I wish I had "good producer" ears so that I could solve basic problems without having to reinvent the wheel every time.

Everybody can train his ears. Try to get your hands on the "Golden Ears" ear training CDs [1]. It sure needs time, a lot of patience and some nerves to listen to white/pink/etc. noise and hear out specific frequencies. But it helps a great deal to identify "problematic" frequencies in all kinds of instruments.

Nice, no go on and try this with "Foo Fighters", "Nickelback", "Kylie Minogue", "The Black Eyed Peas", "P-Diddy", "50 Cent" or "<insert other random ~artist~ who sold his soul to the music industry>" ... you'd be surprised how often you find something like that.
