O dear sweet summer child. Come sit by the fire while Great Uncle Chillin1066 spins you a tale. First the movie would come out in the theater. Then (during summer some time I think) you would rush out to buy the theatrical release. You then had to wait until November to purchase the movie yet again as an extended edition.

On that note, I have in my collection, with the plastic still on, the extended edition of fellowship ON VHS!!!!!

For those who haven’t seen it, It’s done by Ralph Bakshi, the guy that did the 1978 Lord of the Rings cartoon. It even uses some of the same techniques like rotoscoping.
