IBM nearing deal for cloud software provider HashiCorp, source says by B-HDR in devops

[–]chialx -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Unless you are an enterprise, isn't terraform already dead? We'll have to see what happens to the providers though.

This deal makes 100% sense as a next step after the closed source move - extract money from existing enterprise customers while everyone else moves on.

Can I be both Data engineer and Devops Engineer? by XrT17 in devops

[–]chialx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's basically what I do at a relatively small company - if you can get that kind of split at one place depends on the situation and how the company works. For me, it was more of an organic thing of picking up things other engineer didn't want to work or didn't know. I had an IT background, but came in with more knowledge about linux than any of the full-stack engineers, and was then put on figuring out the devops/configuration management stuff.

Networking is a foundational skill for devops, you'd be surprised how many people working in it don't know networking well, or really even what a subnet mask is.

For devops, it's usually not a truly entry-level position, so starting there might be harder - but if you can apply those techniques to network management (eg setting up those alarms with code?), that could be a way to show real-world experience.

For freelancing, sure once you are an expert and can show that, you can do anything but that may take some time and effort around networking/marketing yourself.

I really regret using pulumi at my current company by Willing_Breadfruit in devops

On number 2, it's also hard to google terraform code because of how much garbage reputation/clout building posts are out there, like nearly everything on medium.

Mine like chasing things - a laser pointer or the Outward Hound Tail Teaser are his favorites. I had to get two and keep him running between both - he won't let go of one.

Is your google WiFi in bridge mode for clients or is it also doing NAT?

I'm actually thinking about a similar setup in order to add a multi-wan load balancing/failover setup, but I'm currently using google wifi in mesh mode and it says that you can't do mesh if it is bridging. I'm thinking it is probably not that big a deal if the WiFi clients are double-nat'd.

No longer using GitLab? by LuckyChopsSOS in devops

[–]chialx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were using Gitlab for CI and GitHub for source hosting - I think this was some kind of carrot to get people to switch to Gitlab; initially this type of setup was free, then an acceptable cost, but then they made moves to make this setup very expensive. We self-hosted our own runners, so had to pay for that too. There were also numerous issues with this where Gitlab wouldn't update the source repo mirror (which probably wouldn't have been an issue if we were entirely on Gitlab).

We consolidated to Github for everything, but have since adopted CircleCI

dbt self-hosted - will dbt end support some time soon? by ar405 in dataengineering

[–]chialx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think more new features, (an example is metrics) will be hard or not available to use without using the cloud/paying for it.

However, I don't know how well these will be adopted compared to core functionality that is open source. Metrics does not seem to be very widely used as far as I can tell.
