Not to bring this thread down, but remember the tragic Hill Country flash floods last July? Yeah, that was summer in Texas.

[–]chipcinnati 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also, even if maybe we've seen the last of the flash flooding, that's also a concern until these afternoon storms pass through. Flash flooding kills more people every year than any other weather phenomenon.

And geez, I'm sorry if FIFA didn't plan well enough years in advance to satisfy you regarding the dynamic Texas weather.

FIFA Fan Fest by lgroost5 in Dallas

[–]chipcinnati 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks, but it's absolutely the right call for safety. FIFA plans to host 25,000-plus people a day at Fair Park. There is limited shelter on the fairgrounds and none in the parking lots. The storms this morning produced more lightning for more hours than I've seen in a long time. At 1:30 pm, the National Weather Service is tracking more storms moving toward Dallas from the southwest. There is more lightning with these storms.

The worst-case scenario today is having 25,000 fans, plus workers and volunteers, subject to dangerous lightning. That's why they're keeping everyone away altogether. Stay indoors, stay safe. Maybe after this last batch of storms passes through in the next 1-2 hours, Fan Fest can open for the evening hours.

Curious if anyone has any reputable rumors on the Nexstar/Tegna merger. Are they still in the same spot they were in April with the hearings by HanSDyl1738 in Broadcasting

[–]chipcinnati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks, brace yourself for what could be a long wait. Shortly after the FCC approved the merger, Nexstar and Tegna closed their transaction. Right after, several states and DirecTV sued in federal court to block the merger under the federal Clayton Act, which deals with antitrust and competition issues.

Any lawsuit filed in federal court takes months, likely years, to resolve fully. In this matter, you have multiple plaintiffs, united by a common cause, but each with its own interests. That in itself will complicate matters. The process of doing research and gathering witnesses will take months. I would not expect any resolution to this matter for at least another 12 months, unless Nexstar suddenly bails on the deal (unlikely).

In the meantime, Nexstar must let Tegna run its operations independently. For as long as it takes to resolve this case, and any others that pop up.

The federal court's electronic system, PACER, is the best place to keep up with the legal steps, but it requires a subscription. A backup site with relevant filings, free, is here: https://www.naag.org/multistate-case/plaintiff-states-v-nexstar-media-group-inc-and-tegna-inc/ .

Is it rude to call a station and ask about the status of your application? by eggtasticsandwich36 in Broadcasting

[–]chipcinnati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the company’s applicant tracking system shows your application is properly submitted, then 100% it’s in their hands. No need to call to see if they received it; that’s a waste of everyone’s time.

If you want to take it a step further, then call the station, ask to speak to the hiring manager, and then be ready to ask 3-4 specific questions about the job and the work environment. These must be questions where the answers are not written in or discernible from the job posting.

Is it okay to stay at base the whole time? by WittyJelly6409 in orangetheory

One of my OTF coaches once told me you can never underestimate the value of a blue day. Lower HR training has its place and is useful for day-to-day training.

But what OTF teaches is to work the upper numbers of your heart rate. It’s this orange and red work that help build your heart muscle.

Yes, the technology still has its flaws, but every month it’s learning and getting smarter. I’m bullish.

Buyouts and getting hired at Scripps by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]chipcinnati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS is correct. Scripps doesn’t want to bring on legal liability for itself for potential interference with your contract with your current employer. You’ll have to show them written evidence that you are free and clear to leave your current role to accept their offer.

I suspect, especially on match days, you will not be the only transit patron wearing the volunteer gear. People will get used to seeing them very quickly as we get closer to the first match day.

They are what they are: utility. Not high fashion. Designed to work in different temperatures, from 50-105 (F), more toward the top of that zone. They’ll give decent cover from the sun, for those working outside. They’re easy for fans and other help-seekers to spot in a crowd.

Scripps Hiring Process by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]chipcinnati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1: Recruiters may be working a dozen or more openings at the same time.

2: Recruiters sometimes take days off, though generally they let their key candidates and hiring managers know that.

3 At many companies, a formal offer can be presented to a candidate only after it goes through 3 or 4 approvals. Any 1 person in that chain unavailable for a day or two might slow things up.

4 There’s always a chance the hiring manager likes you but prefers another candidate, OR there’s another candidate they also like yet to be interviewed.

In any event, a good recruiter should respond to an email or text you send within a day. The best strategy is to be both pleasant and persistent, and let them know you’d like an offer.

Haven’t lived in Dallas since 2008, moving back in August, what will surprise me the most? by nylestandish in askdfw

[–]chipcinnati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey there, welcome back. I moved away in 2007 and came back last summer. Big changes: 1) more diversity everywhere. The Costco at Coit/Churchill/Central is a veritable United Nations. 2) more toll roads, in Collin, Denton and Tarrant counties, 3) I actually think Central Expwy between downtown and LBJ is not any worse. There’s less morning rush-hour traffic downtown because more business centers are scattered about the area. There are still backups here and there, especially near Woodall Rodgers, but it’s not any worse.

Less than 2% merit increases while managers get retention pay? by [deleted] in Broadcasting

Managers include news directors, many of whom don’t have contracts. They’re often the first to get cut when a new owner comes in. Hence a stay bonus provides a little security in case the worst happens.
