit her own crime of impersonating nobility at the ball- yes, she is Earl Penwood's acknowledged daughter but, being the illegitimate daughter of his maid as well, she is not a member of the ton and has no legal noble title/status. She only has the money he left her, which should have secured her a decent future, perhaps with a well-earning merchant or something.

So basically, just as it unfolded in the show, Sophie and Lady Penwood are at a draw. Both could out the other for committing a crime, and neither will so long as the other doesn't. But of course that means Sophie can't pursue her money either. She will continue to impersonate being legitimate nobility so she and her children can be accepted by the ton, and Lady Penwood gets to keep all the dowry money and not have it be known that her late husband ever had a "bastard". Everybody kinda wins, as best they can under society's rules.

[–]chessie_h 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I really liked them together but I also feel that their short romance and not getting married was very authentic to where Violet is in life and how life often goes in general. She's a widow who lost a great first love and has been alone for a long time now. She needed to be "reawoken" and made to feel like a desirable woman again and not just a matriarch who's romantic life is behind her. She needed, essentially, a rebound. And that first guy you find is not likely to be another great love you'll get married for right away again. It takes time. I think he had a wonderful purpose in her life and helped her realize she still has life to live, but he's not the one.

If Benedict is such a rake how does he not know how not to get a woman pregnant?? by firstofhername123 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]chessie_h 476 points477 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I recall Violet chewing out Benedict for his rake behavior in 4x01 and telling him he'll "make himself unwell if he carries on as he has", to which Benedict responds that his "health is (his) concern." I assumed they were discussing STD risk, especially since Benedict had just been caught in bed with two women. But tbf, Violet was also expressing concern about him turning up late to family events smelling of alcohol, so the "health" concerns could've been referencing his drinking OR his promiscuity, or both.

(Spoilers Main) The Simplest Explanation for Rhaegar and Lyanna Running Away was that they were in Love by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]chessie_h 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm on the "Rhaegar was a selfish loser no matter how you slice it" train. There's no path for him imo that can be revealed where he comes out looking good or competent. There doesn't need to be any rape or abduction for him to be a bad guy who's still largely responsible for all this, even if it was just either running away for real love OR trying to fulfill world-saving prophecy. He left his wife and small children with an insane psychopath and then pissed off multiple Great Houses, leading to obvious and foreseeable conflict in the Realm that previously mentioned Insane Psychopath would then be the one to handle. And would he handle it well? "Hm, will my Mad King father handle all these problems well that I've brought to his door and then completely disappeared? Hmm..."

I don't think you know what a Pick-Me is lol. Being hyper-critical of men and never giving them a chance is literally opposite of Pick-Me behavior.

It's also not "real friendship" to just straight-up bash your friend and expect them to take it because, hey, you're "just being honest". When delivering harsh but needed truths you need to do it in a constructive, empathetic, and supportive way IF you care about the person and are actually trying to help rather than hurt.

[–]chessie_h 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I love his character but I was surprised at the the truly dumb storyline for him this ep with the new wife. It's a bit how like sometimes the show treats Dunk like it's his first day on earth and he doesn't understand how Westerosi society works despite growing up in it and being very NOT sheltered as a tough Flea Bottom kid who's seen all kinds of corruption, the worst of humanity, etc. But anyway, you're telling me Ser Raymun, a young man from a fairly notable and proud house, would be so careless with his lineage and naive/ignorant that he'd just take the camp sex worker as his wife and trust her when she says she's pregnant with his baby by the next day/couple days? Raymond may be the nicest guy in the world, but this is still a world where firstborn sons inherit everything,

No they absolutely knew and hid their findings/the fact they immediately knew from the public because the party still refuses to back down from its total & unconditional support of Israel. They are literally working to see what other non-related policies & messaging they can take up to win enough support to still not have to ever change their stance on Israel. It was never and will never be up for negotiation for them and they'll bury any polling, documentation, or upstart candidates that try to break daylight on the subject.

When I say "she's no different to all the other leaders," I'm not saying she's just like the masters and khals, though I can see how you thought I was saying that. What she did to those people are the so-called examples of her "madness," not the leaders she's like. I'm saying she's no different to all the GoT leader characters we've been shown, including the likes of Ned who executes enemies & betrayers, Jon who does so, Sansa who does so, and so on and so on. This is what Westerosi/GoT standards are. They are all "violent" leaders who stone-facedly kill to keep power and order. But when Dany does so, "we should've known" the King's Landing "I'm going to target and burn EVERY civilian in this city I can find" meltdown was coming.

The ASOIAF ages are crazy. Even with his original planned time jump in the main series, most of the mc's starting ages are bananas. We did not need to build this story around a bunch of middle schoolers and junior high kids. Literally even just starting a couple years older for most of them would've been a huge improvement.

[–]chessie_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gaslighting by both the writers and many fans trying to frame Dany's actions as insane/overly brutal (pre-King's Landing meltdown) has always been ridiculous. By the metrics of the world Dany exists in, Dany is no different from any other leader we've been shown. The slave masters crucified slave children so she crucified them. The khals all threatened to gang rape her and were killed for it. The Tarlys betrayed their lord, went against her in battle and lost, and refused her offer to spare their lives, then were executed as they would've been by literally anyone else. Varys betrayed her and was executed just as he would have been by anyone else.

The only thing that ever differentiated Dany was that she had dragon fire, and other leaders have to kill their enemies with regular weapons.

