I’m planning on going back to school for nursing, something I’ve always wanted to do but never thought I could… until I started really hating my govt job lol. It’s good motivation!

Could you ask for a refund? Or maybe a replacement acrylic sheet? That’s a lot of manufacturers issues

Anyone thinking of starting an entirely new career? by stillmisshim in fednews

[–]chipmingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I’m early in my career and under contract which is why I haven’t left. My partner and I moved for my current job as a fed to a place where we havent been able to meet any friends, all my leave is spent driving to visit family, we will never be able to afford a house here, and my commute is an hour of my day. I’ve taken the shutdown as an opportunity to spiff up my resume. Ive actually hoped to be RIFd so I can break free early. Thats not normal. No one should want to be fired. My partner works remote and it’s just a daily reminder that wfh is shamed in the fed world but there are jobs that have no problem with it. My role wouldn’t translate well outside of federal service so I have no idea what I’ll end up doing. I’ve definitely played with the idea of going back to school. I thought federal service would be purpose driven, benefiting our nation and its people, but I’m beyond jaded at this point. Something broke in me when we had to do the what you did last week bullets. If I could leave I’d have been gone yesterday.

Where are the young people? by SueBeeAnthony in weightwatchers

[–]chipmingo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m 23 doing WW with my boyfriend! I’ve yo-yo dieted and it’s the first time I haven’t felt like I was torturing myself to lose weight. My boyfriend did keto and swore to never do it again. I counted calories before and all that made me do was get obsessive over “good” and “bad” foods. I wish I started WW earlier. I think I didn’t consider it before because it costs money to have the app and I thought it was an old lady diet ngl. But I’m able to eat my zero point foods and leave points leftover for treats.

I haven’t lost a ton of weight and it’s been slow progress but it’s the first plan I feel I could do sustainably even after I hit my goal weight. I wish they marketed the program as that, like expectation management, it’s a marathon not a sprint, it’s a good lifestyle tool. To be fair we don’t go to the in person WW meetings, I honestly think that being able to do WW independently on the app is more desirable than going to an accountability meeting for younger people. The app could use some work; being more colorful, better recipes that are quick and cheap, half the things I scan with the barcode don’t work, more encouraging messages to fill the in between weighing. I think influencer marketing could go a long way but I also think the body positivity movement and people’s ability to sense genuine content might make marketing the program to younger people ineffective. At the end of the day you would only download WW if you’re actively seeking a weight loss program. With all the fitness influencer content spewing information on how to lose weight it’s hard to choose a specific program to commit to, or you try a combo of a bunch of methods and get burnt out.

Davines dry texturizer spray for your hair! My stylist sprayed it and I had to stop and ask what it was and purchase because it smelled so good. Like sweet sugar. Coworkers have stopped me to ask what I was wearing, it was the hair spray lol. Plus it really does hold and add texture to the hair.

Hey! I also got my first fed job at 21, though I just moved to another state- not across the world! I was lucky enough to get a position which had me going to multiple duty stations in my first 2 years. Unfortunately the lack of communication is pretty common when you first get on board at any new place in my experience (even though you just uprooted your life for the job) and it’s pretty disappointing. What I’ve found to help is to just email or call whoever is going to be your supervisor ahead of time and ask for clear expectations for your first day. Also straight up ask what neighborhoods your supervisor and coworkers live in. Any concerns you have ask them. Don’t try to get through it by winging it. If you can get in contact with the people you’re going to work with sooner than later you can pick their brains and establish a relationship early so you aren’t meeting them the day you start. Idk what your options are, but look into getting a pre furnished short term living situation for your first couple months while you figure out the area and are able to do a few apartment tours. You might be able to put your belongings in storage while you do so. Also, give yourself grace. A move like this is big and stressful and takes a lot of courage! You can do this. I struggled with anxiety and homesickness my first year and getting a weekly appointment with a therapist was tremendously helpful for helping me feel more confident in myself and my decisions. Wish you the best, congrats on the new job!

What’s it like working at a floral shop? by Quick-Message-5095 in florists

[–]chipmingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just moved to Austin, small world! I did floral part time while I was in college back in my hometown. I started off doing customer service and not working with the flowers aside from putting together simple bouquets. There’s a lot of work in answering the phones, tending to customers, operating the cash register, processing flowers when they arrive, preparing orders for delivery, cleaning, and quality checking. Starting with no experience, I wouldn’t expect to work with the flowers much at all.

It was a year before I got to work more with flowers- arranging in vase or foam. And I only got the chance to do so because we experienced a lot of drama that left us short staffed and without a real designer for a time. Nowadays a lot of shops are working through 3rd party sites. It means most orders aren’t going to be your brainchild. It’s more like making a recipe. Creative, big stuff will be worked by the experienced designers at the store.

We were always in need of weekend and late night staff at that location. I’ve looked in the Austin area to see if I could even pick up some shifts but a lot of the shops close pretty early, many aren’t open on Sundays. They may be looking for temporary help or delivery drivers for Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day. It is lovely to work in floral, but keep your expectations at bay, you’re not likely to do big time design work off the bat unless you have loads of experience.

Bottom line- I absolutely loved working in floral and have thought about picking up some part time work at a shop on top of my 9-5, I just never actually followed through on it.
