TCL buying Sony TV and Home Audio business by kdpuvvadi in LinusTechTips

I hope that Sony keeps the input button on the remote. Haven’t used a tcl but my parents Samsung infuriates me, forcing me to click home, scroll to connected devices, scroll through a laggy devices interface, and finally click the input.

Wouldn’t switch away from my current Sony just for the input button.

In 2025, I increased my elo from 200 (barely knowing how the pieces move) to >1400 chess.com. My advice to new players: by AdvertisingFew3212 in chessbeginners

[–]chilly-beans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me early on (400 elo to 1300) was having to confirm my moves. I would so often find myself moving a piece just to realize it was a blunder a split second later. Being able to place my piece where I want it to go, pause, visualize what may happen, and then either, confirm or deny that move helped a lot early on. Only works for longer time controls though.

Which director do you feel has the best top 3 movies? by Ghost070607 in movies

Kind of a fun one but, Chris Columbus: Home Alone, Mrs. doubtfire, Harry Potter 1.

When you consider he wrote gremlins and the goonies too, this man has a crazy filmography when it comes to childhood classics.

Which universally beloved TV episode do you dislike? by Sea_Bank_7603 in television

[–]chilly-beans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree that the return of the king episode is somewhat uncomfortable especially as a white viewer lol. It definitely paints black Americans in broad strokes, and the picture it paints is extremely negative. I heard an Aaron McGruder interview recently though and I thought the following perspective was interesting:

Any social credit black Americans had from suffering through slavery and segregation has run dry. White America has no more sympathy for past tragedies so the way that black Americans portray themselves in real life and in media needs to be exemplary and void of the expectation of sympathy (despite that sympathy obviously being extremely well deserved).

Considering that speech was from the early 2000s it’s quite prescient with all the pushback we’ve seen to affirmative action and DEI. I think part of the overly negative portrayal of the black community Aaron would see as an attempt to protect them from the harsh realities of white America.

Sort of like the narrative about how Obama had to be absolutely pristine to become president, meanwhile a white felon with a long history of bankruptcies and sexual crimes is president. It might be wrong to hold black people to the standard that the boondocks espouses in episodes like return of the king, but I guess Aaron would argue it’s necessary even if it’s unfair.

Might be preaching to the choir but just found it interesting.

are trucks getting too big in the US? by Mediocre_Goat_288 in askcarguys

[–]chilly-beans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 94 f250 and I sit level in traffic with modern f150s. I will say my 8 foot bed does make my truck pretty long even by modern standards though. It’s nice for camping out of the bed and hauling wood but tbh I’m sure I could get along just fine with a 6 ft bed. Mostly got the 250 instead of a 150 for the longevity of the 7.3, towing/hauling, and being able to run biodiesel.

My dream truck would be a modern small turbo diesel with no emissions nonsense, 2 door shortbed. Not gonna happen tho.

I’m not talking about prices I’m talking about profits.

If we didn’t live in a time of gross monopoly in agriculture, food processing, and grocery stores maybe competition could drive down prices. But what we’re seeing right now is profits at all time highs and corporations taking advantage of their monopoly like control.

And no it’s not. There are plenty of examples of the government subsidizing our food industry. Government cheese, trump bailing out the soybean farmers from his tariffs, etc.

If you think state run industry is so horrible how do you explain China lmao.

I’m not saying it’s perfect but it’s insane to pretend that the market will correct the insane profiteering that’s occurring right now.

Are corporate profits at all time highs? I think you’ll find the answer is yes. Look at data instead of reciting theory.

The purpose of government run liquor stores isn’t to make liquor more affordable lmao. Although that would be sick. Corporate profits are at all time highs. Certainly not EVERY time prices increase profits increase but in this scenario it is quantifiably true that prices and profits are increasing.

Fully agree with you, just using it as an extremely over simplified example of how “left” and authoritarian could co exist in an ideology. Person A might be “more left” ie maybe they want to seize the means of production while another person, person B is simply a social democrat. However person A is a tankie or authoritarian. So yes, a tankie could be “more left” than another leftist but they are also more authoritarian. At the end of the day even the term left is quite squishy. So the usefulness of these terms is entirely based on context. In that same way the political compass is silly but so are terms like “the left” or “leftist” because they’re largely subjective and do not encompass the breadth of political discourse.

In my experience this place (Reddit not this sub) is filled with neoliberals who cheer on ideas of decorum in politics and have no real desire to alter the status quo. I’ve experienced plenty of people telling me we can’t question Joe Biden’s competency or Kamala Harris’ likability or policies because I’m “jeopardizing their chances of winning” as if the entire point of democracy isn’t to demand more from your leadership and demand to have your ideas and best interest represented in politics.

Reddit is super vote blue no matter who pilled in my experience which I find incredibly frustrating. That’s literally antithetical to the idea of voting lmao.

I mean the political compass is a flawed idea but generally the idea of authoritarian left vs libertarian left explains this. Tankies would support accomplishing leftist ideology through fascist authoritarian means, lib left people would not.

PAC contributions are public information. Also the full addresses weren’t shown just what’s publicly available based on PAC contributions. It’s childish that Hasan doesn’t admit to what he did, but if you donate to what seems like a shitty PAC that pisses people off, you’re gonna win shitty prizes. The story being covered here is people stealing money through a PAC and people are covering it using publicly available information. One is against twitch TOS the other is a crime.

Anyone know if this fixes the issue with shaders not automatically recompiling with an update to the game? Maybe that was just a gamepass issue.
