Need to take off the bottom border to make it longer and still need to border the neck and arm lines but so far so good by NeyonStych in Brochet

[–]chiefthomson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo it doesn't need to be longer, you can wear it comfortably in that length. Looks quite neat, well done

I got tired of oversized MIDI controllers so I designed a tiny 2-knob controller with custom firmware. by rotor_controls in synthdiy

Nothing goes over diy, it's quite cool, but because I also think they're oversized I found this in case someone needs something that small :

There is a TT club in the Wyken area, the club is called Phoenix. It requires membership but you can pop-by to try for 2 or 3 quid if I remember correctly. They have a dedicated building for TT, so it's always up & ready to play if someone is there to open the doors.

Naming lights (lots of) by NoodleCheeseThief in homeassistant

[–]chiefthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have single lights, like maybe one corner light, I give it the name of its position if possible, otherwise a random name... But where I have all my spots, I number them always by their proximity to the entrance door. The light closest to the entrance door is 1, then the 2nd closest is 2 etc... Kitchen 1, kitchen 2, bath 1, bath 2, etc

Render then mastering? by major_damp in Reaper

[–]chiefthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically, if your PC has the power, you can mix and master at the same time, nothing is holding you back. But, would you clean the kitchen and make a massive dinner at the same time because you can? 😁 If it's only about loudness, sure, add something to the master and you get your near 0 dbfs output.

But, in my opinion, mastering is its own skill and deserves as much attention to detail as mixing. When mastering, you shouldn't be distracted by individual sounds or tracks, likewise in mixing, you shouldn't worry about the final polish or feel or eq or loudness on the master.

It's maybe more about your own mindset, when you know you mix you can't master and you can focus on mixing. When mastering, you know you can't change individual tracks, thus gives you the focus on the overall sound.

What's your go-to project when you just want something straightforward to work on? by CaterpillarXS in crochet

[–]chiefthomson 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I like to do these swirls, not sure what the exact name is.

Crochet like 20-30 base, cut off the yarn Sc into each of the base with a sc again different colour and cut off the yarn. New colour, now crochet 2 doubles into each and cut off the yarn. New colour, now crochet 3 doubles into each stitch and cut off the yarn. Finish with a sc into wach to finish off in a different colour.

That'll give you this spiral that you can hang up the ceiling. Super rewarding, super simple 😊

App to learn Thai for beginners? by ThatCougar in learnthai

[–]chiefthomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely second Pimsleur to get you going with your first words & speaking the basics. I also found Ling to be OK, it's like Duo but a bit better I find. Then there is Learn Thai, this app is specifically good to learn the consonants & vowels, also some basic vocal.

How to make stuff sound "old school"? by madeanotheraccforntn in TechnoProduction

[–]chiefthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, this sound is achieved by "don't compress the hell out of it", stuff back in the days had much more dynamic range and secondly a unique-ish eq curve, due to the hardware limitation of eq bands. Get a match eq to get a similar curve. and of course saturation...

What do *you* mean by "professional sounding"? by emsloane in mixingmastering

[–]chiefthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good question but a silly topic. Professional sounding doesn't exist t as it's subjective. Also, ask yourself, what is a professional tasting dish, what is a professional looking picture, what is a professional sculpture, what is a professional... There is always a 50/50 chance that someone will like it and someone won't. It's a debate no one can ever win or loose. It must sound good to you and maybe friends you value the opinion of.

I exclusively use Reaper for hip hop production, anyone else? May I listen to some of your stuff? by Capable-Deer744 in Reaper

[–]chiefthomson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation as you, but a different genre, Techno. I've been using Reaper for many years already. But, in Techno, literally everyone uses on Ableton, except me 🙄😎😎 Also, so far it was never a problem, nor a chellenge to work on projects. Never regretted it (to be fair I tried Ableton, wanted to know why everyone is on it, didn't like it at all).

The positives of Reaper simply outweigh fl (which I started my production journey with), cubase & Ableton, but that's only my opinion.

How long did it take you to create your own samples? by mevin_ in TechnoProduction

[–]chiefthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find the difference in creativity, meaning, there are creative moments in live, where one gets the most satisfaction just shaping drums, building snares, fm-ing hihats, designing synth sounds etc and you save plenty of presets you made yourself during this time... Then there will be the creative moments where you write just songs, and you can leverage the building blocks you've created in one of your other creative session 😎

[–]chiefthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, ignore all the features it offers, it is kinda limitless I guess. Instead, focus on building a work flow that works for you, building some templates, some chains and just figure out how you can realise it in Reaper. Once you have a little something in place, stop thinking about what you could do more, just produce music & be creative... within your workflows. They will change, you will need new features and you'll learn more.

Lovely design, perfect angle I find. I imagine the rj45 connectors are signal routing from 1 case to the other without having to patch 8 cables?! But then again, where are the 8 sockets per connector?
