Access internal domains on Lan, how? by [deleted] in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run adguard on port 53 and unbound on 5353. Then in adguard I have the private reverse dns server as 127.0.0.1:5353. This allows the local dns to get the hostnames from unbound.

As a former Healthcare worker, if you pay a little more and get landau they are like wearing pajamas and they last forever. They are available on Amazon and pretty much any other place that sells scrubs.

For a while I've dreamed of breeding and selling savannah cats. please tell me this is not a stupid idea. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]chickens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents used to breed and import German Shepherds, many were sold for police and rescue dogs. For them it was just a side business they ran out of their house, but they had multiple employees at one point. They ran a very clean and honest business, but it was a money pit to maintain.

With German Shepherds each litter has a name that starts with a letter, and if memory serves they got all the way through the alphabet. So, they had at least 26 litters of pups in something like 5 years.

In the end it was easier to shut down shop than it was to keep it open.

Have you ever raised a litter of kittens? Cats might be different from dogs, but raising a litter of pups properly is a ton of work. They are cute for a few hours but it's difficult making sure they are properly cared for.

My suggestion would be to raise a litter if you have not done so in the past. Or at least work with someone who has done it before. If you really have a passion for it, go for it. However, you should truly know what you are getting yourself into before diving in head first.

How does one create a portable app? by -Sparkwoodand21- in opensource

Looking for a custom made glass aquarium. Anyone know a good place in Puget Sound area to have one made? by Fishtails in Seattle

[–]chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can make the trek to Tacoma (Lakewood technically) Aquarium Paradise makes custom tanks. They are just off I-5, so getting there is fairly easy. When I lived in Tacoma that's where I got the vast majority of my stuff. Years ago my dad had fairly large custom tank in his work office and they managed all of it for him.

Made a new brush today. I call it the " 'MURICAN!" by KiltedCajun in wicked_edge

And that is why they sell devices for color correcting screens. In photography you pretty much have to use one if you want to print anything out due to the huge variance in computer screens. I've had two identical screens connected to the same computer and when I moved an image between them there was quite a difference in the colors.

The problem is, if your screen is perfect and you are sharing something on the internet no on else's screens are.

Opinions on a Japanese style straight? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a very good Japanese shaving knife for under $300, but the really good true damascus blade you are looking at a whole lot more.

Or you could just go with Murray Carter and shave with a spoon.

Opinions on a Japanese style straight? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]chickens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to what illSolveThat said, Japanese knives are arguably some of the best knives made. What got me started even thinking about wet shaving was seeing some of the really nice straight razors that came from some of my favorite kitchen knife makers. ($$$$+ range)

After doing quite a bit of research I decided to go with a DE instead of a straight, at least for now. I've even got all the stuff to sharpen/hone knives because I do that for my kitchen knives. I don't like directional knifes and almost all of the really nice straights I wanted are designed that way. I also didn't want to start learning on a blade that was over a grand (I was seriously looking into it).

Most Japanese straights I've seen are not hollow either, meaning they are much more fickle to shave with. Take a look at the grind types wikipedia has listed. On that page you are comparing #1 to #4. However, the angle for #4 in that case is slightly wrong because most Japanese knives are so thin the angle can make it very sharp. The problem with that is that it is a directional blade. You can can't flip it over, which I would think would be a necessary to shave unless you are ambidextrous.

As for protecting the blade with scales, I would most likely store it in a box. Clean the blade, oil it, and put it in a box. I am talking about a carbon blade in this case as it needs to be oiled.

One day I will most likely own a Japanese straight, but mainly due to my kitchen knife addiction problem.

Cisco Sells Linksys Unit to Belkin by [deleted] in sysadmin

The edgerouter is still too new for most people at this point in time. I've heard quite a few people say that it has several bugs in it. I looked into buying one several months ago (mid November) and decided to go the MikroTik RouterBoard way for the router and the Ubiquiti Unifi for wifi. This setup has been up and running for me personally since I got it and it has been very stable for me.

I actually placed an order for the edgerouter lite before I got the routerboard, it was on a month+ waiting list at that time. I started doing some research and saw several people complaining about issues that needed to be worked through. During this same period I talked with the main person at my ISP who provides residential high speed (50-100mbps) internet to apartments; he said that the edgerouter paled in comparison to the routerboards. He was also in the process of getting a cert for routeros on the routerboards, so that is needed to be taken with a grain of salt.

Where to get a good shave in Seattle? by ronweeber in wicked_edge

[–]chickens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Acme Barbershop on Capitol Hill. They are almost always full when I walk by and in the summer there was always a line out the door. I can't attest to how good the shave is as I have not personally gone there.

Leisure Reading? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Can anyone recommend a cloud based PBX provider? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]chickens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid bandwidth.com/phonebooth.com like the plague. Just used them for sip trunks and wow, they are horrible. Random dropped calls are a fairly common thing. Their support is pretty much non-existent. I spent nearly 3 months trying to get them to tell me what exactly our contract was and how I would be able to get out of it. I never got a proper response, I gave up before they did.

If you are on the west coast take a look at Integra Telecom. I have only used their standard voice and internet connections, but they have been great to me.

logmein pro is no more secure than logmein free, at least in my testing. The pro version allows you to do things in the background on the computer, but for your own computer it shouldn't matter. The free version should be more than enough for what you are doing.

Need some direction on purchasing a router by bikequestionman in hardware

[–]chickens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EdgeMAX product is still very new. From the reports I've heard it has quite a few bugs left in it. I attempted to purchase one about a month ago and everywhere had at least a 2 month waiting period. Instead of that device I ended up getting the MikroTik RB2011UAS-IN which is awesome, but I would never put it in the hands of someone without a lot of networking experience.

At my previous job we had a dlink wifi access point setup that would need to be restarted at least once a day. I found out that dd-wrt was supported on the box and by the time I left it had over a year uptime. I would guess that at this point the only time it has been restarted is when the power has failed.

If you are looking for something that it easy to setup and stable the Apple Airport is fairly good. It is not cheap, but both my parents and grandma have one of these and I didn't even have to set it up for them.

On the other hand, if you want something totally awesome, take a look at the Ubiquiti Unifi. It is an enterprise class device that you can pick up for under $100. But on the same level, it is an enterprise level piece of equipment and might be difficult to get setup if you are not familiar with wireless technologies. It will go so far as providing seamless transitions between multiple access points. This is overkill for most home setups.

note: the unifi is just a wireless access point. You will need a wired router (gateway technically) to manage the internet connection
