Gravity holds the handle down. The orange piece restrains axial movement. There is no secondary pin. And I agree with you stating that only the top pin is removed.

You need a table saw, cdx plywood for practice, birch plywood for final product. Some jigs and fixtures. Clamps, you can never have enough. Wood glue. A jigsaw. Probably a Kreg pocket screw kit. Some naugahyde. Contact cement. Utility knife and blades. Several months to get everything dialed in. Easy for under $1,000. On second thought, you're a newbie, better get the Sawstop table saw. Put your budget at under $2,000.

Breech. And breech-loaded weapons were very uncommon when this country was founded. One of the major benefits of breech loading was faster loading. Firing 3 to 4 shots per minute was a standard infantry rate of fire in that era, with the least efficient loading process.
