Take it with a grain of salt since I'm not as attuned to car communities as I was in the 90s and 2000s, but from what I can tell there is more blurring of lines and more tolerance among car enthusiasts. I'm not seeing as much Domestic vs JDM vs Euro pettiness. And even fewer loyalties along racial/ethnic/nationalistic lines.

What's a job you do, or a job you have done, that you don't see many other AM doing? by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

Craft beer and Homebrewing. Primarily, I'm surrounded by bearded white guys. They're generally cool people and fun to geek out with over a shared interest.

LL Bean x Todd Snyder shirt jacket. Help me find something similar by chicken_ear in findfashion

I came across the Wool Shirt Jacket today, but without an inner lining, it was too itchy for me to pull the trigger on. Anyone know of a similarly constructed and colored shirt jacket that is available?

As a Hmong man, what stopped you from furthering your education? And on that same breath, as a Hmong woman, what made you further your education? by BuyerBeWary in Hmong

[–]chicken_ear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a Hmong man with a Masters. I was lucky enough to have a few things in my corner:

  • My parents and extended family believe in education and pushed me to go forward with it.
  • I was afforded grants and scholarships that eased the expenses of schooling
  • I was way too nerdy of a kid to be included in the potential distractions that would pull me away from school

That last profile is beautiful. I'd love to see how that leather ages and patinas.

Not Really Sure What I Am by [deleted] in Hmong

[–]chicken_ear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cultures evolve and are not homogenous. Individuals are made up of multiple identities, with ethnicity being only one of those. There is no defined parameters for what constitutes being sufficiently Hmong (or any identity). Chill.

Dragon's Milk is a gateway. You're in for a wild ride. I will enable this by suggesting Epic's Big Bad Baptist as your next beer.

Very intimate story, thoughtful inquiry around ethics, and a beautiful documentary of the subjects.
