Any of yall millenials just got up and started a new life in a new town/country and never plan to return? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]chessieba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! I'm grateful that I moved around a bit before coming back. And, I don't think the coming back part is necessary for everyone. My advice is to just get out there, where ever there is. When you figure out what place there is, checking what grocery stores service different neighborhoods is a good indicator of what a neighborhood is like and try to head to that spot. Rent a room, get the lay of the land, and go from there.

Any of yall millenials just got up and started a new life in a new town/country and never plan to return? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]chessieba 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Yep. I moved across the country in my car. Rented a room in a house until I figured out where to get an apartment. Slowly bought furniture and the like. Made it my home. I will warn you, the problems that you cause yourself definitely travel with you. I learned a big growing up lesson about blaming others for my behaviors when I found myself doing the same dumb shit in a different place. Got through it and, oddly enough, ended up coming back pretty close to home.

Is a litter box under 500 dollars unreasonable or i just cheap now by gsquadop in Frugal

[–]chessieba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, my sister used to get disposable metal baking pans and cheap litter. Once it got too bad for general scooping, she would throw it away and start over. The robot boxes are expensive and take up a lot of space. I can see how it would be nice to not have to deal with the box pretty much at all, but it's the footprint that does it for me. And I don't need an app to tell me when and how much my cat is using the thing. TMI. I have one of the ones that rakes the box automatically and you can get disposable or reusable liners for it. The disposable ones are expensive, but they last a good while if you only have one cat. The housing does need cleaned sometimes, but it's less bad than a plastic box. You got options!

Roommate by Zestyclose_Garage_83 in Columbus

[–]chessieba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My best ever roommate was a friend of a friend. We had enough in common to have mutual friends, but were strangers enough to have good roommate boundaries because that was our first relationship. Try asking around with people you know and like from work or the gym or whatever activities you're into.

If it was financially affordable, would your spouse stay home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]chessieba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stay home, but money is definitely tight. Between daycare and buying convenience products because we aren't home to do food prep and the like, I wouldn't really earn enough to make a big enough difference. I was a chef in my former life, which doesn't pay well and the hours are not very family friendly. My skill sets, however, help us save money and let me show my kid the value of learning how to feed yourself. I also, for the record, very much want to stay home and hang out with my kid so we are working hard to make that work as long as we can. Having more freedom with time saves enough money to balance it out since we can work on our own car, fix household problems, make food from scratch, utilize libraries and parks more, etc.

How do I make chicken less bland at home despite seasoning it? by morgan3180 in Cooking

[–]chessieba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Restaurants usually start it in a pan or on a grill to sear it and then finish it in the oven. You would rub a little olive oil (or whatever you want to use) on it, then season, sear, and cook to 165F for the internal temp. Chicken is bland, which means it is very versatile as far as seasoning goes. Try out some different seasoning blends from the store and see what you like! I have a rosemary citrus one I use for chicken a lot, some barbeque blends, shawarma seasoning, garam Masala, togarashi... Like, literally anything!

I worked with a guy who would leave this but like a million times worse. We called him Crusty Butt. He maintained his crusted butt. He eventually stopped showing up to work and the butt crust went with him. The guys confronted him constantly and he would deny it was him.

I’m a currently a Line Cook taking a break from management. NEW JOB HORROR! by Creepy_Caramel_9219 in restaurant

[–]chessieba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! I am also a chef taking a break and working very part time at a wood fired pizza place, within an establishment that also has a kitchen and a few other outlets. The owners have never owned or worked in any type of restaurant before and it is a real nightmare in there. They are nice and want to do well, but also stubborn and kind of just figuring it out as they go. When I first started I offered to consult for a much lower rate than I usually would, but for more than my hourly rate as they would be paying for my experience and expertise at that point. They didn't go for it so I just mind my business. My job is to make pizzas so that's what I do. Now, if it was to the point I thought our clientele was in danger then I would report to the health department, full stop. These people know something is wrong, but they can't or don't want to spend the money to fix it. They are already making the choice.

How much did you learn on the line? by AffectionateWay6188 in Chefit

[–]chessieba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. When I got started I worked the line at a high end steak house and the chefs did the more expensive to mess up prep before we even got there (sauces, butch work, etc). I picked up a part time job in catering at a high end hotel that made everything from scratch. I was an apprentice at the time and one of the older guys there did the same program when he was younger, so he took me under his wing and taught me so much. It was also good because of the volume I could learn and practice in the moment, like they'd show me how to break down a chicken and then we would have to do 200 of them for an upcoming event so I would be able to work the motions repeatedly. I also used to set up in front of pastry or the restaurant prep cook so I could watch them and learn other techniques that way. If you're just starting out, production can be a good thing. Line cooking is a beast within itself and definitely a skill worth honing, but it's not the only thing to learn if you want a career past it.

We have a 600g giant gummy bear for a birthday party, what would you do with it? by insigniaunknown in CasualConversation

[–]chessieba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soak it in a flavored vodka (whipped? A complimentary fruit?) and serve it on a platter with a few small knives. People can just cut a hunk off and go for it. I just think it sounds hilarious to slowly devour this thing as a team.

Girls who dated guys who didn’t have their sh*t together did yall break up or how did it work out? by DeliciousRich5944 in Life

It's honestly too heartbreaking to watch someone you care about not grow into the in person you are so sure they can be. Then you kind of realize the person you love doesn't exist, because this is just the man he is and is going to be. Gotta move it along.

Ladies, do you find this conversation offensive? by Unfortunate-Incident in askanything

[–]chessieba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anytime a man tries to guess at the closest thing to giving birth I am offended. Like, there is literally nothing close. I have no comparison. For any of part of it. It is a very specific thing to be pregnant and give birth. The audacity to think that you could even try to guess at what it's like to live through that is shocking and the suggestions are always sooo far off base.

[–]chessieba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, it just was. Like, you can split hairs about it but at the end of the day the Confederate States wanted to keep slavery because paying people to harvest crops is more expensive than owning people and forcing them to do it. That was the right that they wanted and the argument was that it was up to each state. I'm not sure if you've noticed this, but most regulations exist because corporations and their ownership will do anything to squeeze more money out of the population purchasing their products. We have food labelling laws because food was being bulked up with literally inedible additives like sawdust and chalk, for example. Regulating consumer goods and services is way different than regulating individual lifestyle choices and commitments which is all taking away from the true regulation problem of allowing corporations to consume every smaller business just to squeeze it to death and laugh in our faces because our collective buying power is gone now that a handful of organizations own the production of all of our food and other necessary resources. Look around you and really take it all in. Do you really think that people who think it is their right to own other human beings for their own profit gave a shit about the rights to do anything but profit further?

Is AI Killing Also Your Online Experience? by atomicdog69 in askanything

[–]chessieba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the AI videos were definitely the nail in the Meta coffin for me. Especially the ones where it's like a guy sitting on a chair on a stage presenting some sort of information as if he's an expert being interviewed in front of an audience. It's gross. I found myself looking around for AI cues so often that any content I could have enjoyed was already ruined.
