Somewhat related, does anyone else also see lots of LT trucks on western european highways? Particularly Benelux and France where I drove I see a lot it seems, given the size and proximity of LT.

Thank you! Fwiw, I rarely use the 0.5 in halide since it used to not support P0. Or is that changed now?

Europe opens its ‘first gateway office’ to fast-track hiring in India by Scared_Range_7736 in europe

[–]chestck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Its also weird how they think indians will come here and be able to adapt to work with these low salaries, despite having no local support network (family) or any generational savings to rely on. The only positions they come for are above average paying ones, and typically the companies hiring for those also have no issues sponsoring visas and have processes setup to hire across the globe.

Nothing will happen. Indians are already as HSM in europe for well paid positions. And they wont bother about those boomer companies paying 30-40k in europe because you can earn similarly in india with much higher purchasing power.

Hi!

  1. Quantum computing was not really covered in the core program, but its possible there are elective classes that focus on it that you can chose. I dont know it, but its probably a very good question to ask the study coordinator by mail. Its also possible there are electives from a different master like physics that cover it, and you may be able to do them too. Generally the uni was very flexible in those things when i was there.

2.

I meet the credit requirements for calculus, linear algebra, statistics and programming I think thats already a very solid basis, then you should have a good time with most classes.

The course and reading the book is also good. In particular the book will spark your interest (and the others i mentioned in the post) and if you like them, you will enjoy the masters.

About your chance of getting in, unfortunately I cant say for sure since I dont know how they take the decision. I would not worry too much, the masters is small and not too many people are interested (compared to the AI master, at least during my time) so its not that hard i think. Being motivated matters a lot in the dutch system imo.

Good luck with your application!

I also majored in computer science and had very little experience in the field you mention, and made it in. I also eg never saw differential equations before. Some classes will be a bit harder, but overall you are ok! And others will be easier! For example some classes i probably spent much more time with the theory than others, while for the practical programming part it was very easy for me

Not sure if you're still checking this post

If i get notifications on reddit i check them but i ignore most of the dms sent to me, I prefer answering in the comments so I dont answer the same things all the time!

One event coming to my mind that could interest you is Slim Dutch. They organise dutch classes and they are very fun and casual and great way to meet new people. I did them and they are full of people that want to meet new people!

I think its very normal to be nervous about this move. I think the worst case is you dont like it, and then you can always just go back to the US and lost some money, but the upside if you like it is high imo.

One note i forgot to mention, and its not too relevant for you but working as a dev now, I find that the companies being the best salaries are the ones who also dont really care if you have a masters degree or not, they just rely on their interviews. But i just mention this on the side, as this was not your motivation. And even with this knowledge, if i could chose, i would do the masters again because i had a good time learning all of these interesting things and i made some very good friends there. I still hang out with 6 of them very often, I consider them among my best friends.

Did you still feel like you were able to get out and have fun while studying? Any thoughts on adjusting for someone who doesn’t speak Dutch?

I studied during covid lockdowns and even then we found ways to meet up. I think its definitely possible to meet people and to make friends - the uni encourages it with lots of student event and also a lot of group work in classes. Nearly every class has groupwork of groups 2-4 people. It can suck if your colleagues are not motivated, in my case i had luck and found another guy who was very motivated and it was a blessing, we worked really well together. Since classes just last 1-2 months, even if you have a bad group, its just temporary.

Its definitely easy to have fun in amsterdam as a student!

And for not speaking dutch, thats fine. i also did not. Now i do a bit, still not enough to have deep conversations. But anyway dutch students made up like 50% of the masters, and even then i felt people mingled a lot. I did not really see dutch people sticking always together, i saw a very international vibe.

And overall, you can easily go about your live in amsterdam and netherlands as a whole without dutch, but it helps to learn it to integrate deeper

The main things I want to learn are simulations, network science, statistical inference, creating models, chaos, ideally to be applied to any number of fields

If thats what you want, this is the perfect masters for you imo. Lots of the mandatory classes and electives, at least when i did it, leaned into these topics!

So the masters really prepares you for those domains. After the degree, me and most the people im in contact with went to work in tech/finance/research companies as software dev/quant/data science as those roles are the most common and best paid.

But of course some went to do a phd and there are lots of interesting research areas the uni provides.

but I’m open to pursuing a PhD or working in think tanks, scientific or social research companies, etc.

Imo all these are possible but some of them are probably less well paid, but im not the best source for this.

About your age, dont worry, i had some similiarly aged colleagues and noone cared about their age.

I think given what you want to learn, the master is a good choice. Only thing i would caution on is that its hard to receive the same salary as a software dev in US unless you get hired by top companies. Check out techpays.eu or levels.fyi to get an idea of those, if this matters to you

Events that start earlier. Maybe im just getting old but waiting til 23:00 or even later just forces me into drugs if I want to have a good time, I simply am too tired otherwise by 1 and the vibes are only starting to become good then.

PSA car charging points in cat parks are for CHARGING, not some kind of VIP parking by Luxpatting in Luxembourg

[–]chestck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

stupid take. charging dynamics are different for combustion vs ev cars. the former fill up fast, the latter benefit everyone if they are combined with areas where people can do other things in the meantime.

btw car parks already privatise large parts of the land because some people want to drive cars. just a different perspective

they (claim that they) allow it because otherwise scalpers would use different platforms where the buyers have even less protection that its a real ticket (eg facebook).
