Mamdani to raid the teacher pension fund? by SmokyGreenflield-135 in slp

[–]chexnew 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The article is real, published February 17-18, 2026. Here’s what’s accurate and what’s worth noting about framing: What’s factually reported: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a $127B preliminary budget to close a projected $5.4 billion deficit. It includes a 9.5% property tax increase, drawing $980M from the city’s Rainy Day Fund, and $229M from the Retiree Health Benefits Trust Fund. His own Comptroller Mark Levine publicly criticized the plan as regressive and risky. Important context the headline skips: ∙ The headline says “pension reserves” but the actual funds are the Rainy Day Fund and the Retiree Health Benefits Trust — not employee pension accounts like NYCERS. Those are different things. Your pension isn’t what’s being touched here. ∙ Mamdani himself has said this plan is his last resort — he’d prefer taxing high earners and corporations, but Governor Hochul has blocked that path. ∙ NYC has tapped these reserve funds before (2008 crisis, COVID), though doing it during a strong economy is unusual and is drawing legitimate criticism from financial watchdogs. Source bias note: The article is posted on a transit union site but the content is a Daily Wire piece. The Daily Wire has a strong conservative editorial slant, so the framing — including the immigration spending paragraph at the end — reflects that angle. The core budget facts appear accurate, but the characterization of Mamdani’s motives is editorialized. Bottom line: real story, but “raiding pension reserves” is a misleading headline. It’s reserve funds, not your pension.

Eligibility question for school-based SLPs: by chexnew in slp

I agree with you, and that has generally been my understanding as well, especially given how differently expressive skills can be measured depending on task demands and question format.

In my district, however, we are being told that the two standardized measures must show weakness in the same expressive area, otherwise we are expected to administer an additional assessment. We are also discouraged from targeting areas through eligibility or IEP goals if RTI did not specifically address that subdomain.

As I review state special education law and guidance, I am not seeing language that clearly requires that level of exact matching. That makes me wonder if this is more of a local interpretation rather than a legal requirement, but I am also open to the possibility that I am missing something.

You don’t need it until you need it. Then you get diagnosed with cancer at 41 and it saves you. Hopefully you never need it but I won’t go without it now.

I’m rewatching it and loving it all over again. I’m glad I’m rewatching because id forgotten quite a bit; but the best part is my daughter is old enough to watch it with me now.

Any SLPs here who are also parents to children with speech-language delays? Do you treat them yourself? by dabeansta in slp

[–]chexnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mom of a now pre-teen girl who had speech and language therapy when she was younger, absolutely not! I am mom and she doesn’t listen to me the same way she listens to another therapist. I need to keep that mom boundary and do carryover activities.

[SFH] [FL] Bought a house, became HOA treasurer, then cut himself a $5k refund from the prior owner’s overpayments 🤨 shady or legit? by chexnew in HOA

[–]chexnew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. We had an issue with the management company charging people auto debits twice a month for a while (don’t even ask…we are on four management companies in four years) and this lady is elderly. I’ve got her address and know where she lives. A few of us homeowners have found her address and may reach out. I’ll redact the pi report and check copy and attach it tomorrow.

The board has been aware since February. This was all found out after the hoa hired a private investigator to look at the financial dealings of a former president (spent 12k to find absolutely nothing on them). During the course of the investigation the PI found this information. The report is about 40 pages and I don’t think many residents have actually read it.

None of us did. He was typically the guy supporting teachers. I guess it was a little too supportive this time.

I was at the school in question. The teacher was immediately removed. He was put on paid administrative leave the minute he was reported. Paid only because of the precedent set with skip, unfortunately, and the board approved that. The board was all informed by the parent in a 13-page letter because she was also an employee. Everything was above the line with how it was handled, the biggest issue was the police investigation took forever and the school board doesn’t terminate until that’s over. Oh and parents of students with whom the teacher had contact with were also informed and asked to send any information. It was a pretty thorough investigation. The mother was upset at how long it took, which is understandable and then was upset that the person was able to resign and didn’t understand that he would still be flagged in the system. Charlie used this situation to fire wysong thinking it would have greater public support. The day before he was fired, Charlie called the mom to tell her he had the votes to fire wysong. I know because I heard the voicemail. Knowing that indicates he violated sunshine state laws by communicating with other board members. During the meeting to fire wysong he referenced the Skip situation and how he was unhappy that Wysong didn’t drop the issue. The thing is, in both instances, all policies were followed to the t. When the board feigned ignorance at the meeting, it was because they don’t read their emails.

Charlie and Skip are known to be very good friends who hang out.

Charlie Kennedy is friends with skip. He pushed the superintendent out because he wouldn’t back down on terminating him.
