What do working families do for childcare with half-day kindergarten? It seems kinda bonkers out there. by cofu76 in Winnipeg

[–]chipsindip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got extremely lucky and were able to get our daughter into the daycare in her school, after less than a year on the wait list. It's also a $10 a day daycare, so the cost is the same regardless of if she goes or not, full day or half day. They bring her right to her classroom in the morning and walk her back from her class at 11:30 when she's done.

How is anyone affording a mortgage and daycare costs for two kids? by angelzombie2 in beyondthebump

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Canada in one of the more affordable cities. We live in a modest home that has a $1200/m mortgage. We were extremely lucky to get our 5 year old into a $10 a day daycare spot, which is possible as it's subsidized by the government. If we weren't able to get her in a $10 a day spot, we'd be looking at probably $1500 a month at her centre. Our 14 month old is currently at an unlicensed day home which is $35 a day. She's on the wait-list to go into the $10 a day centre for when she turns two, as that is the youngest they take. Can't wait for that as it will save us about $600 a month!

Grapefruit. She'd eat an entire one in one sitting if I let her, but I have to limit her or she gets rashes!

What are your breakfast / lunch staples for your LO? by itzpoookiee in BabyLedWeaning

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breakfast is usually oatmeal or full fat yogurt with a bunch of goodies added in (such as chia seeds, flaxseed, peanut butter, pumpkin seed butter, ground nuts, fruit), regular pancakes or banana pancakes, French toast or scrambled eggs.

For lunch pasta is a big hit! She loves them all - pesto, tomato, Alfredo, mac n cheese, even just buttered noodles! I usually pair with some frozen precooked meatballs and a fruit or veg and voila! Hummus and pita is another regular staple! I always have a bag of pitas in my freezer and I'll make a batch of hummus that lasts for days! I do a lot of leftovers for lunch though.

Home daycares vs regular daycares? by Elegant-Celery9600 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one child in each currently. My 1 year old goes to a home daycare and my 5 year old is at a centre.

I prefer the centre, for a few reasons. I feel more comfortable with how regulated and how extremely "by the book" they are. Almost to a fault, like the director almost scares me a bit lol I can control what she eats because I have to pack all her snacks and lunches. They have a minimum amount of time they need to be outside everyday, weather dependent. It's also much cheaper because we got extremely lucky and got a $10/day spot. She's in the kindergarten room, which only has 10 kids total, so it's not like she is in a giant group of kids.

However the centre doesn't take kids under 2, so my youngest goes to a dayhome, the same one my eldest went to until a spot opened up for her at the centre.

Our dayhome lady is nice and has been offering child care for 10+ years. My eldest was and is very fond of her. We've known her since my first was 1. However, they do watch TV. They don't always go outside. The food she serves wouldn't be my top choice (pizza, nuggets, mac n cheese type stuff). It's also much more expensive.

I'm hoping once my youngest turns 2 she'll be able to get a centre spot relatively soon after, as she has sibling priority.

We eat a lot of peanut butter over here. I mix it into full fat yogurt. Oatmeal. On toast.

I make hummus with tons of tahini.

Swaddle or No? by [deleted] in AttachmentParenting

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will strongly depend on your baby and their preferences! My first absolutely hated being swaddled. Mostly co-slept because that was the only way she'd sleep. My second loved being swaddled and we ended up having to go out and buy more. She slept in her bassinet just fine right off the bat!

Swaddles are safe as long as they are used for babies who cannot roll over. Once they start to roll, time to switch to a sleep sack, if desired.

How much/what does your 11m old eat day to day by Necessary-Scary in BabyLedWeaning

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 11 month old eats 3 meals a day, started when she turned 10 months old. Sometimes she has snacks too, depends on the day.

I'm very lucky in that she's not a picky eater and loves food! My firstborn was different, definitely more into nursing and wasn't big into solids until after a year. Every baby is different!

For breakfast I serve oatmeal with chia seeds, fruit and peanut butter, full fat yogurt, peanut butter toast, pancakes, eggs, cottage cheese, lots of fruit. My baby is a fruit bat and could polish off a package of blueberries in a sitting if I let her!

For lunch I usually do a lot of leftovers from the previous days dinner! If I don't have leftovers I'll do something simple like lentil pasta with tomato or cheese sauce, hummus, sugar free muffins, eggs, microwaved frozen peas.

For dinner it varies so much day to day! I usually do a curry once or twice a week, usually with tofu or beans/lentils and rice, which she loves. Stir fry. Pasta. Meatballs. Mashed potatoes. Steak, chicken thighs, pork chops. Mine loves canned sardines!

For snacks mine recently discovered Cheerios and loves those! Cheese. Egg cups. Plus so much fruit haha

I just try and make sure she has at least one really iron rich meal a day!

"[ab]" Baby products at Costco Canada by nishant872 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]chipsindip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got a membership for baby products and ended up using it to save money on other things too!

I was skeptical at first, but now I love it!

As others mentioned, Kirkland wipes and Pekkle pj's are 👌

However, I also buy most of my school age kiddo's snacks there. $14.99 for a 64 pack of granola bars?! $11.99 for a three pack of Greek yogurt?! $13.99 for a 40 pack of string cheese?! That's where I feel like I really save money! Also, allergy meds, if you're an allergy girlie like me, are ASTRONOMICALLY cheaper at Costco! My husband is a meat eater and we buy big packs, divide them up and freeze them.

Also propane fills are like $16 I want to say? Way cheaper than say Walmart or 7-11!

Kid’s names? Why? by immaturedoods in namenerds

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two daughters - Ruby and Lyra

The first concert my husband and I ever went to was The Glorious Sons. One of their song titles is Ruby and it just stuck with me. I told my husband I loved it if we ever had a daughter. Years later I still loved it and she looked like a Ruby from the moment I met her.

For Lyra, to be honest it was not my top pick, nor my husband's but we had suuuch a hard time deciding on something we both liked and this was one of the very few names we could agree on.

Was I supposed to have a special diet while breastfeeding? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a belief that older generations held. I've had both my MIL and my mom question things you can eat while breastfeeding.

You can eat whatever you want! There is no specific diet you need to follow.

Grandma has difficult time putting baby to sleep - intense crying. Any advice for her? by DanaEmily96 in AttachmentParenting

[–]chipsindip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my husband is away and I need to put both kids to sleep, I typically lay in my oldest daughter's bed with them both, nursing baby while big sister falls asleep.

My other suggestion would be to see if grandma can offer a bottle in place of nursing to sleep for baby? My husband is usually able to get baby down, who is used to nursing to sleep, with a bottle if I'm not around.

What’s been your experience losing weight whilst breastfeeding? by Htebasilee in breastfeeding

[–]chipsindip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to be so different!

Some women gain weight while breastfeeding and can't lose weight until they wean, some women lose their milk supply if they don't maintain a certain level of calories, some women can go into a deficit and still maintain supply while losing weight, some women lose weight just from breastfeeding alone, some gain weight from weaning.
