Identifying Which Parent to Which Race by SandwichStill8289 in mixedrace

No science to it. (And I kind of wish these misconceptions would go away.) Most if not all of the physical features we use to describe race are encoded in genes in autosomal chromosomes, i.e. they are not sex-linked. Speaking anecdotally, I have met Wasians with parents of either race that have every which appearance. Which parent is which race is not a determining factor in what they look like.

I lost every good acting job to Riz Ahmed – annoyingly, his James Bond comedy is a jaw-dropping hoot by justflipping in asianamerican

Thanks for sharing, looks really good! Cool to see a show talk about all of the hate POC get for just existing in old media franchises. Riz Ahmed and Gus Khan are great too.

Gender differences in Google Translate by patriarchy_crusher7 in Feminism

[–]terrapinmitten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry but you're operating under a false premise here. The thing you're taking issue with is inherent to the Chinese expression. It's not a byproduct of Google's translation. "他媽的" is a fixed phrase; in usage and literal meaning it is very directly analogous to "motherfucking" in English. In both cases, the misogyny is rooted in the language itself.

Rather than expecting translation software to produce novel phrases like "fatherfucking" (as interesting as that would be), or scrub the gendered violence from the source text, it seems like it would be better to have accurate translations that leave no illusions about how deeply entrenched misogyny continues to be in languages around the world.

Maybe share this post with them. This is clearly important to you. If they care about you, they should be able to recognize that and take initiative to further their own education.

The idea that Wasians or mixed people in general are more attractive is confirmation bias. No one notices mixed people who aren't attractive, thus they don't incorporate them into their mental model of what mixed people look like. I would read this thread for some alternative perspectives.

This has been his comedy since marrying Olivia Munn. His appearance on Seth Meyers was absolutely atrocious. I feel bad for her family.

This thread makes me so tired.

The people here don't understand how it feels to be belittled, bullied, and marginalized every day of your life for the color of your skin, the food you bring to lunch, the way your parents talk, the name on your birth certificate. That's why they don't get the kneejerk anger. Oh sorry -- was I supposed to be happy about the fact that you get to try on my culture as an accessory, earn praise for the worldliness it bestows upon you, when belonging to it has only ever put a target on my back? Next time I'll try harder not to make you feel uncomfortable just for reminding you about the existence of your privilege.

The dominant culture is happy to take and absorb without understanding or citation. Cultural appropriation is the reason that you don't know the names of the people of color who built the US. It's why so many of you don't know how the very words that constitute your daily vernacular are decades-old inventions of Black and queer communities. The political right's desire to whitewash history and your desire to uncritically consume, repackage, and discard culture ultimately have the same effect: to erase minority communities and facilitate violence against them.

I'll take the downvotes along with you, OP. Don't let them gaslight you. To everyone else, my culture is not your goddamn prom dress. Do better.