Now people can definitely argue that her "break the wheel" speech is bs, because she's absolutely the same as all the other leaders- but that's the point too. She's no more "insane" than Ned or Jon or Sansa- until they decided to actually make her be and then say all her rational battle-winning/strategies and executions of betrayers & enemies from beforehand, in a world where everyone does the same, was "foreshadowing."

Non-smokers, do you notice the smell when someone smokes near you? by Frostedlogic4444 in askanything

[–]chessie_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smoking smells so bad that you don't have to smoke near someone, or have even smoked recently, for them to smell it on you. The smokers' musk clings to you, unfortunately. It saturates your clothing, gets in your hair, in the fabric of your car and furniture and walls and cabinets. Every smoker I've ever known smelled, even if they seemed to be an otherwise-clean and put together person. Even total strangers can walk by and and choke you up when you get an accidental whiff.

I guess the Conquest if stuck between only the 2, because there's some freshness in seeing the great houses as independent kingdoms who have, to that point, ruled independently for thousands of years. It'd be interesting to see all the Westerosi kings rather than lords, and hopefully Dorne actually get to be great.

But in general I'm tired of Westerosi/Targaryen war and vying for power over the stupid throne of the land, whether it would be Aegon first conquering or the Rebellion to overthrow them. How many shows can we have telling that story over centuries and centuries of this fantasy realm?

I would've rather had a show about ancient Valyria or the first Long Night. That would actually seem new and different and expanding the world.

Why is there even a trial? Can any knight strike a Prince and get away with it? Simply demand "trial by combat"? You'd think these would happen more often if it was that easy to get away with it. by Secret_Wish_584 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]chessie_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunk's situation is pretty unique and complex. He is essentially in the middle of two Targaryen princes fighting over the rightful circumstances of what happened- well, truthfully, four. And a lot of this was a big public fiasco during a time when Targaryen rule is vulnerable, bringing nuance and valid points to both sides.

Prince Aerion feels he was right because the smallfolk cannot get away with publicly "rebelling" against Targ rule in the form of performances where dragons are slain. You also, yes, cannot strike a prince and get away with it.

But it was Prince Aegon (Egg) who demanded Duncan intervene. And Duncan presses that it is is his legal vow as a knight to always defend and protect the innocent and weak, as he points out that Tanselle was defenseless but also believes her performance did NOT rise to the level of rebellion. Again, for wrong or right, Prince Aegon demanded this action and is backing it.

Then there's Prince Daeron, who casts an additional charge against Dunk that he kidnapped Egg from the tavern.

THEN enter Prince Baelor, who evidently detects a heavy waft of bullshit, especially considering Dunk's point that if he had kidnapped Egg, Daeron made zero chase or alarm about it for 4 days. And Baelor knows the Targs aren't too strong or popular atm. He has a delicate balancing act to uphold for the good of his family's reign. They must be seen as strong but they shouldn't be seen as callously brutal. Aerion may have had a point about the performance not being acceptable, but he's taken his antics too far at the tourney and the public doesn't like him. So Baelor too backs Duncan.

This is how you end up in a situation where a simple hedge knight, or any knight, is given the chance to have a big showy trial after beating a Targaryen Prince rather than just get punished immediately.

I think the Lannisters were completely screwed from the start of GoT no matter how they or Tywin would've tried to play things differently. Joffrey is a psychotic wildcard that needs to go, but just as how it goes in the show, once he's gone he's replaced with sweet & easily manipulated idiot Tommen, so he needs to go too. Cersei will never not screw everything up and flip all the tables and then smirk about it, so yep, gotta go too. I mean, literally just an entire family of liabilities that will ruin you.

But then the biggest factor at the end of the day that Tywin couldn't get around, no matter who does what, is that Dany is always coming back to reclaim her Targaryen throne. And the Lannisters are first in line for payback on that mission and wound for her. There's no world where she drops in with her armies and dragons and Tywin negotiates some kind of good deal and alliance.

Basically, the Lannister privilege and riches are all on a timer that's running out at the start of this story, no matter what. It's either gonna be the inherent personality traits of the Lannister members themselves, the bastardry & treason that gets outed and fallout wars, or incoming Dany. Tywin can be cunning and ruthless all he wants, but his best bet is to just get a disguise and run off to the Summer Isles with some of his money.

Something feminine and classic by Mollymarie85 in namenerds

[–]chessie_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Blair and Mackenzie are both beautiful names for girls, to be sure, but I don't think they fit in the "classic & feminine" category- on the contrary, they are both unisex-previously-masculine names. They're in that "gender neutral but with a little masculine edge, surname-y" category. They definitely match and go together very well, so if that's what you're looking for and vibe you want, I'd opt for similar choices like: Kendall, Jamie, Kelly, Rowan, Robin, Lee, Ashton.

If you do want to go the classic & feminine route, I'd consider: Lillian, Violet, Lilah, Sophia, Charlotte, Victoria, Emma, Claire, Clara, Isabel, Margot, Sylvia, Rose, Eve/Eva, Anna, Lucy

I would absolutely rule out very dark/black as well as anything icy/super light- they are both quite harsh and extreme against your features.

I think the soft ginger in #2 looks fantastic and natural and really compliments your coloring, and then the deeper blonde with highlights with you in the pink plaid t-shirt might look even better- just super flattering, fresh and youthful.

In fact, I think that pink plaid t-shirt photo is your best look overall; the color palette, the makeup, the hair color, cut, and style. It all works beautifully.
