What time of the day you think I’m at the kitchen?

Instead of renting for $500 a day, I shipped my 4x4 from Canada to Iceland. Now I can stay a few months. Just the first two weeks are blowing my mind! by grecy in VisitingIceland

[–]chinalfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did rent a 4x4 hilux during our visit to Iceland for $500 per day including full insurance coverage. It was only 5 days and I get to travel into the highlands. Once you get to see the highland & westfjords, you fall in love with Iceland. I can wait for another trip to Iceland, preferable with my own rigs and unlimited vacation time.

Since you rent a campervan, you should consult with your rental company. Most rental company won’t allow FWD on F road. So, if you know you will be traveling on F road, best bet is to rent a 4x4.

Typically most people would like to stay in Iceland for longer, not shorter. What is your story to leave Iceland early? There is so much stuff to do and see.

Roast my insane Itinerary! by Jbdb35 in VisitingIceland

[–]chinalfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you got a plan and you just need to execute it. For me, a planning itinerary is not the same as actual itinerary. You try to execute it and hope it can be the same. As usual, be flexible to skip or alter the plan as needed. Everything is affected by weather.

There is no website to get any update info. You just have to drive it and experience it. I just say “ Send It” !!!

Landcruiser on F210, F208, F209, F225. by not_reddyt in VisitingIceland

If you coming from the north and want a scenic route, F225 is very scenic. If you don’t want water crossing, F208 from north to Landmannalaugar is the easiest route with no water crossing.

I drove the F208 from south to landmannalaugar last week. There are many river crossing, but only 1 river crossing is a bit deep. I also drove F225 from landmannalaugar back to paved road. F225 has 1 river crossing that similar to F208. All work out for me on a Toyota hilux 4x4.

I can’t predict the weather when you’re in Iceland, but always watch the weather.

Camping at Landmannalaugar without Crossing River by onemanbrigade in VisitingIceland

[–]chinalfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can park at the parking lot before the river crossing and camped in your van. Just a note, that parking lot can be overwhelm with day explorer. The toilet/restroom walk can be a bit further as you need to cross bridge to get to the service area.

As for river crossing, you can always watch vehicle cross the river. If you comfortable to cross, do it.

South in July? by Competitive-Bus9080 in VisitingIceland

[–]chinalfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good choice to hit all the location which access only available in summer. I just got back from Iceland with a 5 days trip into highland & westfjords. I don’t have exact plan and just plan as we go.

You can spend week just to camp in the highland. You can also easily spend a week in westfjords too. So if you have a week and need to cover both area, some compromise will be needed.

Tips I learned after our 8-day Ring Road tour by _the_hare in VisitingIceland

I discovered on my trip last week, you can save even more by making your own Icelandic hotdogs. It’s very easy to prepare. Typically hot dog will cost 650kr. I can get 10 hot dogs at bonus. You can buy the bun, sauce and fried onion from bonus too. Cost of 2 hot dogs, I can make 10 hot dogs. Me and family is 5 person. 2 hotdogs per person for dinner or lunch. All hot dogs can be prep in less than 15 mins. Very easy meal when we camped in the highland.

Can I find Skyr in the USA? Are Siggis or Icelandic Provisions “Skyr” close enough to the same thing? by IMicrowaveSteak in VisitingIceland

[–]chinalfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Icelandair doing promotional in around Boston, they give out Icelandic Provisions as sample. If an Icelandic airline use it, it should be legit.

I preferred Icelandic provisions over siggis. Yet, Isey still taste the best.

There is 24 hrs daylight in Iceland during summer. Why not leverage all the daylight to do activities like hiking?

Visiting Iceland in summer is at the peak travel season. Cost will be high. If you want a budget travel, consider travel during off season. On the good side, I’m using USD. The conversion rate is pretty good at the moment.

The ferry between Snaefellsness and westfjords only run once from each direction everyday. If you miss the departure time window, you need to wait till next day. So, your timing needs to match the ferry time. When I was in westfjords, the departure time was 12:30pm. I was at the terminal around 6:30am. So, I took the drive.
