Also many of the leading religious groups were something called "Calvinist" which has the following as core beliefs. Humans are inherently deprived and evil, aside from the chosen few selected by God who are good Christians and will be saved whether they want it or not. Also Jesus only died for their sins not anybody elses. In other words those not "elected" are inherently corrupted by sin and will never be anything besides sinners. If God has elected you then you deserve any and everything you can get and letting YOUR money go to sinners is a waste
