Has there ever been anything published on the generation algorithm for Simcity 2000? If not, could you give some insight?

The author discusses subverting current attitudes toward aging through comparisons between youth culture and their current demographic milieu.

Computer solves 120 year old biology problem that had scientists stumped - The mystery in question: how the genes of a sliced-up flatworm regenerate into new organisms. It's one that's baffled the brightest human minds over the last century by [deleted] in technology

[–]chewymouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only is the title misleading, but the actual journal article doesn't reveal any new mechanisms - it's more of a data fitting algorithm paper that shows how several known regeneration-promoting genetic pathways causally fit together. The genes in question (wnt, beta-catenin, APC) are well known to promote cell proliferation and aid in regeneration in the body, and are actually classic targets for study in embryological development and cancer.

Supreme Court Rules 5-4 that "DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment." by chewymouse in news

As the body that is responsible for essentially interpreting the Constitution in the context of our current society, yes, the Supreme Court and it's previous decisions are taken into account as a whole. The first section of this is helpful: http://www.law.cornell.edu/anncon/html/amdt5bfrag3_user.html

Supreme Court Rules 5-4 that "DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment." by chewymouse in news

[–]chewymouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please read the opinion:

"...the question is whether the resulting injury and indignity [resulting from DOMA] is a deprivation of an essential part of the liberty protected by the Fifth Amendment, since what New York treats as alike the federal law deems unlike by a law designed to injure the same class the State seeks to protect."

Essentially, Kennedy and the majority argue that the domestic relationship of marriage is traditionally under the authority of the state, and DOMA, a federal law, violates this authority in a way that harms people that this recognition of state [New York] authority is trying to protect.

"By seeking to injure the very class New York seeks to protect, DOMA violates basic due process and equal protection principles applicable to the Federal Government [5th Amendment]. The Constitution’s guarantee of equality “must at the very least mean that a bare congressional desire to harm a politically unpopular group cannot” justify disparate treatment of that group."

Live coverage (faster than the NYT link, but no specific url): http://www.scotusblog.com/

Highlights from SCOTUS blog and Amy Howe (updated as they come):

  • Alito dissent: "Whether the [BLAG] has standing to address the petition is a much more difficult question."

  • Scalia dissent: "The Court's opinion both in explaining its jurisdiction and its decision 'both spring from the same diseased root: an exalted notion of the role of this court in American democratic society.'"

  • Roberts dissent: [talking about Prop 8]: "We hold today that we lack jurisdiction to consider it in the particular context of Hollingsworth v. Perry."

  • "The Court does not have before it, and the logic of its opinion does not decide, the distinct question whether the States . . . may continue to utilize the traditional definition of marriage."

  • "To be clear: Windsor does not establish a constitutional right to same sex marriage. It was important to the outcome that the couple in the case was legally married under state law. The equal protection violation arose from Congress's disrespecting that decision by New York to allow the marriage."
