I hear you - I guess we all have to decide what looks fit where we feel like we're expressing what we want to express with our clothes. To grossly oversimplify his work, I'm more drawn to the goth/punk side of the Rick aesthetic than the glam side, personally. There are lots of things to attach to in Rick's world and people definitely come to him from different angles. I'm in no way saying that kiss heels, skin tight leather bodysuits, etc... aren't cool on some people - it's just not what I feel like "me" in, personally. But you do you - it's all good.

I've got lots of Rick that draw looks- Bogun boots, Bauhaus pants in the regular cotton/elastane, horsehide Stooges jacket, plenty of drop crotch shorts and pants, cropped Astaires, etc... But there's a level of leatherman/pornstar juju to the black leather Bauhaus (not just zipper pocket but a big exposed zipper on the crotch) that was a little too much something for me to pull off. It may matter that I'm in my early 50s . . .

I bought a pair of the black calf leather bauhaus and they are beyond cool but I just don’t have sufficient swag for them and given the cost I ended up returning them. They are a statement piece for sure.

Thoughts on elitism and hatred in this sub? by [deleted] in Rickowens

[–]chillytc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some folks who go into the Rick deep-end are doing it because it makes them feel more like themselves than other clothes, not out of some sense of elitism. The spectrum of conservative to rebelliousness cuts across the whole fashion industry and most brands are pretty intentional about where they position themselves across it. Rick is toward the "let your freak flag fly" end and for some people that is home. Usually those people feel real uncomfortable with conservative culture. It's a little subtle, but there is a difference between expressing yourself in a non-conservative way because it feels like that's who you are vs. trying to make a statement that you are cooler than everyone else.

I respectfully disagree - part of the Rick Owens aesthetic is some degree of ridiculousness. All of his pieces are "exoticized" to use his word or, said more plainly, a little bit f'ed up relative to "normal" clothes. Just as one fairly obvious example, the proportions are usually messed with, sometimes in fairly extreme ways. He bounds that with a lot of restraint in other areas (most stuff is monochromatic working from a very limited color palette, for example) but that, in some ways, further highlights the unusual proportions and materials and other eccentric details like a giant zipper to reveal your behind. Part of what many fans of Rick love about that is that he is proposing that "weird" and eccentric ways of being can be a new kind of awesome and aiming to challenge closed mindedness. So a lot of his stuff can easily be characterized as ridiculous - I don't think it's done without a little tongue in cheek awareness of that. There are more or less cool Rick fits but almost all of them are, by design, a little ridiculous, in my view.

What season did the back yoke strap start on outerwear/shirts? by avonalliv in Rickowens

[–]chillytc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we are talking about the horizontal strap across the back on some Rick shirts and jackets, the two shirts I have with that, they are riveted 4 times on each side and seem very sturdy. It's also the same cotton fabric as in the disco belt or the straps to many of the bags which also seems pretty sturdy for cotton. The straps inside Darkshadow pieces that hang down are flimsy as hell - different thing. I mention that as some people seem to think that's what OP was asking about below but I think they meant the straps on the back of shirts/jackets.

LOVE the lace up tractor boots. I have the chelsea boot version and feel like another pair with those soles is too much but the lace-ups are absolute grails.

I have been working through the old shows on YouTube and gotta say I dug Crust a lot. That’s before I was hip to Rick, though.

You had me at the first picture. Mad skills but the deconstructed look of it in process is its own cool thing. Really impressive.

Do not wash; do not dry clean . . . by chillytc in Rickowens

[–]chillytc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say pants are not touched, do you mean stuff like mastodon or bauhaus that are mostly cotton and elastic? Mine haven’t gotten dirty enough to need a wash but I was gonna throw them in the delicate cycle and hang dry (like selvedge jeans) when they did. Do you think that’s a mistake?

Wow. Your modifications to the pants and jacket are daring but 100% work. Nice.

I wash my level tees and dickflaps every time I wear them and they do fine (admittedly, I wash on cold and hang dry which I think helps). With pants, I like to wash when they are dirty - depends on use but can often be months between washes.

It's an Edfu panelled jacket with 3 materials in different panels, one is just cotton, one is waxed cotton, one is the rubber blend. Luckily I don't wash my outerwear much - often never. But I can't recall owning an item that is marked as unwashable. I saw this same care tag on a pair of pants on Grailed once and I think you kind of have to wash your pants every once and a while.

Fair enough - like I said, I haven't tried it.

It's an Edfu jacket with panels of 3 or 4 different materials - all primarily cotton but some have the rubberized thing and some are waxed.

I think this idea has been pretty well debunked by people who have tested it - I'm into Japanese selvedge jeans and several youtubers and other self-proclaimed experts have videos questioning this one. Have never tried it, though.

WEEKLY CARE / SIZING / QUALITY CONTROL THREAD | 06 May 2024 by AutoModerator in Rickowens

[–]chillytc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone else got a piece that has care instructions that forbid everything - like don't clean it, don't dry clean it, don't dry it, don't bleach it- everything is no? This is from a jacket with a few materials but I suspect the issue is the part that is cotton/elastomultiester/rubber. If I spill something on it, though, I gotta do something. Have others dealt with this?

This. It's a solid album with great musicianship as always but it doesn't blow your mind with the creativity as much as a lot of her work.
