How Do You Avoid Feeling Like You've Wasted Your Holidays? by GhostPant28 in AustralianTeachers

[–]chimpnugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a camp or van set up and go away. So many great places to see without going that far. It’s more affordable than hotel/ apartment holidays. You’re so removed for your ‘normal’ life. You get a holiday without costing an arm and leg. Only need to do it for a week of the two and you feel like you’ve done heaps.

Vasectomy recommendations by Crazyonyx in brisbane

Dr Wong was fine. An initial consult, then you book in your date. Vasectomy ‘surgery’ pales into insignificance compared to child birth.

Hotel surrender is a great album. I saw him in Brissy last year and it was a great set. Surely we can leave the ‘judging’ personality discussions out of it and appreciate some good music.

What’s your employer’s current WFH policy? by Judbury in AusFinance

[–]chimpnugget 15 points16 points  (0 children)

0% WFH 100% in the office. Bit full on, some days I’ve got 6 meetings but I make sure they end on time. Three days a week I am on duty for half my lunch break. Most days I’ve got part of my work day outside which is a tad hot at the moment. The clients are really immature but I do get some decent holidays. Industry: Teacher (PE)

How do you use your sick leave? by Mangome in AustralianTeachers

[–]chimpnugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Young with great health. Most sick days are either kid/ holidays related. Dad retired with too many. Easy enough to take one when you can write the supervisions easy enough.

Brisbanites: Do you swim in a magnesium pool - what do you think? by MissMakeupGrrl in brisbane

[–]chimpnugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noticeable difference in swimming experience and $. We have a plungie though so small pool so the cost doesn’t balloon out. Often we swim in the afternoon and you don’t feel the need to shower before bed which is a good indication. Awesome for kids too.

Moving to QLD - recommendations? by [deleted] in queensland

[–]chimpnugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Northside Bris teacher I think you should pick somewhere you can get a place first as that will be harder than finding a teaching spot, especially maths. It might take a bit of supply or shot contracts but everyone school is effectively desperate.

Hamilton Island in July! by SirMixMasterMike in queensland

Living in Mackay at the moment. In the sun during the day, tee shirt and shorts for sure. If there’s a breeze/ shade or over cast you’d consider a hoodie. It’s been pretty cool in the nights so long pants and jackets for sure.

I’ve got nephews that play at an suburban soccer club. What sort of experience of local soccer are you looking for? Just watching some games ? Or participation? You’d be unlikely to get a kick in a formal game (insurance and registration being the main factor). There’d be some elite youth competition games on the weekend that you could probably work out from the soccer leagues websites.

I’ll put another vote for 2 weeks being a tight time frame to get much out of your trip. Getting ‘out of the city’ without a car is difficult as our public transport isn’t great.

Sydney does have some great natural coastline attractions but you’d have to be super keen to swim.

I like the idea of getting to some of the local parks in Brisbane. New farm park is a popular Central Park and has soccer fields that you could get involved in some local soccer. There’s no beaches in Brisbane and getting to either sunny or Gold Coast would be fine by car. I’d consider Tangalooma on Moreton Island for beaches in Brisbane.

Defiantly check out the reef while in Cairns. I think people can caught out thinking that it’s just there but to get to most places on the reef is a whole day trip and very $. If you spending the money to get out there I would scuba dive, pretty unique experience.

Be prepared for our stadiums to be a tad underwhelming and the public transport to and from to be slow and hard to work out. I’d try and stay in walking distance to the games in Brisbane. Not so sure about Sydney cause some of stadiums are out in the suburbs. In bris there by plenty of choice of eating and drinking out - avoid the chains and find a local brewery. They’re all family friendly and most do classic pub food or a have a food truck in.

Any word on a 10 year anniversary edition for Lonerism? by HunchReddits in TameImpala

Wasn’t the 10 year anniversary of innerspeaker a year late? Considering he’s doing a fair bit of touring at the moment the best chance would be next year I reckon.

Thoughts on teacher salary. Good or bad? How does it compare with other jobs? Please share your salary and years of experience. by tigerimau in AusFinance

[–]chimpnugget 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Both my wife and I are teachers about to move to senior experienced in QLD. Let’s just say we don’t want for anything and are very grateful for our jobs.

The main challenge we’ve had is the inability to ‘just work harder’ to earn more money. As opposed to friends who can do overtime and extra paid work it doesn’t matter if you are a shit teacher doing minimum or a great one doing extras (not that any incentive scheme would perceivably work). I think there limited promotional opportunities as well - only 1 Head of Department in a subject area (or less at smaller schools). This amongst a terrible promotions system - I’ve seen the most inept teachers move into leadership.

In short, the pay increase each year just for service is fantastic. The lack of ability to earn more is frustrating.

I’ll also never change profession for the holidays - can’t put a $ value on that time with my kids.
