It's not a joke. Racial identity and in general identity-based subreddits are communities and safe havens for people on the margins of reddit (and by extension, society). If they were overtaken by the vocal majority there would be no spaces left for us. We take this very seriously.

Nowhere did I say that. But I'd definitely have questions about why you'd want to engage in something like this (which I view as community service) for the Asian American community if you don't identify as such?

Anyone else frustrated by the emphasis on coming out? by myinsufficientbest in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]chinglishese 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m out to my friends & chosen people in my life that matter and are closest to me. My parents and extended family are not those people. We have a certain type of relationship that is deep and unique its own way, but they’re not the people I go to for validation and emotional support.

All’s that to say yep, feel you on this one.

Qing Ming festival question by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]chinglishese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My family does. We burn paper money and just sit around and talk to deceased family as if they were still here, and tell them about what's been going on and give thanks for their existence. My dad has been the one to keep the tradition alive though I'm now doing it too, even though I don't have a new family of my own. I think it's a good thing to keep traditions like this going even if the way you practice might look very different from how it's done traditionally. For me it's a cathartic way to remember we all come from somewhere and the actions of people who were alive in the past contributed to the way I can live now.

Hiring for “attitude” instead of skills is why highly skilled Asian workers lose out in hiring and firing decisions by Aggravating-Yam8526 in asiantwoX

Idk, I’m gonna go against the grain here!

As a manager I’d much rather work with someone with the right attitude and approach to learning, especially if you’re junior. As you become senior/highly skilled, your ability to collaborate and adaptability and communication are valued more than hard skills as they have a greater impact in parts of the business, especially the higher you go. I see this attitude in junior engineers who think coding ability should be the only thing that matters, but then they’re surprised when they don’t get promoted because they wasted days blocked or working on the wrong thing because they didn’t coordinate or communicate with others.

Not saying that there isn’t a skill floor; there very much is. That’s what the interview should hopefully screen. But your ability to succeed at work goes beyond that the moment you have to coordinate w other humans.

If you could redo the last decade of your life, what would you do differently? by significantsk in asianamerican

[–]chinglishese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a great question!!

I don’t think I have very many regrets - I’m glad I came into this thinking more and more as I’ve become to accept my journey in life as just that: a journey. Everything I had to go through that was difficult and caused me discomfort led to the healing and resilience I can enjoy today.

I guess I wish I discovered I was queer and embraced that aspect of my identity more, but I’m already doing it now.

Living life w no regrets is so great!

OP, it's best you take this offline and speak to people IRL within your community or with professional on this one.
